Wes previously had a pop at Laura Pidcock for referencing the General Strike of the 20's, but he got it mixed with Winter of Discontent in the 70's. Which is a common line of attack from the tories against Labour, but a very weak one as the spring, summer, and autumns of discontent that followed under a thatcher went on much longer and besides a member of the labour party who parrots this nonsense is a fucking disgrace tbf - even if he gets it all wrong!

Any member of the Labour Party who uses the phrase Winter of Discontent should be suspended immediately and expelled shortly thereafter.

#Haringey Council will not be cooperating with the Home Office
enforcement teams in sharing personal data of rough sleepers. No complicity
with #HostileEnvironment . We expect every organisation delivering services on
our behalf to share this ethos within our borders and outside.

— Haringey (@haringeycouncil) July 16, 2019

good work by Haringey here. Also vile charities that cause homeless people to get deported should lose charity status and face massive fines and public disgrace - what a corrupt bunch of self serving, toothless shitheads they've been in the face of hostile environment and austerity. Wouldn't donate a penny to any of these charities, would rather give anything I can afford straight to a homeless person. fuck every last one of them (well apart from Carers Count who helped me a lot recently!).

I'm still seething at those Tory bootlickers NAS (even tho my son goes to a NAS school) for congratulating the Conservative government on blue badge for autistic people u-turn. They publicly congratulated them after they were forced into the u-turn after the family of a autistic man successfully took legal action against the DfT, without any help from NAS I would add.

Nobody seems to have told Chuka ("So glad to be in a party, the LibDems, free of this poison") he's joined the remain wing of the tory party, and they've had their own share of racism/AS problems in recent years - it just didn't get much intensive reporting because they are a fucking joke. And Swinson/Davey both voted with the Con whip in 2010-15 more than some of the most odious of their party did, including Hunt. So if he thinks the LibDems didn't have a clammy hand on Hostile Environment as well he is delusional.

Matthew Parris just said what most Tories are dying to say. That brown and black Brits who were born here like me will never really be British or deserve to be seen as such because we aren’t white. That’s it. That’s the whole article. Saved you a read.

— Amna (@AGlasgowGirl) July 17, 2019

And everyone going on about “but Parris was such a nice guy what a shock”, yeah, racists aren’t all illiterate Tommy Robinsons clones some of them are polite, well mannered, highly educated people with column inches and the rest are currently running our country.

— Amna (@AGlasgowGirl) July 17, 2019

It's very quickly got to the stage of not only migrants being smeared and dehumanised but ancestry is being scrutinised, with "second generation immigrants" being dehumanised.

We've seen this story before, it doesnt end well.

gyac, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 16:39 (six years ago)

Always hated that cunt Parris since he did one of those Try Living On Benefits for a week thing for ITV years ago, when he was still a Tory MP. He lasted about three days before running out of money and giving up and still said it hadn't changed his mind about people on benefits being paid too much.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 17:05 (six years ago)

Thinking about it, I'm a "second generation immigrant", although my dad was a white New Zealander so it's probably...okay? Only Mr Parris could tell me for sure though.

Matthew Parris was born in South Africa btw. Also...

His parents ended up working and living in Catalonia, Spain, where Parris later bought a house.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 17:17 (six years ago)

I've heard him attacking terrible things like child benefit and discounted tube travel for pensioners before he is a true enemy of the people.

calzino, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 17:54 (six years ago)

But he doesn't need to look at the world from other people's perspectives cos he's a self absorbed cunt.

calzino, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

It's a terrible look for Tories being self-absorbed blinded by privilege racist cunts.

jou're much too jung, girl (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:04 (six years ago)

On 8 July 2011, on Radio 4's Any Questions, at the height of the furore surrounding the alleged illegal and corrupt activities of News of the World journalists, Parris eulogised the newspaper and gave an enthusiastic appreciation of what he considered the virtues and positive achievements of Rupert Murdoch.

christ, I'm sad no-lifer enough to remember listening to this at the time - he's a very loyal servant.

calzino, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 19:12 (six years ago)

First, there should be no swallowing Labour’s narrative that free markets lead to terrible excesses. Indeed, it is more often vested interests’ attempts to curtail the market that is the source of our problems.

free the markets says Liz, remember all that over-regulation that caused the last crash!

Isabel Hardman has good contacts in the Labour Right? You could say that.

Hardman is currently in a relationship with John Woodcock, the Member of Parliament for Barrow and Furness,[16][17] who currently sits as an independent MP, having resigned from the Labour Party amid an investigation into claims of sexual harassment.[18]

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 18 July 2019 12:33 (six years ago)

this thread should have been a book, and while I don’t agree with it all, it is pretty spot on in places particularly re the labour right’s intellectual vacuity and petulance

How should the Labour right respond to Corbyn?

Many are panicking right now, due to the very high probability of an election this year. It's one which Labour could win (but I do not expect them to do so).

A longish (edit: too long) thread, giving my mostly subjective opinions.

— DPWFreeborn (@DPWF0) July 17, 2019

This is right but goes no further. It’s pretty clear Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbott don’t trust British intelligence because of their experience with being surveilled as part of leftist campaigns in their younger days - it’s why they came out in support of the SpyCops campaign where a different leadership wouldn’t have - and they cite A Very British Coup in their thinking. That’s based on the plots against Harold Wilson ofc.

gyac, Thursday, 18 July 2019 13:01 (six years ago)

It’s one of the things that makes their pro-cop stance both incoherent and disappointing.
