Pelosi said she’ll ask faith-based/evangelical groups to appeal to president to stop ICE raids. “They put him in office.”

by the way, if you confront evangelicals with this, what they say is "i just want people to follow the law"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 11 July 2019 17:07 (six years ago)

look i think she has to operate on the assumption that these people will do the right thing if she appeals passively to a go-between voting bloc that has always completely sided with the opposition.

omar little, Thursday, 11 July 2019 17:10 (six years ago)

Morals are very important to Evangelical Christians so I think we should just trust that they'll make the most morally-defensible decision in any given situation. I'm sure if we point out that Donald Trump behaves in an immoral fashion they'll realize that giving him their support was a mistake.

Nancy hasn't been disrespected this much since she first arrived on Ellis Island.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 11 July 2019 17:37 (six years ago)

There was also that time her daughters ordered a pizza wth penne on it and Nancy was all "That is not a pizza!!!"

Evan, Thursday, 11 July 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

i would slur her with an italian slur but i forgot what they all even are and i can't find my slur dictionary

j., Thursday, 11 July 2019 17:51 (six years ago)

I presume anti-Italian prejudice (certainly a real thing midcentury) hadn't vanished by Pelosi's youth -- in the late '30s there was a major magazine profile (LIfe?) of Joe DiMaggio that literally complimented "He doesn't reek of garlic" -- but one of these things is not like the other.

I still don’t get that. I assumed he was trying to refer to Warren’s DNA test but doesn’t know how fractions work?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 11 July 2019 19:15 (six years ago)

either that or he thinks she's 4167% Native, maybe why he calls her "Pocahontas"??

frogbs, Thursday, 11 July 2019 19:17 (six years ago)

you could be 110% right on that, it's tough to tell with this guy

trump's cultural references are slightly fresher than john sterling's, but a lot less coherent

it is high . . . it is far . . . it is caught fake news

mookieproof, Thursday, 11 July 2019 19:27 (six years ago)

1/1024 = 1/(2^10), which I guess in allele division means ten generations ago or so.

Per CNN, Trump expected to back away from census citizenship question, direct Commerce to seek data through other sources: https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/11/politics/trump-census-executive-action/index.html

mott the hoopleheads (voodoo chili), Thursday, 11 July 2019 20:11 (six years ago)

what would have prevented everyone from just fucking lying on the census? is it a 'under pentalty of perjury' sort of thing?

also re: italians as POC: my wife has a friend who is just a few years older than us (in her 50's) and she acts all the time ike this is still a thing. She's from NY.

akm, Thursday, 11 July 2019 20:14 (six years ago)

the point is that many people would, rather than lie, be intimidated out of filling out the census at all.

Have tons of family who have gone to/taught at UAF in particular. My cousin is likely completely screwed. And of course the native kids in the villages, and children of immigrants, and working-class hunters/fishers who want to go to college without leaving the state will end up getting a pathetic education as the remaining professors make their escape plans.

frogbs, Thursday, 11 July 2019 21:01 (six years ago)

so this uh """"social media summit"""" seems like a good use of White House resources

Trump says his social media following used to just go up, but now it's like "up, down, up, down," and even when it goes up, "it goes very slowly," and "sometimes it comes down substantially," and he doesn't know what's going on.

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) July 11, 2019

Trump: "There's no doubt in my mind that I should have millions and millions - I have millions of people, so many people I wouldn't believe it, but I know that we've been blocked, People come up to me and they say, 'Sir, I can't get you. I can't follow you.'"

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) July 11, 2019

actually I totally buy that Trump's fans can't figure out how to follow him

frogbs, Thursday, 11 July 2019 21:05 (six years ago)

maybe he's misunderstanding what people mean when they say "i can't follow you"

akm, Thursday, 11 July 2019 21:35 (six years ago)

so reports are he's going to back off on the citizenship in census but send out some other questionnaire. Why would they think anyone would fill that out rather than just throw it away? who the fuck is going to fill out a form that implicates themselves? what kind of dumb world is this?

@realDonaldTrump: I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air. Unregulated Crypto Assets can facilitate unlawful behavior, including drug trade and other illegal activity....

A grad student out of my department was en route to Fairbanks with her family to start a tenure track job at UAF last week; not sure if it’s even worth unpacking at this point for what is probably now a one year gig.

xps i wonder if they write the contracts for those things so that they're actually enforceable/you can sue them for breaking - usually the non-tenure-track ones are so unfavorable to the faculty party that the university can basically drop its end at will
