Re: centrist media, I've been very pleasantly surprised at how Esquire has been calling out Trump. For a magazine that highlights $3K sweaters and $10K watches, they could have avoided alienating their rich right-wing readers.

I think it's safe to assume the former in Carlson's case but it's a mixture of both when it comes to his audience.

Just like the way they categorize what a racist is, they're only willing to see the caricatures of the group as the problem. Not to throw around fallacy names, but it's kind of a no true scotsman thing. If he insists that liberals are saying we have a white supremacist problem, but to him a white supremacist is defined narrowly as literally a skinhead with a swastika tattoo on their forehead, then yeah that's one way to misrepresent the argument. Same way racism is narrowly defined as separate water fountains and the KKK.

It's easier to justify pernicious behavior when you pretend that its strictest definition is saddled with a bunch of bogus modifiers that let you off the hook.
