I suspect it'll be Boris doing the cosying up tbh.

“If Boris Johnson is the next Prime Minister and is unable to get a better deal from the European Union by the 31st of October, he should ask the EU for an extension to the UK’s leaving date”

lmao thread

In the last week we have seen:

The former General Secretary of the Labour Party criticising decisions for which he was responsible and being taken entirely seriously.

The Guardian just raised the possibility of Dominic Raab as Home Secretary which tbh terrifies me more than Johnson as PM.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 July 2019 16:45 (six years ago)

maybe it's for the best these cunts will all be in situ when the revolution comes

imago, Friday, 19 July 2019 16:55 (six years ago)

Love too watch this thread radicalising people in real time

gyac, Friday, 19 July 2019 16:58 (six years ago)

I can imagine Rabat having an outsize influence as I can’t really see Johnson and Truss doing much work.

ShariVari, Friday, 19 July 2019 17:02 (six years ago)

You don’t hear much about the Moroccan lobby these days.

gyac, Friday, 19 July 2019 17:07 (six years ago)

Been a while since we had a proper escalation:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/19/british-tanker-iran-capture-fears-stena-impero-uk-ship-latest

pomenitul, Friday, 19 July 2019 18:07 (six years ago)

The source added that Britain had raised its ship security level to 3, the highest category, for British-flagged ships in Iranian waters early on Tuesday.

“Level 3 for shipping would be comparable to ‘critical’ and that is where there is a much-heightened risk ..,” the British source said. “We went to level 3 for Iranian waters at the start of this week.

maybe the IRGC have gone up to level 4, too bad!

calzino, Friday, 19 July 2019 18:39 (six years ago)

It’s less an escalation than reciprocity. idk how, under the current political circumstances, you accidentally sail into Iranian water.

ShariVari, Friday, 19 July 2019 18:42 (six years ago)

The original seizure of the Iranian tanker by the Royal Marines was legit strange in a way that I’ve not seen fully articulated in the press coverage, tbh.

ShariVari, Friday, 19 July 2019 18:49 (six years ago)

they are saying it happened in an international waterway, but looking at that map of there isn't much distance between mainland Iran and any of that waterway there.

calzino, Friday, 19 July 2019 18:56 (six years ago)

If any media personnel is reading this, the ship is British flagged, that doesn't mean it's a British ship, it's ran by a Swedish company, operated by a Scottish company.

lol!

calzino, Friday, 19 July 2019 19:13 (six years ago)

Iranian news agencies apparently reporting they have taken a 2nd tanker.

calzino, Friday, 19 July 2019 19:15 (six years ago)

Can't really blame them tbh. Still, this does not bode well.

pomenitul, Friday, 19 July 2019 19:19 (six years ago)

when I saw Rory trending I thought he might have selflessly offered himself as a peace envoy/hostage to Iran, to go there in full Islamic dress with a bag of plunder from the British Museum. But alas it is only golf related crap!

calzino, Friday, 19 July 2019 19:55 (six years ago)

as a speaker of dari (basically just a dialect of farsi) i think he's the man for the job

Del Piero’s resignation letter is a peach.

A Labour Party so stricken that it can’t keep someone like ⁦@GloriaDePiero⁩ on its benches is in deep, deep trouble. This, from her resignation speech tonight. pic.twitter.com/b1M6ANAhZz

Gloria the latest in a long line of young talent to walk: Heidi Alexander, Tristram Hunt, Jamie Reed, Iain Wright, Michael Dugher, Tom Blenkinsop, Chuka Ummuna, Chris Leslie, Luciana Berger. Like the Aztecs, sacrificing their best.

— Tom Newton Dunn (@tnewtondunn) July 19, 2019

pissed myself laughing @ this Newton Dunce comment as well.

Side note that the political editor of The Sun thinks Heidi Alexander was a Labour MP.

ShariVari, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:27 (six years ago)

oops!

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:27 (six years ago)

easy mistake to make when you are making lists of arsehole tories.

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:29 (six years ago)

gyac has corrected me - Heidi Alexander was a Labour MP

ShariVari, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:36 (six years ago)

Heidi Alexander was the Labour MP for Lewisham who quit to work with Sadiq Khan.

Lol @ Tom Blenkinsop in that list, though. His seat went Tory in 2017, against the grain, and he jumped before he got booted. Now he spends all day everyday on twitter tweeting anti-Labour trolls and punching left. Does he even work?

Here he is lecturing Diane Abbott on racism:

So you’re saying Labour isn’t now institutionally racist...but every leader prior to summer 2015 was more racist than the present leader?

Contortions of logic encapsulated within self delusion.

— Tom Blenkinsop (@TomBlenkinsop) September 10, 2018

What a loss, am I right?

gyac, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:38 (six years ago)

ahh ..Heidi Allen confusion. That Newton Dunce comment is still hilariously bad

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:43 (six years ago)

I keep imagining that TND tweet as sung by Neil Young.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:43 (six years ago)

Let's just say that on Monday these people get their way and Corbyn resigns. Do they really think that he's going to be replaced by a pliant 2006ish centrist? Because with the membership the way it is that's bordering on delusional.

It's possible that Labour MPs could prevent even a token lefty from getting through the nominations process but the make up of the PLP is considerably different from 2015 and any contest would be very different. Not gonna happen, obviously.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:51 (six years ago)

When it got to Tristram I was sure it was a joke

jou're much too jung, girl (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:53 (six years ago)

Is there an unabashed left-wing alternative to Corbyn within the Labour Party?

pomenitul, Saturday, 20 July 2019 08:58 (six years ago)

some say Rebecca Long-Bailey is the heir apparent.

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:01 (six years ago)

she's one of them 2nd gen Irish so obv a friend of terrorists!

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:02 (six years ago)

RLB is John McDonnell’s choice I think but I prefer Laura Pidcock. There’s tons of leftish alternatives, I don’t see who the right could put up as a unity candidate.

gyac, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:07 (six years ago)

Yvette Cooper is the people's choice. The people of the political commentariat, that is.

Arthur Lowe & Love (Tom D.), Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:15 (six years ago)

ideally they'd need someone who is a mix between Tristam Hunt and Yvette Cooper, with the swagger of Rory S.

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:18 (six years ago)

to the political commentariat "talent" = looking like a classic squared nice but dim tim tory. that is literally their only criteria of judging a pols talent.

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:22 (six years ago)

squared jaw

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:22 (six years ago)

of course they have be corrupt corporate shills as well.

calzino, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:23 (six years ago)

It's not just a simple left-right thing any more, stance on Europe is going to be a huge issue from now on which is another reason it's not going to be Cooper. She has been genuinely helpful in frustrating the Tories' more destructive tendencies this year but she represents a heavily Leave-voting constituency and has already committed to not blocking Brexit.

It's possible she could row back on this (hell, she's rowed back on worse) but even then it's difficult to see her making it credibly stick.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:26 (six years ago)

parachute in empress caroline and announce green labour merger

imago, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:35 (six years ago)

imago, Saturday, 20 July 2019 09:36 (six years ago)

nah parachuting involves flying, she'd have to be catapulted with one constructed from forest-friendly timber of course.
