So Jane Meyer wrote a piece in which the Dem party establishment expresses its regret about forcing Al Franken's resignation. Meyer, one of our best political reporters, fucked this one up. This combination of profile and investigation makes the subject sympathetic, and I'm sorry but Franken had many allegations of sexual harassment. Gillibrand and the others were right to ask for his resignation. An investigation would've confirmed what we suspected.

i mean...do they WANT impeachment proceedings going on in summer/fall 2020? is the thinking that all republicans will be in lockstep against it, most democrats will be for it, therefore it'll obliterate all other issues (including pesky progressive initiatives supported by the squad + sanders/warren, if they're the nominee) and turn everything into a referendum on trump, and they see that as a situation that likely ends up with the democratic nominee winning, no matter who it is?

or are they just fuckin dorks?

The Ravishing of ROFL Stein (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 22 July 2019 18:32 (six years ago)

btw here's what president fuckface had to say this morning

'The “Squad” is a very Racist group of troublemakers who are young, inexperienced, and not very smart. They are pulling the once great Democrat Party far left, and were against humanitarian aid at the Border...And are now against ICE and Homeland Security. So bad for our Country!'

Karl Malone, Monday, 22 July 2019 18:38 (six years ago)

Trump continued: "In fact, they said literally 100%, this never happens, I think it was close to 100, but 100% of the island itself was watching. They liked those pageants. I've had a great relationship with Puerto Rico. I'm the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico."

That's how I see it, yes. Not because they want it to drown out progressivism, but because they (correctly!) see the American public as having a very short attention span. They may not think they can spin this out into 18 months of "Trump is a crook" leading the news cycle, and if they feel they can get six months of that, they want those six months to be May-November 2020. Now you may say "why CAN'T they make "Trump is a crook" the headline every day for 18 months, since he is, in fact, a huge goddamn crook," and I get that, but I do think that once the Senate votes not to convict, which they will, lots of swing voters are going to see the matter as settled, and the last thing Democrats want is to have that happen in like February 2020.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 July 2019 18:59 (six years ago)

as with most things in american politics, i would say that about 1/3 of the voting public would be intensely absorbed with it, another 1/3 would want to punch the first 1/3 in the face, while the remaining 1/3 would be standing there with their mouths wide open, clayton kershaw style

Karl Malone, Monday, 22 July 2019 19:14 (six years ago)

U.S. President Donald Trump has argued that many Americans now using SNAP do not need it given the strong economy and low unemployment, and should be removed as a way to save taxpayers as much as $15 billion.

“Some states are taking advantage of loopholes that allow people to receive the SNAP benefits who would otherwise not qualify and for which they are not entitled,” USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue told reporters on a conference call on Monday.

SNAP provides free food to some 40 million Americans, or about 12% of the total U.S. population.

ah yes, that strong economy and low unemployment which nonetheless somehow fails to provide enough food to one in ten americans

Anyone who wants to fuck with SNAP (et al) should be forced to go through the process of getting a card and then living off of it for a number of months.

Those poll results really say so much about where we are as a country (world?). It's like bitching about how you can no longer walk on the injured foot you left untended for so long that it's become a swollen, gangrenous mass, occasionally interrupted by hallucinatory paeans to a nonexistent yesteryear induced by your impending death from sepsis.

ppl dont wanna be nuked; NYT:

Afghanistan demanded a clarification on Tuesday of President Trump’s comments a day earlier that he could have had the country “wiped off the face of the earth” but did not “want to kill 10 million people.” In a sharply worded statement, the government of President Ashraf Ghani noted that Afghanistan expected its relationship with the United States to be “grounded on common interests and mutual respect.”

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 July 2019 14:54 (six years ago)

Wow, so lame of them to get all _offended_ by that. It was obviously a hilarious joke, lighten up Afghanistan jeez

Citizens of the US can't expect their relationship with the government to be grounded in common interests and mutual respect, but good luck, Afghanistan.

incredibly depressing to have a president making the sort of "jokes" I'd hear as a kid about how we could just nuke the middle east

incredibly difficult to be an adult and realize due to a past you've inherited, you're always going to have some obligations or

donald probably walks into a room with his kids and wishes he could just remove them from the planet half the time, too, though
