I didn't think he would either, but the NC GOP's gotta be sweating.

Margin of victory: 2% - roughly 4200 votes.

Seems like this is every election in my recent memory. Could just a few more Dems get off their asses to the voting booth ffs?

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 02:56 (six years ago)

That...kinda happened in the midterms?

When I am afraid, I put my toast in you (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 02:58 (six years ago)

Midterms were good, they were not the massive repudiation I would have wished.

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 03:03 (six years ago)

Given the failure of the entire media and governmental infrastructures of the US to repudiate an openly treasonous looting of the country, the voting public did a reasonable job of gesturing towards it.

Midterms were better than expected by every metric.

Newp. After voting Imma go into an extended news blackout / drinking jag / induced coma / remote cabin. Following partial returns is just not a thing I can do anymore. 42 years in DC, loads of political engagement and volunteering and just... no.

I am not going to sit in front of a television or computer while people talk about how with two percent of precincts reporting, Shmurp is up by fifty points, BUT WAIT, we just got results from Glurp County, which includes suburban Gleepburg. Those voters tend to be more blurpservative. So Shmurp is going to have to do really well with the college students and lacrosse moms in Norzberg County.

Ramen? No thanks, I prefer them cooked (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 12:29 (six years ago)

Gleepburg is more purple these days.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 12:40 (six years ago)

Yep. Putting myself through a repeat of election night 2016 might literally kill me. And I mean literally. Vote and then all contact with the outside world ceases until mo(u)rning.

CBS News reports:

Aggravation over Iran and the Taliban had intensified recently as Mr. Trump wanted a meeting to take place at Camp David and is open to a meeting with Iran’s president.

But three sources directly involved tell CBS News White House correspondent Major Garrett that the main irritant that drove Mr. Trump to distraction was his belief that Bolton or those close to Bolton leaked a story about Mr. Trump asking about whether nuclear weapons could be used to abate hurricanes.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 15:58 (six years ago)

Let’s say you are a taliban and you receive ‘an invitation’ ‘from the president’ ‘to discuss peace’ ‘at Camp David’, how suspicious would you be?

from whom?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:02 (six years ago)

Ask the women of Afghanistan if they’re cool with going back to taliban rule

Heez, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:04 (six years ago)

quite a binary you have there

I say this as some whose wife goes to Kabul several times a year to work on empowering women there. I really don’t think they’re super cool with going back to what it was

Heez, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:09 (six years ago)

absolutely loving the idea that Trump fired Bolton for leaking about something dumb Trump asked over a year before Bolton was in the White House

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:09 (six years ago)

It’s possible to both hate taliban rule and foreign intervention.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:11 (six years ago)

or to love both

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:11 (six years ago)

yes, it is.

Heez, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:12 (six years ago)

Especially considering how foreign intervention did little to change taliban rule.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:12 (six years ago)

well i'm definitely not trying to justify the intervention

Heez, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:20 (six years ago)

Agreed that how you leave the place is important.

Sorry I misunderstood you earlier.

"we" (the militarist dumbshits) will never get it right

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 16:34 (six years ago)

NC republicans promised NC house democrats that they wouldn’t pass any legislation while the democrats were away at an 11/9 memorial service. Then broke the governor’s veto on budget legislation as soon as everyone was gone.

Can’t wait until Biden gets nominated so he can restore more of this type of bipartisanship!

Some ways would be marginally better than others, but I'm not sure there is any possible way to leave that would produce the kind of results you would approve. The women of Afghanistan, even if they were a monolithic bloc, have so little power that they cannot control events, or even influence events in a meaningful way.

The combined weight of USA/NATO/western NGOs have not changed that equation nearly enough in the past 18 years to alter the fundamental vulnerability of Afghan women and there's no reason to believe they can dictate such a change as part of their peace terms. That's the reality of it.

Post 9/11 thread for people to post the wildest shit they remember from 01 to 06

I'll start:

People thought Osama had an entire mountain hollowed out that he was using as his base and that's why AQ was hard to find and that somehow a group of like 30 dudes arranged this. pic.twitter.com/IPGVQ1xfhs

honestly I'd forgotten about a lot of this stuff but I agree with the guy's point that Obama's failure to investigate/prosecute any of this stuff has pretty much led us to where we are today
