is "a ghost story" worth the time?
I'm trying to determine ten more 2019 films to see before end of the year that i've yet to watch and have landed on: ash is purest white, atlantics, the chambermaid, Ad Astra, For sama, Pain and Glory, Seahorse, Souvenir, Burning Cane and high life. anybody wanna weigh in on prioritization and/or naysaying?

― american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 21:46 (six years ago)
i did! it was good! not life changing but good. as with the rabbi's cat (which i also saw recently) it was SO true to the comic that I felt like i had kinda already seen it somehow.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 21:47 (six years ago)
really think Phantom Thread and The Souvenir are near-great films with overlapping aesthetics
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 22:22 (six years ago)
In Fabric would make a good double bill with Phantom Thread.

Anyone who watches Alita Battle Angel should be reported to a sex offender registry

watched my first Lav Diaz film, The Woman Who Left. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film from the Philippines before (I’ve been planning on watching Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa but haven’t gotten around to it yet).
I thought it was really great. Kanopy has two others - From What Is Before and Norte, The End of History - so I will get to see those too

― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:19 (six years ago)
i am pretty head over heels about boonmee and cemetery, and holy motors at no. 2 feels very right to me. i agree the von trier pick is safe but i also really love melancholia. also i haven't seen every film on the list lol
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:20 (six years ago)
I guess that will be the only list to include The Image Book
― flappy bird, Friday, 6 December 2019 18:24 (six years ago)
didnt mind Holy Motors, but its no Pola X
nah, i think anyone who's Godard-centric will list that or Film Socialisme (surely Brody had both?)

Why do you even watch movies anymore?
― temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:28 (six years ago)
because a Souvenir comes along every now and then?
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:28 (six years ago)
Have seen Melancholia pop up a lot on mainstream decade lists the last few weeks.
― temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:29 (six years ago)
also i concentrate on repertory, where most of the good stuff i haven't seen is
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:29 (six years ago)
i thought you liked the list of a dozen i posted on FB last week? A dozen is p good considering ive seen maybe 35-38 features this year.

a couple of serious "hell yeah"s from me for that list which suggests I might want to watch other things on it
― Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:42 (six years ago)
Brody for me is either dead on (rarely) or spectacularly off the mark, generally regarding some element of the film that didn't bother me at all.

the memory of melancholia > actually rewatching it
― johnny crunch, Friday, 6 December 2019 21:02 (six years ago)
god the blurb on the bottom of that cover is almost as nauseating as anthony lane's own writing
― Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Friday, 6 December 2019 21:13 (six years ago)
I read Lane with pleasure until 2001 or two, after which he couldn't stop yawning in character.

Let me try a new answer: most of the films I was responding to are made by overrated auteurist darlings.
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 December 2019 00:34 (six years ago)
That describes most of the films we like too.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:05 (six years ago)
I liked Loznitsa's My Joy and Donbass and am curious about State Funeral, which was on Hoberman's and Quandt's lists
― Dan S, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:32 (six years ago)
also re: Hoberman’s list, I think Christian Marclay’s 48 War Movies is really interesting, but if I’m going to vote for a video art installation it’s going to be Lisa Reihana’s In Pursuit of Venus (Infected) or JR’s The Chronicles of San Francisco
― Dan S, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:53 (six years ago)
I’m not going to vote for a video art installation
hearing him casually bash Spielberg while introducing Cutter's Way a couple months ago, I was reminded that I pretty much hate Hoberman's pretentious ass
