god the blurb on the bottom of that cover is almost as nauseating as anthony lane's own writing

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Friday, 6 December 2019 21:13 (six years ago)

I read Lane with pleasure until 2001 or two, after which he couldn't stop yawning in character.

lol at Oncle Boonmee vs Under The Skin

morbs I don't remember if you stopped at or before episode 8?

insecurity bear (sic), Friday, 6 December 2019 21:28 (six years ago)

I like a lot of the Lane in that book, sometimes skim him in the magazine now hoping for a bon mot or two but

insecurity bear (sic), Friday, 6 December 2019 21:30 (six years ago)

Metacritic's aggregate has an odd point system:

Why do you even watch movies anymore?

Let me try a new answer: most of the films I was responding to are made by overrated auteurist darlings.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 December 2019 00:34 (six years ago)

That describes most of the films we like too.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:05 (six years ago)

I liked Loznitsa's My Joy and Donbass and am curious about State Funeral, which was on Hoberman's and Quandt's lists

Dan S, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:32 (six years ago)

also re: Hoberman’s list, I think Christian Marclay’s 48 War Movies is really interesting, but if I’m going to vote for a video art installation it’s going to be Lisa Reihana’s In Pursuit of Venus (Infected) or JR’s The Chronicles of San Francisco

Dan S, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:53 (six years ago)

I’m not going to vote for a video art installation

hearing him casually bash Spielberg while introducing Cutter's Way a couple months ago, I was reminded that I pretty much hate Hoberman's pretentious ass

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 December 2019 06:50 (six years ago)

the memory of melancholia > actually rewatching it

― johnny crunch, Friday, 6 December 2019 21:02 (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

rewatched last week and can confirm

or something, Saturday, 7 December 2019 09:30 (six years ago)

The direction and script are schematic, but Alfre Woodard is marvelous in Clemency, deserving the plaudits (as usual).

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 13:01 (six years ago)

that's true of most von trier films IME. Melancholia is probably my favorite of his.

akm, Saturday, 7 December 2019 16:10 (six years ago)

i'm aware this has been hashed out heavily in the relevant thread without me, but after three of his films (stopping at dogville), I've concluded i kinda fuckin' hate LVT and am okay not seeing any of his work ever again.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 7 December 2019 17:49 (six years ago)

It took me three more than that, but yeah.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Saturday, 7 December 2019 18:20 (six years ago)

If y'all want detrius, here's my list of the decade's 50 best films.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 18:56 (six years ago)

Margaret isn't coming up on nearly enough lists. Also, this is the first time I've seen Stranger by the Lake or Being 17 appear on any of these things (I agree).

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Saturday, 7 December 2019 19:07 (six years ago)

and no Moonlight on mine!

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 19:13 (six years ago)

...which has appeared on every list (it's okay, works splendidly as course material).

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 19:13 (six years ago)

Moonlight is only like my 5th or 6th fave queer movie of the decade, but I definitely think its more than OK.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Saturday, 7 December 2019 19:17 (six years ago)

so many good to great queer films this decade that I don't have patience with lists omitting the rest but keeping Moonlight.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 19:20 (six years ago)

Personal Shopper the film that had probably the most impact on me and not seeing it on that many lists. Leave No Trace prolly my no.2. I'd like to see more love for Dredd, too.

Life is a meaningless nightmare of suffering...save string (Chinaski), Saturday, 7 December 2019 19:33 (six years ago)

xp: Margaret and Stranger by the Lake have appeared on a few of these retrospective lists. Alfred's list is pretty unique in highlighting Poetry, Girlhood, Being 17, Love and Friendship, Love is Strange, In Jackson Heights, The Ornithologist, In The Family, The Other Side of Hope, Ava, BPM (Beats Per Minute), Inside Job, Of Gods and Men, Barbara, and The Ghost Writer.

Of Gods and Men should be appearing on most of these lists, IMO.

полезный инструмент (Sanpaku), Sunday, 8 December 2019 01:50 (six years ago)

In Jackson Heights (appears on a couple).

полезный инструмент (Sanpaku), Sunday, 8 December 2019 01:52 (six years ago)

n Jackson Heights is my favorite Wiseman film so far, but I still haven't seen Monrovia, Indiana

I would not have guessed that Of Gods and Men was as recent as 2010

I endorse its inclusion

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 8 December 2019 04:39 (six years ago)

might put Beauvois's The Guardians in a top 100 as well

along those lines, not finalizing this year's list til the Woody Allen film is released
