I think sharpiegate is related to his poor vision, which has been speculated on elsewhere. I think he thought the part of the FL panhandle that was on the edge of the predicted range of the storm was actually part of Alabama. There is a longitudinal line on the map which might have contributed to this. The reason he is doubling down so hard (other than never wanting to be wrong) is that a) he doesn’t want to be called out for having bad vision, and b) he doesn’t want his base in that area to know that he doesn’t know where Alabama ends and Florida begins.

Before they knew the storm was going to turn right, back when it was in the USVIs, the gulf of Mexico and AL were certainly possibilities (after failing to turn right, passing through the Florida panhandle and out into the gulf). Trump was at worst out of date since at the time he warned AL, the forecast already had the storm turning right. Of all the things to call Trump on, this is one of the weakest and that's why he's playing it up

Uhh...no. there was at most a 20% chance of a sliver of Alabama getting tropical storm winds, but that had passed out of the forecast by the time Trump said what he said.

He shared a Spaghetti model, which is mot a forecast, and includes experimental models that aren't even included in the NHC forecast track as proof (and they were well out of date).

He also warned Alabama that they might get hit hard, that there was at one point a 95% chance of them being hit (when there never was) and there's a photo of dude being briefed on a 5 day forecast with no Alabama track.

Dude made a dumb mistake and misremembered something but nobody would be talking about it if he didn't continue to needlessly self-own himself daily

The National Weather Service had to issue a statement to correct him so Alabamalamians didn't mistakenly think they'd be affected, so they didn't think it was so pointless.

He also repeated it at a FEMA briefing saying he had new news that Alabama might get a piece of it after NWS had already corrected him.

this is just his way of boosting his brand as a tireless fighter against the liberals and mainstream media, but only his loyal base are buying that brand these days. they're the same ones who buy the hats.

He's playing it up because he's a thin-skinned jackass who can never ever be wrong about anything.
And the "issue" is more about him changing an official NWS map to assuage his ego than his info being out of date.

Also you gotta remember that Trump's perceived legitimacy is predicated on this "choose your own facts" philosophy that only works if he can convince his followers that the media cares more about bringing him down than they do actual facts. I guess he somehow thinks this is a winning battle on that front. Remember how he spent his entire first month in office whining about the crowd size at his inauguration?

personally the only way I can get myself into his headspace is by thinking back to when I was an 8 year old kid desperately trying to get out of being grounded by arguing that my parents just had it out for me. he's already dug his heels in and the only thing he knows how to do is dig deeper. when I was a kid I was the same way.

I know we don't have a president where I'm from, but if we had one, I'm pretty sure I'd think one of her biggest responsibilities would be being up to date on potential catastrophic natural disasters.
