I teach early this semester and realized that neither my aeropress nor my pourover thing fit the mouth of my insulated travel mug so I have to make coffee in some other vessel and pour it in which makes me irrationally angry

oof that really grinds my beans

provisional ilx (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 September 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

I've had my French press for awhile, it doesn't show how many cups the water level is, but I have a good sense of where to pour it til so that it's strong and that I'm not using too many beans.

Piano Mouth, Sunday, 15 September 2019 17:03 (four years ago) link

that's a good place to be

three months pass...

My God! I made my bustelo a bit strong today - acrid

I spaced out and poured tepid water into my Aeropress this morning; thereby ruining 21 grams of my current favorite beans (Counter Culture's "Big Trouble" blend) that I just spent 2 minutes hand-grinding. I wanted to weep. Life is brutal.

beard papa, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:50 (four years ago) link

I've done the same. The "must have coffee to remember how to make coffee" dilemma is something we all fall to

babu frik fan account (mh), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link

bp soothe yourself by buyin an electric burr grinder imo.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 23:17 (four years ago) link

I have done that in my aeropress before but I have low standards so I just press out the tepid water out and use the same grounds and do it again.

Yerac, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 23:18 (four years ago) link

I also don't understand this 'measuring' coffee grounds concept.

Yerac, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 23:19 (four years ago) link

I recently came back to the coffeepot realizing it be clear water in the beaker - not having ppoured water into the correct spot on top

| (Latham Green), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 20:43 (four years ago) link

I sustained an actual bodily injury this morning (sliced pinky) opening a ring-pull tin of ground roast.

― Yerac

do you mean with a scale, or do you just pour grounds into your vessel of choice without any measurement?

I don't think I could do that latter. And haven't yet bothered getting a scale, but then if you weigh the coffee you may as well weigh the water and then it just starts getting a bit too much minutae.

medicate for all (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 23:42 (four years ago) link

it takes like one second!

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 23:46 (four years ago) link

fair enough. i thought i would've gotten a scale by now to do all that. but it's winter and want the cof asap in the morning so i just keep making turkish coffee with cardamom in the morning. that is literally <2 minutes from start to finish

medicate for all (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 23:55 (four years ago) link

sorry second (superfluous) "in the morning"

medicate for all (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 23:56 (four years ago) link

I don't measure, just use a scoop and eyeball the amount to generally correlate with the amount of water I use

Dan S, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 23:57 (four years ago) link

post, yeah I don't measure coffee. I just kind of eyeball it. I try not to make it for anyone else or even myself if I can get away with it.

Yerac, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 23:57 (four years ago) link

I think somewhere above or another another thread I was complaining about a previous roommate throwing out hot water in a kettle, after I just made myself coffee, every single time because they needed the water to be the perfect temp and needed to start the boiling from scratch. I always had to walk away. I already have my subjects I am very uptight about and coffee is not one of them.

Yerac, Thursday, 16 January 2020 00:01 (four years ago) link

scoop and "close enough" temperature is fine, pre-ground is fine, the planet is dying for gods sake

Banáná hÉireann (darraghmac), Thursday, 16 January 2020 00:03 (four years ago) link

yes x2

Dan S, Thursday, 16 January 2020 00:05 (four years ago) link

I always scoop in a little bit more when I have guests because most of my friends like really strong coffee

Dan S, Thursday, 16 January 2020 00:05 (four years ago) link

Planet is dying so I take pleasure in the things I can such as makin coffee like I’m a damn scientist

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:01 (four years ago) link

not saying u have to measure i actually do not even possess a scale rn but i have measured in the past and tuning yr recipe can make u a nice cup of coffee if u like such things, and its not much effort

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:02 (four years ago) link

and then if u get some diff beans and feel like the brew is too weak or whatever u have a baseline to adjust from

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:03 (four years ago) link

Ha, I wrote the exact same thing as silby. So many things in life I can't control - the least I can do is take a few extra seconds to make a perfect cup each morning.

beard papa, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:04 (four years ago) link

the coffee thing im actually a psycho for is a burr grinder, if i didnt have one id def 1000x rather grind at the store than use a blade grinder

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:05 (four years ago) link

id rather have no coffee device and just make cowboy coffee (which is awesome tbf) and have a burr grinder than not have the grinder

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:07 (four years ago) link

I successfully cleaned out my dumb blade grinder and now I have a nice spice mill

babu frik fan account (mh), Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:10 (four years ago) link

what kind do you use?

beard papa, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:12 (four years ago) link

capresso infinity, its a really nice device

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:14 (four years ago) link

is it easy to clean? one thing I love about my Hario Mini is how I can take the whole thing apart and clean every component.

beard papa, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:17 (four years ago) link

it doesnt really need to be cleaned i mean ill wipe it down but i just let the grinder do its thing not sure how hard it is to take apart

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:19 (four years ago) link

I have never thought about cleaning my coffee maker

Dan S, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:22 (four years ago) link

I think I have a cuisinart burr grinder. maybe i should try to clean it.

Yerac, Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:49 (four years ago) link

I clean my grinder every few months with gentle dish soap and I’m always excited for those first couple of cups. It makes a difference.

beard papa, Thursday, 16 January 2020 02:04 (four years ago) link

Of course you measure the grounds - otherwise you are the furtherst Barbarians the huns have yet blessed

Interested in knowing how much people weigh out per cup.

beard papa, Friday, 17 January 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

my personal measurement is 1 and a half tablespoons per cup of water

bidenfan69420 (jim in vancouver), Friday, 17 January 2020 22:21 (four years ago) link

4 minutes in the french press

bidenfan69420 (jim in vancouver), Friday, 17 January 2020 22:22 (four years ago) link

For pourover I do 15 or 16 mL per gram of coffee.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Friday, 17 January 2020 22:45 (four years ago) link

i do 4mins too, my phone now recommends the timer to me in the morning

lag∞n, Friday, 17 January 2020 22:45 (four years ago) link

my chemex for two

36 g beans med-fine ground fresh
50 mL water to bloom for 30 seconds
550 mL water poured over grounds slowly for about two minutes, trying to gently agitate the grounds all the while
a minute of waiting for coffee to fill chemex

My daily is Counter Culture’s Hologram blend, which is plus/minus a Mocha Java style, for not too much money.

rb (soda), Friday, 17 January 2020 23:35 (four years ago) link

my roommate that i was silently judging for wasting already heated water, she and her bf, who was always over, were a chemex couple. she gave him a key to our place without telling me so he would let himself in, not say anything and just disappear into her bedroom like the dude living in the closet in Real Genius. I kind of hated him.

Yerac, Saturday, 18 January 2020 00:06 (four years ago) link

36g coffee is also what I use to make enough for two regular size mugs. I don't weigh the water, but I do pour over into a carafe with a line on the side that I aim for.

o. nate, Saturday, 18 January 2020 02:21 (four years ago) link

I have a Moccamaster drip coffee maker, I use pre-ground Peet's French Roast and don't really carefully measure the grounds or the water, but I think I have a sense about what is the right amount. I prepare the coffee maker at night before I go to bed and start it when I get up in the morning. it's easy and I like the coffee

Dan S, Saturday, 18 January 2020 02:42 (four years ago) link

I decided long ago that my coffee grinder is reserved for spices

Dan S, Saturday, 18 January 2020 02:54 (four years ago) link

I use the scoop that copes with the coffee apparatus

babu frik fan account (mh), Saturday, 18 January 2020 04:15 (four years ago) link

comes with it. then I cope

babu frik fan account (mh), Saturday, 18 January 2020 04:15 (four years ago) link

beans beans good for the scoop
the more you drink em the more you poop
