uh I thought part of the story was that the drinking fountain was broken and the guards told the inmates to drink out of the toilet bowl

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/adolfoflores/immigrants-drinking-toilets-water-aoc-border-patrol

Rep. Joaquin Castro said that at Border Patrol Station 1 near El Paso a group of 15 to 20 mothers were held in a cell that had a toilet with no running water.

"There was a toilet but no running water for people to drink," Castro said. "One of the women said she was told by an agent to drink water out of the toilet."

frogbs, Thursday, 5 September 2019 22:45 (six years ago)

xps Oh I thought you meant it didn't actually happen, not that it did but it wasn't actually a toilet. I agree w you, though I think AOC herself pointed out that those toilet/fountain combos were not working when she toured the place and so it was stagnant water whose potability was unknown.

it a common feature of correctional facilities

I get your point, but calling jails and prisons "correctional facilities" is parroting some hardcore doublespeak. I do it, too, sometimes, but I wish I didn't.

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 5 September 2019 22:53 (six years ago)

no, it is commonly accepted nomenclature in use by public officials and in public documents. It's called the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and that's how they refer to them.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 September 2019 23:12 (six years ago)

the utility of the term is that it encompasses jails, prisons, healthcare facilities, housing, temporary structures, all kinds of stuff that might be under the purview of a single agency.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 September 2019 23:14 (six years ago)

commonly accepted nomenclature in use by public officials and in public documents.

This does not preclude it being doublespeak. These are common places for such occluded language to be put to use. I would say that lumping together "healthcare facilities, housing and temporary structures" with "jails and prisons" is not a way to achieve clarity about one's subject matter, but a way to make understanding what is being discussed more difficult.

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 5 September 2019 23:25 (six years ago)

True, but also true of a lot of things that we don’t mind saying - Department of Defense, United States, etc

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Thursday, 5 September 2019 23:38 (six years ago)

What i was discussing was facilities run by a dept that manages imprisoned populations, which includes all the types i listed, among others. This is the opposite of obfuscation.

Perhaps it is time I was sent to a re-educational facility to engage in a few struggle sessions so my anti-social behavior can get corrected.

What constitutes a toilet?

Wow. As Trump primary challengers circle, Republican state parties in South Carolina, Nevada, Arizona and Kansas are expected to cancel their 2020 primaries and caucuses @politicoalex⁩ reports. https://t.co/sKGUyy6OrR

good morning mr president

The Fake News Media was fixated on the fact that I properly said, at the beginnings of Hurricane Dorian, that in addition to Florida & other states, Alabama may also be grazed or hit. They went Crazy, hoping against hope that I made a mistake (which I didn’t). Check out maps.....

The Texas GOP is also courting the out-of-state newcomers — the “refugees fleeing oppressive legislatures,” as Dickey calls them — who have made Texas the fastest growing state in the country.

Interesting choice of noun for those fleeing oppressive legislatures.

Republicans are rushing to address the perception that they’re predominately the party of older white men in an increasingly diverse state.

ah yes that "perception"

not really. GOP is hemorrhaging votes from women.

Οὖτις, Friday, 6 September 2019 17:25 (six years ago)

I think sharpiegate is related to his poor vision, which has been speculated on elsewhere. I think he thought the part of the FL panhandle that was on the edge of the predicted range of the storm was actually part of Alabama. There is a longitudinal line on the map which might have contributed to this. The reason he is doubling down so hard (other than never wanting to be wrong) is that a) he doesn’t want to be called out for having bad vision, and b) he doesn’t want his base in that area to know that he doesn’t know where Alabama ends and Florida begins.

epistantophus, Friday, 6 September 2019 17:29 (six years ago)
