was thinking the other day that almost everything i dislike about the last jedi is a result of the corner kasdan/abrams wrote things into for force awakens

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 16:57 (six years ago)

still glad snoke is dead

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 16:58 (six years ago)

I guess I'm gonna have to rewatch these things before seeing the new ones. I can maybe remember a half dozen elements from each that I can distinguish as belonging to that specific movie but otherwise both sequels kinda blur into one another in my mind. I have no recollection of how the last one ended aside from that lightsaber duel. I mean, I just sat here for a minute trying to remember which one Mads was in before realizing it was neither. Guess I also gotta turn in my fan club badge now, huh.

this all reinforces my longstanding sense that the RJ trilogy isn't really going to happen

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:16 (six years ago)

Crazy idea, I know, but maybe they could try a few solo outings (not of the Han variety, natch) set in the SW universe to see if one in particular resonated with the public before going all-in on an entire trilogy.

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:20 (six years ago)

Why would you make a Rian Johnson trilogy, when you have Benioff and Wise ready to recreate that Game of Thrones magic?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:21 (six years ago)

I honestly don't know if that is still on...

Frederik B, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:22 (six years ago)

That was 86d like, 3 months ago shortly after (and maybe a direct result of) the GOT dudes admitting they kind of conned their way into the GOT gig

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:23 (six years ago)

Like I don't know how many times the studios need to burn their dicks off with the 'expansive years-long palette of films whose plots and characters are thoroughly unknown and untested' plan before they start to learn that they're putting the cart before the horse.

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:23 (six years ago)

we should do a poll of never-completed would-be blockbuster film franchises a la Golden Compass, Narnia, Maze Runner etc

Receive Your Simulated Fluids Before The End of The Year! (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:28 (six years ago)

That would be a good poll also add in that infernal machines movie thing that happened this year (?)

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:31 (six years ago)

xxpost Didn't I see somewhere that somebody was picking up the Narnia mantle where it was left off? And cranking out another movie or two to a confused public before following Disney's lead and abandoning it all over again?

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:32 (six years ago)

oh yeah that had budding franchise written all over it, see also Alita xp

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:32 (six years ago)

Did Hobbit TV get axed too?

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:33 (six years ago)

no, the Hobbit TV series went straight to theaters, cut as three "movies"

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:34 (six years ago)

the maze runner is technically complete

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:34 (six years ago)

they didn't include the prequel books but whom gives a shit

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:34 (six years ago)

ah I thought some of it got shunted off to a TV series or something

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:36 (six years ago)

(research montage) It does appear that Netflix is indeed continuing the Narnia adaptations, although whether for theaters or TV (or both) is unclear.

Alita did $400m worldwide and will get a sequel if I pray hard enough

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:40 (six years ago)

Did Hobbit TV get axed too?

Nope, thriving. New casting news the other day, J. A. Bayona's arrived in Auckland, second season confirmed. Trust me, having a Tolkien podcast means you know these things.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:43 (six years ago)

Cameron doesn't get involved in a project these days without securing half a dozen sequels from the outset. He's planning to alternate the upcoming Avatar installments with Titanic follow-ups iirc.

for example: maz kanata, who is nearly written out of the last jedi but we still had to see her in hologram form. really terrible character

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 17:54 (six years ago)

Hm, reminds me that I haven't seen a mention of her at all for the new one.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:03 (six years ago)

She kills a Jimmy Hoffaesque Jawa

I am aware. diff cast/crew years later doesn't count imo!

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:05 (six years ago)

Narnia failed to complete two separate times!

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:08 (six years ago)

I have to give them credit for plugging forward instead of starting over each time.

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 18:19 (six years ago)

I liked Maz but some of that character's role could have been given to others

Narnia failed to complete two separate times!

and did complete two other times tbf

insecurity bear (sic), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:12 (six years ago)

I remember watching the BBC Narnia production in late elementary school but can't remember how well it landed

a u.s. government department (mh), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:22 (six years ago)

I loved it at the time

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:26 (six years ago)

They tried to do Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising, but only made one film, which I think was a complete flop? Probably for the best that it flopped, I can't imagine Hollywood ever capturing the tone of the books, which is very different from the "next Harry Potter" I presume they were aiming for.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:45 (six years ago)

I liked Maz too, her design reminded of Raz from Psychonauts, i.e. the best video game ever.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:48 (six years ago)

Hmm, Raz, Maz, I hadn't realised the resemblance of their names before... Maybe the similar design was intentional?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:50 (six years ago)

rooting for gleeson to be the secret backstabby hero in this.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:55 (six years ago)

Wait, all the way to the Last Battle?

(I agree with the view that there's an edge of "armed goon just out of sight" about some of the cast quotes)

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 19:59 (six years ago)

I predict Maz shows up with Lando and it's implied they're doing it.

nashwan, Wednesday, 11 December 2019 21:53 (six years ago)

i predict maz shows up with lando and it's graphically depicted that they're doing it.

re: Maze Runner: you might be thinking of the Divergent series? that one def fizzled after 2 movies of the 3 (?) books

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 12 December 2019 00:23 (six years ago)

The third movie did come out but only part 1 of 2

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Thursday, 12 December 2019 00:28 (six years ago)

doing some rewatching in the background here, and I’m once again wondering how accurately the subtitles reflect what was actually said when they translate non-Basic-speaking characters

In ROTJ, they *claim* Jabba says Han is now “bantha fodder” when he clearly says “bantha poodoo” which seems more like “bantha shit”

justice for non-basic speakers!

mh, Thursday, 12 December 2019 01:21 (six years ago)

I reread the novelisations more than I saw the films and "bantha fodder" rings familiar tbh

insecurity bear (sic), Thursday, 12 December 2019 02:07 (six years ago)

Bantha is about as much a warrior as Will Ferrell
