Most of the people who believe it was murder don't have any faith that the continuing investigation into the pedo ring will be legit and there's nothing we can do about it. It's just this absurd obvious thing that we'll be told to forget about until we eventually do and the only recourse left is to turn it into a punchline, hoping the meme will catch fire and keep enough spotlight on the case as it unfolds that it'll (maybe?) be harder for Ghislaine to slip on a banana peel in her cell or whatever.

I have no idea how to evaluate it. I’ve experienced someone killing themselves while on suicide watch in a psychiatric hospital, and prisons are worse at mental health care than that.

So weighing up the odds that a man facing prison for child abuse kills himself against the idea that people in power may have had interests in killing him etc.

I’m not sure that the suicide story doesn’t hold the balance of probabilities.

If there were things he didn’t want to come out during the trial, things which would be widely reported, I can see why he would kill himself beforehand - especially if he was confident he would be found guilty.

The main problem is the weighing the suicide against the unknown - how often do people get killed to keep them quiet. I have no idea, and it may be the case. I just find it odd that people are weighing it so easily.

it had been 13 years since the last suicide in the mcc, the cameras were turned off outside Epstein’s cell, and the staff decided to go for a nap instead of doing their jobs - negligence is possible but seems... a bit of a stretch that it all the failings just happened on the one night epstein decided to crush his hyoid bone

For the curious: the show is about investigators hired by the Catholic church charged with debunking or confirming miracles/possessions/etc. They meet a women who claims to be able to talk to God and give prophecy, so given the opportunity, the Aasif Mandvi character immediately uses the opportunity to ask if Epstein committed suicide and she answers "no", and that he was murdered with a pillow to protect "powerful men."

That doesn't qualify as "prophecy" and I doubt God would appreciate being interrogated about what an omniscient being would classify as trivia. But, hey-la, it's television.

All the Trump supporters on my Facebook feed started posting these memes daily at the same time, some of them very slickly produced, many crafted to appeal to the hard rock / heavy metal set. Makes me think this is a dry run for the 2020 meme wars. Facebook now knows who its reliable memesoldiers are.

I'm so glad there are threads like this when I have LOTS of free time on my hands. No real opinion on whether he did or didn't kill himself but clearly this has just become another rightwing distraction and given their fixation with the Clintons it doesn't seem unlikely that their their theories will point more and more towards the connection with Bill.

The discussion of conspiracy theories mid-thread was more interesting to me. I wonder, does Russiagate qualify as a conspiracy theory?

I revived another thread to kind of talk about that! Russiagate is unusual because its a centrist pushed conspiracy, and usually centrists aren't predisposed to conspiracies. Its quite an overtly top down conspiracy. The more left or right you go the more you're going to believe things aren't as presented (leading down some strange paths sometimes), centrism is kind of the opposite of that, that things are generally as they appear and/or problems are out in the open
