So, the live action remake of The Lion King is an animated film?

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:35 (six years ago)

Not sure about Bale and Pryce, but otherwise we're looking at many Oscar nominees next month.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:38 (six years ago)

And maybe winners ... I had to go back and check and, indeed, nearly everything that won a Golden Globe last year went on to win the Oscar -- Green Book, Cuaron, Malek, Coleman, Ali, King, Green Book's screenplay, "Shallow" for song, Spider-Verse for animated, Roma for foreign film. The only single miss was First Man for original score.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:45 (six years ago)

is it wrong to expect a Marriage Story sweep

Simon H., Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:50 (six years ago)

and ugh Supporting Actor filled with slumming stars

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:54 (six years ago)

I hadn't even noticed that! so boring and shitty. Pacino especially really doesn't need to be in the mix

Simon H., Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:56 (six years ago)

He would've been replaced by the similarly craggy Dafoe, probably.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:59 (six years ago)

There's no way that category doesn't have a median age of 67 this year.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:59 (six years ago)

I can see Dafoe making it to Oscar nod, just to seal his comeback.

er, nom

Don't nom my nod.

It’s not live action and contains only animated performances so yes

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 16:57 (six years ago)

insecurity bear (sic), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 18:15 (six years ago)

Simon H., Tuesday, 10 December 2019 18:19 (six years ago)

I already had no interest in this movie, now I'm Bret Easton Ellis ovah heah

Consensus seems to be "decent movie that would have been intolerable if almost anyone else directed it"

Simon H., Tuesday, 10 December 2019 20:47 (six years ago)

Tom Hanks is phenomenal in it, all the Gondry-esque touches are cute/cool (but would have been better with Gondry), but it's mostly pretty meh

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 20:55 (six years ago)

someone observed that the Esquire offices in the late '90s are seen as staffed significantly by women and people of color...

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 21:04 (six years ago)

xp to whiney: because it's well edited (if painfully scored)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 21:13 (six years ago)

(and it is very much detritus)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 21:13 (six years ago)

Why would I want to watch a bunch of movie clips edited together for 14 minutes?

"Wow, what if someone made the montage that opens the Oscars but it had Midsommar in it!"

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 21:28 (six years ago)

I love film, but I don't think I understand film fans sometimes

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 21:30 (six years ago)

Yes, the Twitter guy editing Star Wars scenes is just like Godard's Histoire(s) du cinéma

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 21:37 (six years ago)

sometimes i think you mostly like to argue

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 22:07 (six years ago)

i'm with whiney here though, that edit is obnoxious

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 22:08 (six years ago)

There is entirely too much Midsommer in there.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 22:34 (six years ago)

there's a top 25 list once you get past the intro, which i skipped entirely. or possibly don't watch it?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 22:40 (six years ago)

or possibly don't watch it?

capitulation!

insecurity bear (sic), Tuesday, 10 December 2019 23:08 (six years ago)

#1 no surprise

Souvenir at #6 is fine but still too low

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 01:36 (six years ago)

Still a bit perplexed by how well High Life (FC's #7) is doing. Belated recognition of the director? It's probably in the poorer half of Denis's output, and among 2019's "lost in space" art films I liked Aniara more.

TIFF's Canadian top 10:

And The Birds Rained Down by Louise Archambault, Quebec
Anne At 13,000 Ft by Kazik Radwanski, Ontario
Antigone by Sophie Deraspe, Quebec
Black Conflux by Nicole Dorsey, Newfoundland/Quebec
The Body Remembers When The World Broke Open by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn, British Columbia
Matthias & Maxime by Xavier Dolan, Quebec
Murmur by Heather Young, Nova Scotia
One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk by Zacharias Kunuk, Nunavut
The Twentieth Century by Matthew Rankin, Quebec
White Lie by Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis, Ontario

I hear great things about a couple of these but I wouldn't mind if they took a year off from Dolan worship

Simon H., Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:32 (six years ago)

well he is only director on that list that most of us down south have heard of

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2019 15:46 (six years ago)

The Body Remembers... is on Netflix, at least in Canada. I suspect Anne at 13,000 Ft will make some waves when it makes the rounds theatrically next year. (I haven't seen it but ppl I trust loved it, and it earns automatic points for its 75-minute runtime.)
