I've got the 235 too and love it. probably more than $100, although usually discounted on Black Friday and has dropped in price anyway now the 245 is out. The Strava phone app lets you record runs and is pretty decent (phone dependant). Used to use it regularly before getting my Forerunner

It’s not been a bad kludge for a non-runner, i’ve probly used it a...couple hundred times lol.
So i bought the $89 lovely blueee one at target, need to go retrieve. If i cant live with the turquoise which accents my coloring and fancy so well, i can buy a replacement strap on amazon for < $8, so $$aving$ are happening.
Sorry so goofy i’m listening to peggysuicide for first time since 90s it’s got me weird. i dont even know why but it’s likely ilm somehow. 😐

Huh one actual day after i decided to stop using strava app to record runs, they announce they’re cutting support for ant+ AND bluetooth data, like my tickr hrm (which i bought ages ago just for this purpose). lol screw ya anyhow strava, we had good times for 9 yrs.

this is my first real trail half, I see the top finishers for this race in previous years have come in around two hours, so I'm shooting for 2:45... slow and steady, enjoy the scenery, finish.

I had no expectations for forerunner, i am surprised how much more integrated functionality it has built in—i’m pretty familiar with garminconnect from my bike gps, but this thing is aimed much more like a fitbit thing—sleep, msging, all that. Basic, but not too basic. HRM always seems perfect so far. When i think about my first polar hrm in 93, it was considered so next level, but now lol. this is amazingly simple. likin it.

Enjoy xpsDid my first ever trail race (10K) last month. Was epic. Finished in 48 minutes whereas I've been running 38 and 39 minute 10Ks in road races this year. Have another 9 mile one next month. What do trail races entail in the USA? Over here (UK) they generally involve uneven, narrow paths through woods, lots of mud, plenty of hills and probably a stream or two to wade through for good measure.

I'd imagine there's as much course variation as there are trail races. No doubt some of them have much wilder terrain than this one I'm about to do. It doesn't have water crossings but looks to have pretty narrow trails through the woods.

trails are a whole universe of running experiences imo. i love trail running so much. the only trail experiences i don't care for are sand and ice/snow (and mud if it's just like, the entire trail is a mud pit after a rain). running on solid unbroken slickrock is one of the greatest joys i have ever experienced. also one of the only surfaces you can really run on while it's raining. thinking about the times i ran on slickrock while it was pouring and waterfalls were cascading everywhere around me still makes me tear up. i love shortish, steep inclines. i finally did some mountain running this summer - a short trail rice (5 miles) and some running on my own. unbroken uphill vertical on mountains (the wasatch front ski areas, particularly snowbird) definitely still wigs me out, i can't even comprehend doing something like the ouray-telluride race tbh. i've always wanted to do a knotty / gnarly trail on the california coast. ya'll are fast and long runners! i've been doing it for a few years but my fastest running has held firm at about 10 min / mile and i don't really like going farther than 6-7 miles. this is probably because my legs are short and i have above average muscle mass for my body size.

what shoes did you get? i used to do cascadias then solomans but they were all too narrow and the toe box would always bust out after a few months. lately i've been using my gym shoes (nike metcons) which are perfect for me, extremely solid, wide foot with a low drop.

I like how cascadias look- i tend to get tendonitis in my feet on low-drop shoes afaict, and have had great luck in ghosts. Cascadias seem to have more drop than most trailshoes, also afaict.

Good luck with it, Hunter. FWIW, I've got a Garmin Foreunner and if you're avoiding Strava, you can get plenty of data and analysis on Garmin Connect instead.
Did my first 'Parkrun' this morning. I assume Parkruns have been mentioned in this thread, but I haven't looked at it for about 10 years so I'm not sure.

so far garminconnect is fine, i can move it to golden cheetah from there to stack figures with my bike archives. good to know about parkrun (which in my head immed became "parklife" because old).
my quads are still so touchy that going down steps hurts. i am a little shocked, as i'm not exactly "off the couch," and i still have this, haha me. so anyway i did another indoor ride. i wanted to go out to enjoy the weather, but nope, i'm gonna try to stick to my rules until the longing goes away.

interestingly, i was broadcasting from the forerunner to golden cheetah, and the it worked perfectly til minute 36, and it was haywire for four minutes. i didn't even notice it for whatever reason as i was looking at the tubes and wires and ant+ info. so yup, dropouts, they happen tis true.https://www.strava.com/activities/2801796772/overview

hi Hunter. I am also a cyclist who recently took up running again (after a little over 4 years off). I haven't given up cycling but wanted to mix things up, plus I figured I'm pretty fit now - I do between 100-200k on the road bike most weeks.
Anyway, I also had seriously sore quads when I started back running. I guess my fitness was way ahead of my legs, apparently it's a common thing. To alleviate this I have gone back to doing running/walking intervals like when I first did Couch to 5k years ago. 4-5 minutes' running followed by walking for a minute or two. Seems to be working. I also bought fancy new runners, which didn't hurt...

i think my actual soreness falls out of the steep and rough descent i did, and all those eccentric contractions. I run enough that light sprints and 10k pretty brisk are usually harmless as to soreness.
since i’m not riding (cept indoor on 2x/week for calories), i may do more xc skiiing and downhill this winter. for that, the trail running was/is perfect.
nobody is as zealous on runningrunning as a convert, eh? sorry all.

i just signed up for a race next week. i did a 5k last year, so now, i'm doing a 10k. I usually do a ~monthly 6-8 miler, so I'm confident I'll make it.
i got a new pair of shoes, i replaced the beloved brooks ghosts with the cadillac ride with a pair of launch 6. def firmer underfoot, though the uppers are softer, almost baglike. they are slightly too broad in the forefoot, just as the ghosts are, but they do tighten up adequately and securely.
i still run like a duck. quack quack.

Also got a pair of Nike Zoom Vaporfly. Tried them out yesterday and took 7 seconds off the record for a Strava segment I've been after for a year and a half. Seriously quick shoes.

i went back into laptop garmin connect, which was already showing properly, re-saved for like the nth time, then went right to my phone mobile garmin connect immediately and re-synced for the nth time and BOOM like magic, i haz 4 pages yay! i'm current!

I was looking at a hall of fame wall for people that were able to eat three 14" inch pancakes in under 90 minutes at this one restaurant and noticed one dude did it five times in two weeks in ~25-35 minutes. I was like wtf but then saw he was an ultramarathoner.

anyone had either peroneal tendonitis or cuboid syndrome issues? not sure which it is. ive had no acute trauma, shoe was changed tho minimally (firmer footbed), very slight mileage increase, still low miles.
this is the exact pain that i got 10 years ago after running 3 months, had done a trail marathon and was prepping for a road marathon-- so under much more usage/stress. during the road marathon pain got excruciating at mile 12. i limped it out, but it was ridiculous. i then cured it by not walking/runnning 2 days, not running for 6 years, and riding my bike.
10k race tomorrow, because of course it is. my expected survival for tomorrow is go back to the softer ghosts for event, try to tape a cuboid sling, then see a pt sometime asap.

i used kinetic flex tape to do a cuboid sling first thing in the AM, and everything felt instantly 97+% normal under weight, no aches or twinges at all. there was no pain or progression of bad feels during the event. i actually could not believe it at all, because i typically assume that anything that feels like inflammation is only helped by rest and ibuprofen and the sacrifice of animals. wrongo.
i still need to hit a pt, but what luck. i wanted to go under 8min/mi for the distance, but didn't come too close. it was cold, snowing, and slick in places, and the hills though short were fairly abrupt which advised caution in descents. quite fun.

glad you were able to race! sounds fun... I've never run in snow or ice really. Rain, all the time. Nothing better than running before a thunderstorm on a hot summer day and getting those cool downdrafts before the rain hits.

Won my first ever running prize last night in the Severn Bridge 5 mile Night Race. 8th overall but 1st in my age group.
Was a lot tougher than I expected as it was pretty windy on the bridge and very dark in places. Good fun though as everyone had UV face paint and glow sticks - all it was missing was a set by Slipmatt.
