Call me old fashioned, but there's nothing I relish like a hot tomata'!
(This has been the 'star wars 9 grim resignation' thread, only on ILX.)

Ok so... it's Abrams. But...based on some of the press I was pleasantly surprised.
I mean...I cannot stan for this the way I did TLJ. It has a solid first half but gets really messy in the second. He stuffs too much in there and some of it doesn't land.
But...it hit enough right notes for me that I enjoyed it. Definitely a dumber SW movie than the one before but hey the OG trilogy was often p dumb too.
I did like some of the new mythos

I thought it was dire. Would rank it with Episodes I to III
― groovypanda, Friday, 20 December 2019 18:38 (six years ago)
Reading this recap by the NY Times of how their film critics rated each of the Star Wars episodes from 1-9, I was bowled over to read how much A.O. Scott loved "Revenge of the Sith":
"...by far the best film in the more recent trilogy, and also the best of the four episodes Mr. Lucas has directed."
"The sheer beauty, energy and visual coherence of 'Revenge of the Sith' is nothing short of breathtaking.."
And this after he panned "Attack of the Clones"!
― o. nate, Saturday, 21 December 2019 01:39 (six years ago)
As noted somewhere upthread, I've only seen the prequels once in the theater, but my perception at the time was that each improved slightly upon the one before. I am somewhat curious to see how they'd fare a second time around.

that's my recollection too but I also saw them out of order; I skipped Attack of the Clones completely and though Sith was a step up from Phantom Menace. I saw Clones several years later and liked about half of it and found the other half dreadfully boring. But not as cringe inducing as Phantom.
― akm, Saturday, 21 December 2019 02:28 (six years ago)
my memory is that the most cringe-inducing bits got worse in 2 and then 3 but on average the films improved

I actually like RotS. But can't ride for the two prior

It's better if you imagine both Anakin and Padme were being puppeteered by Palpatine and that's why they seemed like zombies

oh thank god disney have seen sense because the main issues with this film were definitely that a) it was not long enough and b) there should have been even more callbacks to the previous movies

Monaghan then described a scene that he was a part of that didn't make the theatrical cut.“Another thing that we will hopefully see at some point in the future," he said, "is that in the final battle, Connix [played by Billie Lourd] injures her leg. Obviously, myself, Rose and Connix are exiting the battle, and Rose has a weapon. While Rose is busy doing stuff, I grab Connix’s arm and put it over my shoulder to make sure that all of us come back as unscathed as possible.”

Monaghan, like several other actors, was in the film because he'd worked with Abrams before, full stop.
― Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Monday, 6 January 2020 16:14 (six years ago)
This film needed to be shorter, not longer. Or, the script needed to be simpler. But when there is no fucking point to any of it, it's hard to know what to leave out.

Billie Lourd was robbed tbh

As recently discovered in the Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, Monaghan played historian Beaumont Kin, who was on track to become one the youngest professors at the Lerct Historical Institute before the First Order destroyed the Hosnian system.
phew, glad we cleared that up
