Everything was destined to be a comedown from them awarding Regina Hall last year.

Simon H., Wednesday, 4 December 2019 18:43 (six years ago)

They're not on a terribly exciting streak of best picture winners, after Roma, Lady Bird (good tho that movie is) and La La Land.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 18:49 (six years ago)

i can't imagine an "exciting" winner (other than The Souvenir or Image Book) that wouldn't sicken me

Lupita basically delivered an intelligent, first-rate, Jamie Lee Curtis-level scream-queen performance with a side order of raspy-voiced predator doppleganger

so she earned the award then

Lupita Renee Zellweger basically delivered an intelligent, first-rate, Jamie Lee Curtis-level scream-queen performance with a side order of raspy-voiced predator doppleganger

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 19:11 (six years ago)

Lupita Nyong’o wins the NYFCC’s Best Actress trophy for Us? Seriously? Eight parts wokester virtue-signalling, two parts serious regard for a noteworthy performance…trust me. Last Year’s Best Actress award to Support The Girls‘ Regina Hall comes to mind. The NYFCC used to be the NYFCC — now it’s an organizational ally of Indiewire‘s wokeness gesture crusade.

Legitimately happy this asshole is upset.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 19:13 (six years ago)

lupita was the only reason to see (and maybe actually good enough to justify a watch) Little Monsters

Alfred, did you end up seeing Waves or Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 20:42 (six years ago)

Waves tonight.

In the last few nights:

Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Uncut Gems

bits of Parasite (saw it once before).

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 20:43 (six years ago)

Er, I meant I'd seen those movies in the last few nights.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 20:44 (six years ago)

Out of curiosity and undiagnosed disorder, I aggregated a meta-list of the decade-end lists here and on that fimoculous link with 50 or more titles. You won't like this.

13 mentions: Mad Max: Fury Road
12: Boyhood, Inside Llewyn Davis, Moonlight, The Master
11: Get Out, The Social Network
10: Call Me by Your Name, Frances Ha, Her, Phantom Thread, The Act of Killing/The Look of Silence, The Tree of Life, The Wolf of Wall Street, Under the Skin
9: 12 Years a Slave, Burning, First Reformed, Holy Motors, Inception, Lady Bird, Roma, The Grand Budapest Hotel
8: A Separation, Carol, Inside Out, Melancholia, Parasite
7: Elle, Force Majeure, La La Land, O.J.: Made in America, Shoplifters, The Handmaiden, Toni Erdmann
6: A Ghost Story, Amour, Before Midnight, Certified Copy, Drive, Dunkirk, Hereditary, High Life, Leviathan, Manchester by the Sea, Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, Paddington 2, Phoenix, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Tangerine, The Florida Project, The Lobster, Whiplash, You Were Never Really Here
5: American Honey, Annihilation, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, Bridesmaids, Gone Girl, Green Room, Inherent Vice, Margaret, Only Lovers Left Alive, Spring Breakers, Stories We Tell, The Duke of Burgundy, The Favourite, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Upstream Color
4: 20th Century Women, Black Panther, Cameraperson, Dogtooth, Eighth Grade, Faces Places, If Beale Street Could Talk, It Follows, John Wick, Magic Mike XXL, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, No Home Movie, Personal Shopper, Silence, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Babadook, The Revenant, The Turin Horse, The Witch, What We Do in the Shadows, Zero Dark Thirty
3: Beasts of the Southern Wild, Birdman, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Cold War, Ex Machina, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Good Time, Gravity, Her Smell, Ida, Jackie, Logan, Minding the Gap, Moonrise Kingdom, Mother!, Nightcrawler, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Selma, Sing Street, Son of Saul, Sorry to Bother You, Spotlight, Stranger By The Lake, Swiss Army Man, Take Shelter, The Farewell, The Great Beauty, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, The Raid: Redemption, The Rider, The Souvenir, The Wind Rises, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Weekend, Your Name, Zama

Having perused all these, I'm pleased by how much the appraisal of Boyhood and The Revenant has fallen, and the growing appreciation of Under the Skin, Holy Motors, The Duke of Burgundy, and Take Shelter; disappointed by the lesser recognition of Zama, The Witch, Nocturama and Timbuktu, perplexed by the admiration of High Life and Annhilation, Swiss Army Man, and angry that film critics would mention Last Jedi and Inception in the vicinity of a canonical list. And I think I need to see Phoenix and The Immigrant.

полезный инструмент (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 20:46 (six years ago)

You do (re the The Immigrant). I'm lukewarm on Petzold generally.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 20:49 (six years ago)

is "a ghost story" worth the time?

I'm trying to determine ten more 2019 films to see before end of the year that i've yet to watch and have landed on: ash is purest white, atlantics, the chambermaid, Ad Astra, For sama, Pain and Glory, Seahorse, Souvenir, Burning Cane and high life. anybody wanna weigh in on prioritization and/or naysaying?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 21:18 (six years ago)

ulysses did you see Alita Battle Angel, you should watch that

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 21:39 (six years ago)

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

oh this is on my list

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 21:46 (six years ago)

i did! it was good! not life changing but good. as with the rabbi's cat (which i also saw recently) it was SO true to the comic that I felt like i had kinda already seen it somehow.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 21:47 (six years ago)

really think Phantom Thread and The Souvenir are near-great films with overlapping aesthetics
