how about a grimly content free conservative troll who couches all his posts in fluffy ambiguity and classic lit references to try and make himself sound cleverer than he is. and repeat for a decade.

i know this is going to seem awful at first but hear me out:

optional notifications for zing. possible options:

- hourly top 5 threads by number of new posts ("or some permutation of that" applies to all of these basically)
- daily top 5 new threads created within the last 24 hours
- when a bookmark that hasn't been posted on in at least a hour gets a new post (conditional there to prevent people's phones from buzzing their pants off when a thread gets a ton of posts all day)

others probably better ideas than that, but those were the first few that came to mind.

the one notification feature i’ve always wanted is the ability to @ somebody. sometimes a thread really needs someone.

@ing someone could serve that function (somehow). like maybe an @ creates a new link on a special bookmark page, linking through to the post where you were @ed.

I can never remember what a good YouTube URL looks like. There are question marks and equals signs that I can never get straight. It's all fine on desktop since I can load the actual YouTube page and copy the URL. It's tougher on mobile.

Just hit the “share” arrow, copy, and you get a nice clean link like this. Maybe you’re on Android and it’s messier?

But if you do that the youtube doesn't embed, it just appears as a link.

it wouldn't be difficult to modify your favourite stylesheet to be dark and submit that as an alternative. programmatically creating something that'll work for all the current stylesheets would be a challenge.

the thing with youtube is if the URL is shortened like Tombot's above, it won't embed. shortened = "youtu.be" instead of "www.youtube.com".

sometimes if you post from mobile, it does that, but you can always make the link embed by typing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

and then inserting the latter part of the link right after the equals sign (no space).

equals

I think they coded the embed feature before Youtube started automatically shortening its own URLs

For example if you’re subbed to a thread but there’s a lot of dumb sh1t being posted and you want to wait it out for a week or so

So many "I missed the nominations thread," "I missed the voting thread" and "I missed the rollout" posts make me wish for a Tag function, but I could see that being badly abused. Maybe Tagging plus an opt-out.

People who post those things are dilettantes who aren’t online enough and need not be catered to

Yeah I mean I can find when ppl are mentioning me in threads I’m not in by searching posts for my un and sort by newest first, we already have @ing

I have to do an * to include both, because sometimes I get mentioned by my old un, but there are a bunch of posters who would have to do multiple searches, and some of them have a variety of long-ass names, so they just get referred to by an acronym, or their first name, or a googleproofed version of a first name ...
