yeah, I had to remind myself what that is, and hence why I don't care what he likes

I'm with him on Amazing Grace, Hail Satan and Once Upon a TimeBorder woulda been in my top 20 for last yearStill need to see Climax, pain and Glory and Souvenir
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 2 December 2019 05:48 (four years ago) link
both extended dance routines in Climax are great but you should switch the film off after the second one.

booksmart is very funny.
― akm, Monday, 2 December 2019 17:23 (four years ago) link
Eighth Grade is great btw
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 2 December 2019 18:17 (four years ago) link
they are both better than mid-90's which had some charms but was kind of forgettable.
― akm, Monday, 2 December 2019 19:10 (four years ago) link
anyone see Waves? the trailer makes it look like the cheesiest thing ever.
― akm, Monday, 2 December 2019 19:13 (four years ago) link
I thought Waves was awesome
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 December 2019 20:13 (four years ago) link
The music use in it is incredible
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 December 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link
The trailer does not do the first half of that movie justice
good to know!
― akm, Monday, 2 December 2019 20:57 (four years ago) link
Yeah, it’s really bold and stylish, the music use is like an expressionist fever dream, I kind of wish they would do the soundtrack as one 75 minute track or something. One of my faves of the year!
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:16 (four years ago) link
I find it really hard to bring myself to watch the whole Eighth Grade/Booksmart/Mid90s run of wealthy white millennial directors getting self-serious about their suburban upbringings.
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, November 30, 2019 1:00 AM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink
eighth grade is pretty obviously not a self-serious movie about bo burnham's suburban upbringing
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:18 (four years ago) link
you should watch it just for the dope anna meredith soundtrack tbh whiney
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:19 (four years ago) link
xps: Climax could have been better if the 15 minute sequence of 2 and 3 part improvs that painted every character in a negative light were dropped. After that, I saw the rest as a morality play where justice was dealt.
I've decided that inclusion of Upstream Color and Under the Skin is my litmus test for critical lists of the decade. I've returned to both regularly.
― Self Disabuse (Sanpaku), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:21 (four years ago) link
both of those movies would be on my list, though i'm like... physically incapable of returning to them. thankfully they both burned themselves into my mind on first contact
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:25 (four years ago) link
the first twenty minutes of upstream color is body horror even beyond my personal threshold and the drowning scene in under the skin is just... nope, can't do it again
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:26 (four years ago) link
Y'all should watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I'm aware! I'm saying don't miss out.
I have to decide between Waves and the Mr. Rogers thing tonight.

Kinda think i need to try Atlantics tonight.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 2 December 2019 21:48 (four years ago) link
Some of the people really laying into Waves probably need to take a step back from the A24 backlash pileon but ... I can absolutely see the validity of the criticisms about the first half in particular.
― temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:11 (four years ago) link
I'm always get some anxiety that ILX FILM GUY movies are are like The Souvenir and Gloria Bell where its like "a subtle, unhurried character study of a woman navigating life's valleys and occasional peaks"
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:19 (four years ago) link
And like exciting, cool, exploitationy art-house stuff like A24 is for herbs and noobs
you might prefer Diane as she dies at the end?
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link
(ILX FILM GUY spoiler)

i got fifteen minutes into mid90's and bailed, it was boring
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link
Anyway, I liked Waves
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link
And Gloria Bell is a remake, so we all prefer the Chilean original. Whine better, Whiney!
― Frederik B, Monday, 2 December 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link
is the remake worth a watch? i really liked the original but kinda assumed there was no point to the remake except to sell a proven commodity to an anglo audience.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:24 (four years ago) link
I don't.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 December 2019 22:26 (four years ago) link
I didn't find time to watch the remake, but it's probably good. My mom liked it.
― Frederik B, Monday, 2 December 2019 23:05 (four years ago) link
I liked the original, but in the context of American film it's cool we can still get a subtle, unhurried character study of a woman navigating life's valleys and occasional peaks -- with a little sex in it.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 December 2019 23:07 (four years ago) link
Sure, sure. I just really don't care about that context :)
Latin American cinema has been really great with those subtle studies of middle aged women, btw. Gloria, Las Herederas (which might still be on Netflix), and The Desert Bride.

Marriage Story swept the Gotham Awards, winning best feature, best actor, best screenplay, and the audience award. Akwafina won best actress, and Taylor Russell (Waves) won breakthrough performer. American Factory won best documentary.

With Bo Burnham and Awkwafina, our current path to a celebrated cinema career is lined with crypto-racist rap YouTubes. Really cannot wait for Riff Raff and Lil Dicky to be crowned the new Welles and Bergman

I mean, James Franco's big critical breakthrough was like 7 years ago now.

“ok boomer” season:
srsly, is this a trending Irishman slur? cuz its Big Four are all older than that. (Five if you count Thelma S.) Or are they talking about the audience?
