Glad to see I wasn't the only one thinking of Ronnie James.

Some article claimed the droid’s name is pronounced like “deo” and I became very angry upon reading that

of course it's "dio", I mean in the song they say "life's a never-ending wheel", open and shut

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 30 December 2019 15:23 (six years ago)

When Rey said something about D-0 having been mistreated by its former owner did anyone momentarily fear this was a dig at G Lucas R Johnson?

nashwan, Monday, 30 December 2019 15:37 (six years ago)

Who even knows. Possibly. At any rate, capitulations made to the detractors of TLJ were acts of creative cowardice afaic, and it bodes ill when you throw noisy internet douchenozzles any kind of a bone that lets them think they have power to reshape IP according to their own regressive whims.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 30 December 2019 15:45 (six years ago)

The friend with whom I saw TROS voiced the first (extremely mild) offline negative comments I've heard about TLJ (which I basically agree with, namely: a jokiness which seems to refer more to our universe than to the universe inhabited by the onscreen characters).

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 30 December 2019 15:50 (six years ago)

Also, very disappointed rn: ctrl+f itt for 'lens flare' nets zero results, shame on y'all for failing to properly recognize the multiple instances of that deeply-beloved directorial flourish.

I don't know if they mean e.g. the steam iron joke but that's in my 'not Star Wars but I like it' pile as opposed to the slightly bigger 'very Star Wars but don't like it' pile

so are you scheduling time in for this next year or

hot nuts (small) (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 30 December 2019 16:33 (six years ago)

Saw this yesterday, and I'm a big sucker but it did what I wanted it to do (texturally feel like Star Wars and uh trigger incongruous weepiness due to watching the original movies so many damn times in my childhood).

I guess you all thought young CGI Luke/Leia was bad, but that scene definitely hit me with some unexpected emotion. More so than any of the other Carrie Fisher stuff, just because it's always poignant juxtaposing real age vs youth, and I didn't expect them to lift their visors (it helped that it was so quick too).

Obviously there was a lot of dumb stuff too, but I'm not really interested in nitpicking a Star Wars movie to death. Sure, it could have been better to do something completely new rather than a souped-up RotJ, but for what it is I really enjoyed it.

-I did think it would be funny if Rey and Kylo kept sacrificing themselves/reviving the other back and forth for the rest of the movie

-the entrance to Palpatine's lair -- was that a gigantic hovering monolith that they walked under? If so, I'm into it.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 December 2019 16:36 (six years ago)

There was a gigantic shitstorm at Rian Johnson in 2017, were you living under or rock or something morris? How on earth can anyone be surprised at Star Wars fandom being cleaved in two, like it's been for two years now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Frederik B, Monday, 30 December 2019 16:38 (six years ago)

I guess you all thought young CGI Luke/Leia was bad

Consensus itt (which I agree with) seems to be 'young CGI Luke = almost uncannily good, young CGI Leia = we ran out of time so here is a Final Fantasy character who vaguely resembles a young Carrie Fisher if you squint just right'

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 30 December 2019 16:38 (six years ago)

It was like 1 second of screen time though, so I thought it was effective enough

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 30 December 2019 16:40 (six years ago)

And people 'chose sides' because the abuse at Kelly Marie Tran was organized by white supremacists. So we kinda didn't want to be on that side...

Frederik B, Monday, 30 December 2019 16:41 (six years ago)

I'd be interested to see a rundown of what everyone thought was the dumbest moment from each of the SW movies. I think mine this time around is when the dagger perfectly aligned with the Death Star rubble. That's like something a relatively precocious ten-year-old would write into an adventure story without realizing that it doesn't actually make sense.

-kinda liked how the snake first looked like a Rancor when it appeared, and then turned out to be a non-recycled element. I was really hoping that they wouldn't find anything important down there and that it would just be a detour for its own sake.

-obv Poe & Finn should have ended up together, but barring that, I did like that he didn't get the girl at the end. It's a good lesson, saving the galaxy should be enough, it doesn't mean that you get to go home and fuck.

I'd be interested to see a rundown of what everyone thought was the dumbest moment from each of the SW movies.

1: Binks pulling his mouth wide and rolling his tongue at Qui-Gon - sums up the whole film p much
2: It's Yoda saying "around the survivors a perimeter create"
3: Having recently rewatched it's tempting to nominate the bit where Obi-Wan and Anakin are in an elevator alone, it suddenly stops and they both ask each other if they pressed the stop button. Or Grievous commentating (to no-one) on his escape. Or yeah Padme dying of a 'broken heart'. Yet somehow this is still better than the first two.
4: The sabre fight between Vader and Obi-Wan always looked very clunky
5: No one moment springs to mind but I've never liked the rapid pace and editing of the first ten minutes
6: "Jedi Rocks" or, from the original, the shitness of Boba Fett in combat

nashwan, Monday, 30 December 2019 17:33 (six years ago)

Having just watched the first half hour of TPM the other day, the fact that there are at least three separate instances within that half hour of a character making that [rapidly shakes head and/or flaps jowls like Roger Rabbit saying 'P-B-B-B-B-LEASE!'] sound made me want to die a lil.

ep5 dumbest moment has to be the abominable snowman

Just imagine, there was supposed to be a whole pack of abominable snowmen running rampant through the rebel base!

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 30 December 2019 19:48 (six years ago)

i watched episode two last night and anakin in his courting of padme tells her that she is "smooth"

adam, Monday, 30 December 2019 19:50 (six years ago)

The 'brushing dust off the shoulder' gag was almost certainly the dumbest part of TLJ for me but it could've totally conveyed the same sentiment and actually landed as a mildly humorous moment if Luke had done kind of a casual double take at the dust on his shoulder before absently brushing it away in an 'oh, bother' fashion rather than staring defiantly into the camera as if he was just hoping someone would splice him into a Supa Hot Fire video.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 30 December 2019 19:58 (six years ago)

There's obviously a lot bad about Ep II, but I feel we're sleeping on Obi-Wan dropping in on his informant, the short-order cook at the space diner.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 30 December 2019 20:40 (six years ago)

Sir, I will not sit idly by while you besmirch the good name of Dexter Jettster. It is a very, very good name befitting a fine and beloved character. I demand satisfaction.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 30 December 2019 20:46 (six years ago)

the dumbest bit of every SW film 1-9 (except 4) is that we never discover that yoda's first name is minch

mark s, Monday, 30 December 2019 20:56 (six years ago)

a clone wars arc (one episode of which is the only thing walter murch has directed since return to oz) featured a brutal republic general of dexter jettster's species who walked with two hands clasped officiously behind his back and the other two thrust squarely away from the body in the manner g.w. bush sometimes used to affect. v good use of dexter jettster.

difficult listening hour, Monday, 30 December 2019 21:45 (six years ago)

the worst part of clones is the droid factory, where it is clear that none of the characters can have any control at all over whether or not they survive the action scene, unless this is the best part.
