When you see Johnson hailed like the conquering hero, aka King Billy, at a DUP meeting and somebody sniggeringly calls out, "No surrender, eh Boris?", you know that.

But fundamentally the EU red lines have not changed and show no signs of doing so. You can travel in the right direction all you like but you’ll always hit the question of whether Northern Ireland is in the UK or EU customs territory. One is unacceptable to DUP, the other to EU
