I find it really hard to bring myself to watch the whole Eighth Grade/Booksmart/Mid90s run of wealthy white millennial directors getting self-serious about their suburban upbringings.

Man spoke too soon, looks like 2/3 of them grew up rich kids and I'm not so sure about Bo.

both extended dance routines in Climax are great but you should switch the film off after the second one.

booksmart is very funny.

Eighth Grade is great btw

they are both better than mid-90's which had some charms but was kind of forgettable.

Yeah, it’s really bold and stylish, the music use is like an expressionist fever dream, I kind of wish they would do the soundtrack as one 75 minute track or something. One of my faves of the year!

Climax could have been better if the 15 minute sequence of 2 and 3 part improvs that painted every character in a negative light were dropped. After that, I saw the rest as a morality play where justice was dealt.

I've decided that inclusion of Upstream Color and Under the Skin is my litmus test for critical lists of the decade. I've returned to both regularly.

both of those movies would be on my list, though i'm like... physically incapable of returning to them. thankfully they both burned themselves into my mind on first contact

the first twenty minutes of upstream color is body horror even beyond my personal threshold and the drowning scene in under the skin is just... nope, can't do it again

Y'all should watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Some of the people really laying into Waves probably need to take a step back from the A24 backlash pileon but ... I can absolutely see the validity of the criticisms about the first half in particular.

I'm always get some anxiety that ILX FILM GUY movies are are like The Souvenir and Gloria Bell where its like "a subtle, unhurried character study of a woman navigating life's valleys and occasional peaks"

And like exciting, cool, exploitationy art-house stuff like A24 is for herbs and noobs

And Gloria Bell is a remake, so we all prefer the Chilean original. Whine better, Whiney!

is the remake worth a watch? i really liked the original but kinda assumed there was no point to the remake except to sell a proven commodity to an anglo audience.

Latin American cinema has been really great with those subtle studies of middle aged women, btw. Gloria, Las Herederas (which might still be on Netflix), and The Desert Bride.

Marriage Story swept the Gotham Awards, winning best feature, best actor, best screenplay, and the audience award. Akwafina won best actress, and Taylor Russell (Waves) won breakthrough performer. American Factory won best documentary.

With Bo Burnham and Awkwafina, our current path to a celebrated cinema career is lined with crypto-racist rap YouTubes. Really cannot wait for Riff Raff and Lil Dicky to be crowned the new Welles and Bergman
