I mean, this only holds if you consider the Times a liberal/left paper and the Times has led on that agenda more than any other part of the media. I mean, what else do they pay Janice Turner for?

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:38 (six years ago)

Sadly, Janice Turner will be in post and be given carte blanche to write any old shite as long as her husband is Executive Editor (he is Peter Preston’s son)

suzy, Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:44 (six years ago)

the guardian had an editorial concern trolling for transphobia and saying neither side is wrong in the debate between trans people and terfs over the gender recognition act, lest we forget

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:54 (six years ago)

Not denying that about the Guardian (or the NS) but the Times is the paper of record and it’s running scare stories about trans people on the front page.

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:58 (six years ago)

I don’t think this was posted? Love love love Pidcock.

"Are you bored, Nick?" The BBC's Nick Robinson @bbcnickrobinson has his arse handed to him on a plate - by @LauraPidcockMP. 👏👏👏 #r4today pic.twitter.com/PDmMSTfIOg

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 22:34 (six years ago)

yeah posted something about that at the time. she's really excellent. "arse handed on a plate" is probably a bit strong - but she didn't brook no bullshit distraction speak from him and reminded him why she was there.

nice that MI5 got tom harwood the call up to QT as a treat for his aman smear

God, I know. Horrible ghoul.

At least we still have Jonny L.

It’s time to legalise cannabis. Supporters in UK outnumber opponents 3:2, in London 3:1. Stop criminalising young people! Disclosure: I was arrested for possession at 19 but now I prefer to self-medicate with alcohol in moderation (usually) & hate skunk https://t.co/WlJ4jK8SIK

I’m sure @TommyCorbyn is on the case, both with Jon L & his old man

can sense a long Peter Hitchens screed is in the post

calzino, Friday, 5 July 2019 07:40 (six years ago)

Amused to see the gutter press trying it on with Tommy Corbyn’s National Hemp Service a few months back, to no avail (tbf to the gutter press, they generally prefer Class A’s).

suzy, Friday, 5 July 2019 08:08 (six years ago)

the jen williams piece on oldham has been getting a bit of attention and is worth a look if anyone hasn't seen it yet. it's pretty broad but one little stat that stood out - Arrears at the borough’s social landlord, First Choice, have risen by nearly £500,000 since Universal Credit came in.

ogmor, Friday, 5 July 2019 10:09 (six years ago)

What has Owen Jones said or done that is bad?

I think if you look at all the people in the media, here or anywhere, he must be in the best 1% of it.

I don't like everything he says but I strongly consider him to be on my side and am glad he is out there campaigning, one way or another, every day.

ya narcissism of small differences mostly about OJ, he is, taking the broader view, a good thing

Aston "Family Court" Barrett (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 5 July 2019 22:33 (six years ago)

let us never criticize him again

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:15 (six years ago)

I am most impressed with the way he quietly gets on with his campaigning in a calm manner as he usually does..

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:22 (six years ago)

he is certainly above criticism, and should never be discussed for being sucked into stupid talking points that undermine the Labour leadership

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:26 (six years ago)

big up that traffic warden though, the one that slapped a ticket on the Yack Yack bus outside court. and did it such brio and gaiety as to upset his squad of raggedyarsed beta football hooligans. And then he says "I love this job!".

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:30 (six years ago)

never had a car and hate 'em, so I've never vilified traffic wardens the way most ppl seem to.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:35 (six years ago)

people who hate traffic wardens are dicks

E.P. Thompson on the “European values” and faux internationalism of Tom Watson and his ilk: pic.twitter.com/LLxv1Itowr

— Paul O'Connell (@pmpoc) July 6, 2019

beautiful little E.P. Thompson quote here on the bullshit internationalism of the EU much celebrated by the blue face clowns. Also this morning was listening to the farming program and the agricultural sector is finding it harder to attract enough workers from eastern Europe because of exchange rates on sterling getting less favourable. So to fill this gap they are going to have to start recruiting from further afield. They have been giving 6 month temp visas to workers from Latvia/Belarus, but only 2500 so far.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 11:21 (six years ago)

If they manage to completely tank sterling brits will have to start picking their own crops again.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 11:22 (six years ago)

Rare bit of Brexit humour (because most of the traders voted out and most customers voted in) at the farmer’s market today: veg farmer/dad joke specialist asked about lettuces, says ‘well, you can have leaf or you can have Romaine’.

suzy, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

I love a lettuce joke. "a group of rich nations feeding each other goodies" isn't much of an indictment of The European Project - the food is one of the best bits

ogmor, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:42 (six years ago)

I don't think E P Thompson meant it like that, but farmers being able to grow crops that otherwise would be a loss maker thanks to EU subsidiaries is a good thing.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:53 (six years ago)

That's why brexity farmers are a strange bunch really.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:57 (six years ago)

Well partly the reason why I should have said..

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:59 (six years ago)

Lettuce jokes rule!

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 14:05 (six years ago)

It annoys me that farmers who trade to customers who are easily 40% continental European (this is Notting Hill) could’ve ever thought Brexit was worth their vote on the potential for lost custom alone. Veg farmer above voted Leave as a protest about having been asked at all/‘oh, fuck it’ in the booth/shire Tory voter loathing D Cameron.

suzy, Saturday, 6 July 2019 14:19 (six years ago)

Residua of Blut und Boden. Tilling the soil and all that.

pomenitul, Saturday, 6 July 2019 14:22 (six years ago)

I'm a frequent listener to the early morning farming show and farmers with their heads screwed on know that brexit is an existential threat to their businesses and no deal brexit is almost certain death for their businesses. One of them on this morning's show said was saying he might end up being a taxi driver the way things are going.

I got caught stealing some lettuce once. I was just trying to get a head.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 14:27 (six years ago)

That's how it starts. Tip of the iceberg.

nashwan, Saturday, 6 July 2019 14:50 (six years ago)

I went to fancy dress dressed as a lettuce, love a bit of cosplay.

suzy, Saturday, 6 July 2019 15:04 (six years ago)

Courtesy of Google images, nothing fancy. Pics of iceberg lettuce dresses are harder to come by than dresses cut from other cultivars, however.

pomenitul, Saturday, 6 July 2019 15:09 (six years ago)

the extended salad cosplay cultivarse is a completely new thing to me. that's what i like about ILX!

on the one hand cuts are bad and Tories are bad on the other hand our school system is horribly work ethicky and let the kids have some time off imo

Polly Toynbee OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 July 2019 19:08 (six years ago)

if that means less of them turn out like jess phillips that can only be a net positive for society. Because all her ambitions, ideas and instincts as a politician and a self-promoting celebrity are terminally bad for those that want change.. sorry if this has been done to death on here .. but I wish she'd fucking disappear tbh!

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 21:53 (six years ago)

Sure enough as Labour poll between 23 and 27%, Beth Rigby tweets "As Labour poll 18%..."

Brexiteers will eventually have to deal with the fact that years of free movement mean that there are many, many Europeans (myself included) who moved to the UK and intend to stay here but have no intention of ever "being British", we remain Europeans even if you don't pic.twitter.com/SxfhYemFdl

— Marie Le Conte (@youngvulgarian) July 6, 2019

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 7 July 2019 11:31 (six years ago)

Assimilation into any culture I live in is pretty hard-wired into me due to having moved from Germany to Portugal when I was four and my dad being very militant about "becoming Portuguese", but I'd say over here the problem is the host culture making it pretty clear that they have no use for any efforts in that department.

But let's be real here it's totally not French cosmopolitan types brexiteers are thinking of when they whinge about lack of assimilation.

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 7 July 2019 11:42 (six years ago)

It's not even about Europeans at all really, or at least not white Western Europeans.

Meanwhile I'm just leaving this thread here in anticipation of next week's colossal clusterfuck:

surely the issue with this Chomsky thing is less about relitigating his (really long) life's work & more about the bizarre way a section of the online left are brandishing some guy's screengrabbed email confirmation of Chomsky's one paragraph take, as if it "solves" anything?
