oh yeah that had budding franchise written all over it, see also Alita xp

― Simon H., Wednesday, December 11, 2019 9:32 AM (eight minutes ago)

Alita did $400m worldwide and will get a sequel if I pray hard enough

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:40 (six years ago)

Did Hobbit TV get axed too?

Nope, thriving. New casting news the other day, J. A. Bayona's arrived in Auckland, second season confirmed. Trust me, having a Tolkien podcast means you know these things.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:43 (six years ago)

Cameron doesn't get involved in a project these days without securing half a dozen sequels from the outset. He's planning to alternate the upcoming Avatar installments with Titanic follow-ups iirc.

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:44 (six years ago)

we should do a poll of never-completed would-be blockbuster film franchises a la Golden Compass, Narnia, Maze Runner etc

― Simon H., Wednesday, December 11, 2019 10:27 AM (twenty-five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

the golden compass got rebooted as an hbo series

gbx, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:54 (six years ago)

was thinking the other day that almost everything i dislike about the last jedi is a result of the corner kasdan/abrams wrote things into for force awakens

― american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, December 11, 2019 9:57 AM (fifty-five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

for example: maz kanata, who is nearly written out of the last jedi but we still had to see her in hologram form. really terrible character

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:54 (six years ago)

Hm, reminds me that I haven't seen a mention of her at all for the new one.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:03 (six years ago)

She kills a Jimmy Hoffaesque Jawa

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:04 (six years ago)

ok rise of skywalker has one thing going for it xp

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:05 (six years ago)

the golden compass got rebooted as an hbo series

I am aware. diff cast/crew years later doesn't count imo!

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:05 (six years ago)

Narnia failed to complete two separate times!

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:08 (six years ago)

I have to give them credit for plugging forward instead of starting over each time.

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:19 (six years ago)

I liked Maz but some of that character's role could have been given to others

Narnia failed to complete two separate times!

and did complete two other times tbf

insecurity bear (sic), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:12 (six years ago)

I remember watching the BBC Narnia production in late elementary school but can't remember how well it landed

a u.s. government department (mh), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:22 (six years ago)

I loved it at the time

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:26 (six years ago)

They tried to do Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising, but only made one film, which I think was a complete flop? Probably for the best that it flopped, I can't imagine Hollywood ever capturing the tone of the books, which is very different from the "next Harry Potter" I presume they were aiming for.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:45 (six years ago)

I liked Maz too, her design reminded of Raz from Psychonauts, i.e. the best video game ever.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:48 (six years ago)

Hmm, Raz, Maz, I hadn't realised the resemblance of their names before... Maybe the similar design was intentional?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:50 (six years ago)

rooting for gleeson to be the secret backstabby hero in this.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:55 (six years ago)

Wait, all the way to the Last Battle?

(I agree with the view that there's an edge of "armed goon just out of sight" about some of the cast quotes)

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:59 (six years ago)

I predict Maz shows up with Lando and it's implied they're doing it.

nashwan, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 21:53 (six years ago)

i predict maz shows up with lando and it's graphically depicted that they're doing it.

re: Maze Runner: you might be thinking of the Divergent series? that one def fizzled after 2 movies of the 3 (?) books

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 12 December 2019 00:23 (six years ago)

The third movie did come out but only part 1 of 2

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Thursday, 12 December 2019 00:28 (six years ago)

doing some rewatching in the background here, and I’m once again wondering how accurately the subtitles reflect what was actually said when they translate non-Basic-speaking characters

In ROTJ, they *claim* Jabba says Han is now “bantha fodder” when he clearly says “bantha poodoo” which seems more like “bantha shit”

justice for non-basic speakers!

mh, Thursday, 12 December 2019 01:21 (six years ago)

I reread the novelisations more than I saw the films and "bantha fodder" rings familiar tbh

insecurity bear (sic), Thursday, 12 December 2019 02:07 (six years ago)

Bantha is about as much a warrior as Will Ferrell

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Thursday, 12 December 2019 02:09 (six years ago)

banthas seem like they should be herbivores, but who knows?

mh, Thursday, 12 December 2019 02:10 (six years ago)

I encoded the SW films for my home server a few years ago and accidentally left off subtitles. They’re very understandable without, in that the intonation and a few soundalike words pop up in dialogue. Not a master class in alien language writing, but at some point someone made the wise decision that reading subtitles wasn’t necessary to get the plot.

mh, Thursday, 12 December 2019 02:13 (six years ago)

But in Phantom Menace Jar-Jar steps in what is clearly supposed to be crap and calls it "poodoo!"

(How he knows Huttese is an open question)

I don't get wet because I am tall and thin and I am afraid of people (Eliza D.), Thursday, 12 December 2019 02:48 (six years ago)

Could just be that it is basic slang and they’re fucking with us!

I am wondering, if there is an Emperor, ghost or otherwise, if he’s gonna pull out “my young apprentice(s)” in this new one

mh, Thursday, 12 December 2019 03:00 (six years ago)

There’s a teaser clip that is SPOILERY out there now that you may want to avoid

let me just say,

SITH TEMPLE

mh, Thursday, 12 December 2019 22:13 (six years ago)

is Kylo going to destroy the Sith texts with Darth Sidious's ghost?

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Thursday, 12 December 2019 22:15 (six years ago)

Baby Yoda is running it all from the sith temple

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 12 December 2019 22:41 (six years ago)

the Force is just karate

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Thursday, 12 December 2019 22:48 (six years ago)

pretty sure that wasn’t the Emperor blowing up at the end of ROTJ. that was him going through a portal to SITH TEMPLE

mh, Friday, 13 December 2019 00:28 (six years ago)

they should have palpy winning at the end and making rey his underling after giving kylo ren the old force lightning after he turns goody

#FBPIRA (jim in vancouver), Friday, 13 December 2019 00:29 (six years ago)

they won't obv

#FBPIRA (jim in vancouver), Friday, 13 December 2019 00:29 (six years ago)

I would cackle with glee

mh, Friday, 13 December 2019 00:34 (six years ago)

he gives Rey the title of Darth Skywalker to really rub it in

mh, Friday, 13 December 2019 00:34 (six years ago)

Darth Icky

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 December 2019 00:40 (six years ago)

Rian Johnson healthily seems to take this attitude even to rabid Star Wars fans, insisting that the hundreds of misspelled Last Jedi abuse replies on every tweet he makes about baseball games are a tiny proportion of the actual feedback he gets overall.

lol

Met @JRichardKelly in film school. He came in with his super 8 film & propped an anamorphic lens in front of the projector. HE SHOT HIS SUPER 8 FILMS ANAMORPHIC. I was like “son of a bitch!” Been friends ever since. He’s a great filmmaker who’s always played by his own rules. https://t.co/hgAYySmvoX

Fuck you, you ruined Star Wars

They call him sauce... cos he gives everyone gastritis

100 Percent That Grinch (Neanderthal), Saturday, 14 December 2019 00:16 (six years ago)

I found it hilarious how insanely petty it was, like what a fascinating little fact about the inventiveness of a director whose first feature showed a promising creative voice, offered up by someone who had a chance to marvel at that inventiveness even earlier. And what it says about Johnson that he takes the opportunity to share that admiration in a concise anecdote rather than just RT a plug and move on... just met by a mentality that can't comprehend generosity or creativity as concepts. Whose adoration (?) of Star Wars has not managed to impart any notions of the value of kindness and tolerance from the text, or of interest in or appreciation for clever solutions to filmmaking challenges, that combine vision with hands-on craft. Remembered my post from the other day, and thought how aptly this illustrated the ineffectual nature of those gnat-bite responses.

Then I clicked through on Mr Sauce's account after posting and regretted it tbh.

insecurity bear (sic), Saturday, 14 December 2019 00:23 (six years ago)

lol fair nuff

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 14 December 2019 00:29 (six years ago)

If Star Wars was real, Sauce would be Hux's mixologist
