Yes for the record I obviously don't think ILX posts constitute joining in a pile-on as no one actually reads this board other than noted lurker John McTernan who as far as I know isn't a far-right hate figure.

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 July 2019 14:44 (six years ago)

Guys we need to calm down and keep posting as we normally do. Wasn’t accusing anyone, especially not my secret fave, of piling on OJ - just think he gets a lot of shit from people for spurious reasons as well as the normal ones.

And Matt, you’d think a regular to this thread such as yourself would remember me self-outing as MR Seu*mas M1lne a while back?

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 16:42 (six years ago)

And actually a better reason for me to defend OJ is that he does call out racism in the media and class in the media and takes a huge amount of shit for it.

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 16:43 (six years ago)

Speaking of racism:

Deeply glad Strictly rehabilitated this ghoul in the public eye.

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:03 (six years ago)

has anyone in the UK press cottoned on to the fact that the top brass in the SNP are now in open warfare about the gender recognition act ?

― ||||||||, Thursday, July 4, 2019 5:14 AM (four hours ago)

has been covered a bit in the telegraph, spectator had a piece about the heroism of joan mcalpine's brave transphobia in the face of the "scottish political establishment", saw something about it in the new statesmen etc. i just think any sort of scottish political drama that isn't about the union or doesn't cause the snp a huge electoral backlash is hardly going to set the heather alight in the rUK press

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:08 (six years ago)

(xp) The woman who was anti-Semitic about the leader of her own party. What a character.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:09 (six years ago)

xp. obviously if you're a centrist fucking snp politico and you're a transphobe you should go fuck yourself off the scott monument post haste

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:10 (six years ago)

The problem with this issue is most of the press is like, “lol, fuck the Nats” and also “lol, fuck trans people”, so there’s no side for them to take.

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:17 (six years ago)

yeah i think you've hit the nail on the head.

sadly the division in the SNP leadership reflects the division in opinion in scottish society.

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:19 (six years ago)

Just read an article in a prestigious Romanian journal that caters to the (right-wing, by default) intellectual caste about how 'sexo-Marxism' is slowly but surely overtaking Europe and how we must do everything within our power to resist its tyrannical ascension. Do you not see that the situation in Scotland is but a microscopic piece of a greater civilisational puzzle? We must stop sexo-Marxism!

pomenitul, Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:26 (six years ago)

striking chink in their usually steadfast message discipline but

||||||||, Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:28 (six years ago)

gyac OTM re OJ - probably the only person to (or at least try to) call out O'Neil on his own show re Spectator cvntery so still gets some points

there was an albertan tory who was railing against the NDP's "sex marxism" recently. great minds think alike

might try and create an ndp sex marxist caucus

I'd be down for that! As soon as I move back to Montreal.

pomenitul, Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:39 (six years ago)

I've never quite been able to work out why, in the midst of raging transphobia from the supposed liberal-left media in this country, the Conservative Party seems so broadly unfussed about trans rights? Most of their MPs didn't bother to vote against it and almost as many voted in favour of it as voted against.

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 July 2019 19:43 (six years ago)

some of them probably more venal than outright evil

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 4 July 2019 19:56 (six years ago)

I mean, this only holds if you consider the Times a liberal/left paper and the Times has led on that agenda more than any other part of the media. I mean, what else do they pay Janice Turner for?

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:38 (six years ago)

Sadly, Janice Turner will be in post and be given carte blanche to write any old shite as long as her husband is Executive Editor (he is Peter Preston’s son)

suzy, Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:44 (six years ago)

the guardian had an editorial concern trolling for transphobia and saying neither side is wrong in the debate between trans people and terfs over the gender recognition act, lest we forget

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:54 (six years ago)

Not denying that about the Guardian (or the NS) but the Times is the paper of record and it’s running scare stories about trans people on the front page.

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 20:58 (six years ago)

I don’t think this was posted? Love love love Pidcock.

"Are you bored, Nick?" The BBC's Nick Robinson @bbcnickrobinson has his arse handed to him on a plate - by @LauraPidcockMP. 👏👏👏 #r4today pic.twitter.com/PDmMSTfIOg

gyac, Thursday, 4 July 2019 22:34 (six years ago)

yeah posted something about that at the time. she's really excellent. "arse handed on a plate" is probably a bit strong - but she didn't brook no bullshit distraction speak from him and reminded him why she was there.

nice that MI5 got tom harwood the call up to QT as a treat for his aman smear

God, I know. Horrible ghoul.

At least we still have Jonny L.

It’s time to legalise cannabis. Supporters in UK outnumber opponents 3:2, in London 3:1. Stop criminalising young people! Disclosure: I was arrested for possession at 19 but now I prefer to self-medicate with alcohol in moderation (usually) & hate skunk https://t.co/WlJ4jK8SIK

Amused to see the gutter press trying it on with Tommy Corbyn’s National Hemp Service a few months back, to no avail (tbf to the gutter press, they generally prefer Class A’s).

suzy, Friday, 5 July 2019 08:08 (six years ago)

the jen williams piece on oldham has been getting a bit of attention and is worth a look if anyone hasn't seen it yet. it's pretty broad but one little stat that stood out - Arrears at the borough’s social landlord, First Choice, have risen by nearly £500,000 since Universal Credit came in.

ogmor, Friday, 5 July 2019 10:09 (six years ago)

What has Owen Jones said or done that is bad?

I think if you look at all the people in the media, here or anywhere, he must be in the best 1% of it.

I don't like everything he says but I strongly consider him to be on my side and am glad he is out there campaigning, one way or another, every day.

ya narcissism of small differences mostly about OJ, he is, taking the broader view, a good thing

Aston "Family Court" Barrett (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 5 July 2019 22:33 (six years ago)

let us never criticize him again

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:15 (six years ago)

I am most impressed with the way he quietly gets on with his campaigning in a calm manner as he usually does..

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:22 (six years ago)

he is certainly above criticism, and should never be discussed for being sucked into stupid talking points that undermine the Labour leadership

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:26 (six years ago)

big up that traffic warden though, the one that slapped a ticket on the Yack Yack bus outside court. and did it such brio and gaiety as to upset his squad of raggedyarsed beta football hooligans. And then he says "I love this job!".

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:30 (six years ago)

never had a car and hate 'em, so I've never vilified traffic wardens the way most ppl seem to.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 09:35 (six years ago)

people who hate traffic wardens are dicks

E.P. Thompson on the “European values” and faux internationalism of Tom Watson and his ilk: pic.twitter.com/LLxv1Itowr

— Paul O'Connell (@pmpoc) July 6, 2019

beautiful little E.P. Thompson quote here on the bullshit internationalism of the EU much celebrated by the blue face clowns. Also this morning was listening to the farming program and the agricultural sector is finding it harder to attract enough workers from eastern Europe because of exchange rates on sterling getting less favourable. So to fill this gap they are going to have to start recruiting from further afield. They have been giving 6 month temp visas to workers from Latvia/Belarus, but only 2500 so far.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 11:21 (six years ago)

If they manage to completely tank sterling brits will have to start picking their own crops again.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 11:22 (six years ago)

Rare bit of Brexit humour (because most of the traders voted out and most customers voted in) at the farmer’s market today: veg farmer/dad joke specialist asked about lettuces, says ‘well, you can have leaf or you can have Romaine’.

suzy, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

I love a lettuce joke. "a group of rich nations feeding each other goodies" isn't much of an indictment of The European Project - the food is one of the best bits

ogmor, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:42 (six years ago)

I don't think E P Thompson meant it like that, but farmers being able to grow crops that otherwise would be a loss maker thanks to EU subsidiaries is a good thing.

calzino, Saturday, 6 July 2019 13:53 (six years ago)

That's why brexity farmers are a strange bunch really.
