The journalistic convention being followed here is that, no matter what, the president must be regarded as as a functioning, capable human being. The Trump they are referring to there not the real Trump, but America's imaginary friend.

If they feel provoked and put on the defensive, they dig in their heels even further so that the opposition does not get the satisfaction. That's all they care about.
