I quite enjoyed the book! It's just nice to read something so positive for a change, even if (especially?) it is a bit silly.

In other words, more loopy utopias, please.

Leaghaidh am brón an t-anam bochd (dowd), Friday, 28 June 2019 14:19 (seven years ago)

nowt wrong with playing with train sets and making helicopter noises and all that, but presenting it as thoughtful ideas for humanity's future is a fucking joke!

calzino, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:26 (seven years ago)

Loopy utopias are good in the abstract but i get the sense that FALC + the idea that if you fix capitalism, you fix the environment (the dopey thing being circulated about 100 companies being responsible for 73% of emissions, etc) works only as a release valve for any sense of personal responsibility or impetus to change.

ShariVari, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:26 (seven years ago)

lol the horse manure crisis was not averted by the automobile but by the streetcar

it's not a "myth" to look at current trends and extrapolate to make a point!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 28 June 2019 14:27 (seven years ago)

but doesn't the reviewer state that there was no "horse manure crisis" ?

calzino, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:31 (seven years ago)

aka the horse manure opportunity

mark s, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:33 (seven years ago)

Mark - the book you quote from is called Literature and Revolution

xyzzzz__, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:34 (seven years ago)

Mao used to say Nature Is Our Enemy!

calzino, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:39 (seven years ago)

What FALC reminds me of is Geezaesthetics = group of ppl in a pub talking and then years later it's written up.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:44 (seven years ago)

trotsky: dialectical
mao: less so
geezaesthetics = good not bad except for the name

mark s, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:45 (seven years ago)

xps to Tracer

i think i misread your post, apologies.

calzino, Friday, 28 June 2019 14:50 (seven years ago)

Bizarre at this stage.

Williamson re-suspended pending investigation into Vaz’ concerns about the disciplinary panel he was part of.

ShariVari, Friday, 28 June 2019 17:12 (seven years ago)

Hopefully Vaz will pay for this.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 28 June 2019 17:18 (seven years ago)

I think there is close to zero chance of Vaz paying for anything in the short to medium term and that this is probably a ploy to pin the blame on Elmi, but we shall see.

ShariVari, Friday, 28 June 2019 17:22 (seven years ago)

Lol Vaz doesn't pay for anything. More popular amongst his constituents than ever, got his biggest majority last time around, despite the drugs and the rent boys.

I am just hearing that @cineworld cinemas appear to have decided not to show the new Robert the Bruce film.
Cineworld, could you please confirm and explain your reasons for this decision?

what's extraordinary is that the media has spent the past two years going on about how labour has been overrun by a cult when this has been happening to the party of government unbeknownst them seemingly right under their nose

||||||||, Saturday, 29 June 2019 10:33 (seven years ago)

From that same article - seems like she can’t forget Boris

I shared a cab with him when he was campaigning to be mayor of London and suddenly found myself fantasising about cosying up to him on the back seat. I didn’t. He was a complete gentleman. But there was something about him that made me like him more than I was planning to. I could totally see us screaming at each other late into the night, spilling wine on the sofa, neighbours banging on the door.

Has clearly been involved with more than one woman = morally dubious
No, what I find baffling and disturbing is the allure of the other potential PM, the one whose private life we never talk about, the one to whom feminists give a completely free pass. Why does he get away with it?

Jeremy Corbyn has been married three times, divorced twice, and there’s the racy matter of that fling with Diane Abbott. His latest wife, Laura Alvarez, is a Mexican businesswoman he met when she flew to Britain while her older sister Marcela was receiving support from Corbyn in a custody battle.

Can’t believe she’s making out like he paid £1m for that kip
She then came to live in his £1 million house in Finsbury Park with their cat El Gato.

Feel like the people camped out on his doorstep 24/7 might though?
No late-night screaming matches that we know of, but then he lives among his people. The London lefties wouldn’t report Corbyn.

Lol
According to investigative author Tom Bower in his biography Dangerous Hero:

Que?!
At last year’s Labour party conference he paid tribute to her from the podium in Spanish: ‘Tu eres mi fuerza y mi apoyo,’ he said, which translates as ‘you are my strength and my support’.

That’s sweet, but it is hardly cutting-edge feminism. I’m just saying, we expect Tory leaders to pay tribute to the little lady when she’s actually a businesswoman in her own right, but the great bearded Marxist?

...Karl?

It’s probably because of his policies for women, love. No great fucking mystery!

Article very much in the Will This Do category.

former Ukip MP Douglas Carswell said: “I’d rather have my country run by democratically elected Jeremy Corbyn than the smug, self-regarding, incompetent Whitehall officials that briefed this to the Times,” adding: “Get these vile Sir Humphry’s out!”

woke carswell, welcome to the #resistance

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 29 June 2019 13:52 (seven years ago)

Boris Johnson is a fucking stalker, though - one of my posh friends told me she witnessed him casually turning up at the flat of her posh Tory journalist friend uninvited, in pursuit of a hookup, while she was over at the flat. Then he would turn up at the pub she was in with invited friends, after having taken pains not to invite him (or talk about the plans). My friend who was there said he frightened her because she thinks he’s empty inside and something important is missing from his psyche.

The stalked woman is now married to another prominent socially-awkward Brexit mastermind - this happened around 10 years ago.

suzy, Saturday, 29 June 2019 13:52 (seven years ago)

Not sure we need inside stories to surmise that "something important is missing from his psyche"...

Zelda Zonk, Saturday, 29 June 2019 14:24 (seven years ago)

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Saturday, 29 June 2019 14:48 (seven years ago)

Oh fab, a story wPC.

My friend had to deal with him on multiple occasions; none of us have. Am I wrong to feel minimised after telling a group about a man exhibiting stalker behaviour?
