southerner: no it's not.

It's 6C where I am right now. 11 in the day? The US is way too over ac'd. I used to only use it in the NYC summer above 30 (depending on humidity) for my dog.

Yerac, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 23:46 (six years ago)

Overused in cars too. Perfectly comfortable day and 95% of cars will have their windows all rolled up so I assume AC is going.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 23:54 (six years ago)

My old apt complex, mgmt had to put up warnings because people used to blow out the AC units because they were setting them to like 68F when it was 100+ outside.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 23:55 (six years ago)

hey everyone, it's been unseasonably cool in Chicago the past few weeks, so i'm going to have to balance everything in this thread vs the relative coolness here and say that temperatures are unpredictable

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 23:56 (six years ago)

I frequently drive with the windows up but with outside air blowing (no A/C) for the quiet and not messing up my hair (such as it is).

nickn, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 23:56 (six years ago)

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere once that using air conditioning is in many cases pretty much equivalent to having the windows down as far energy consumption goes due to additional wind resistance caused by the windows being open. I guess this really only applies when driving at high speeds though.

I should look this up I guess but it's late and I should have already been sleeping for a while now.

One way to cope with heat: lose a shitload of weight. I lost 75 pounds and found myself curled up on the couch in 84 degree heat with just a fan on + blanket. I've definitely noticed the difference in heat tolerance since I've gotten bonier.

War in I Rock (I M Losted), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 06:43 (six years ago)

Congrats on the pound lossage!

I do have to mention, as the King of Bones, I still got hot af sometimes. Last night was a sweaty mess

French people have thoughts about air conditioning

We've talked about Italians and their cold neck thing before ("colpa d'ari"). French people are not so far off. AC is obviously a bad thing for the environment, and people shouldn't live places where it's so hot that you want (~~~need~~~) it, or drive cars at speeds where it's needed. American life is fucked up. But as a (recovering) American, I found the article I linked hilarious. Here's the quote that made me lol the most:

"Ideally [to avoid thermal shock], it is necessary to keep a difference of 8°C between the exterior temperature and the temperature inside where you are. Thus, if it is 40°C (104F) outside, think to keep your air conditioning no lower than 32°C (90F)." I cannot imagine keeping the AC at 90F.

oh wow -- thanks! I've noticed in the last year that exposure to powerful central A/C will affect me in ways it didn't used to in tropical Miami; at work it feels so damn cold that my fingertips go numb.

recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:17 (six years ago)

so my fuckface landlord will not replace my 30-40-yo AC for free. A room AC on the floor? Cheap?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:19 (six years ago)

I notice a huge difference in how well I deal with temperatures based on 25lbs up or down.

In an empty office we always talk about how you can always tell where the women sit because they have blankets, shawls, sweaters over the backs of their chairs. So cold.

Yerac, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:20 (six years ago)

Besides, you're fucking crazy if you think anyone can survive 35+ degree (C) temperatures without air conditioning.

This is confusing surviving with living perfectly comfortably 24/7/365. People lived in hot climates for thousands of years before AC...it's just a silly thing to say people can't survive in that heat w/o it.

I always think that if there is another civil war in the US, a lot of the white supremacists will be flushed out early if you just take away their ac.

Never forget this classic French video from 1975, which recommends drinking 1.5 litres of beer a day to fend off the dog days:

pplains, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:11 (six years ago)

that is correct, Yerac. The super asked me if I had one to replace it, and no I don't.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:12 (six years ago)

Ugh, I feel like the floor units are either crappy or super expensive. I was just looking up nyc laws about landlords and ac. I know they don't have to provide it, but it's unclear what to do if they were already providing it.

here is the official French advice on staying cool. AC not part of the picture obv

- close your shutters during the day (duh)
- use a fan
- keep your body wet (not sure about the practicality of this one tbh)

I've managed to cut my hedges whilst barely breaking sweat. It's 20C here, 60% humidity and with a cool breeze, there isn't really going to be a heatwave here other than it might hit 30C on saturday. It pisses me off tbh, because all the nice places I go to gtf away from humanity is full of fucking ppl when it is warm - even just moderately warm is good enough for these fairweather arseholes. Who don't seem to give a shit about appreciating nature when it is pissing it down or cold!

Glad to see so many of y'all are ok with tens of thousands of people dying every year because of excessive heat (and the number's only going to get worse with each passing year). Also, just because your body's capable of handling excessive heat (and 35C IS excessive) doesn't mean everyone's is, and the elderly, children, and those in compromised health are the most vulnerable from the heat. But I guess fuck them all because you have such a fucking hard-on for being primitive jackasses, fucking hell.

This is confusing surviving with living perfectly comfortably 24/7/365. People lived in hot climates for thousands of years before AC...it's just a silly thing to say people can't survive in that heat w/o it.

This is completely ignorant of (a.)the history of human development and (b.) the way climate has changed over time. Also, AC has helped reduced the death rate in many places.

I always think that if there is another civil war in the US, a lot of the white supremacists will be flushed out early if you just take away their ac.

The fact that you think all people living in hot climates = "white supremacists" shows just how INCREDIBLY ignorant and hateful YOU are. I cannot believe you would even think something so fucking inane.

Dee the (Summer-Hating) Lurker (deethelurker), Saturday, 29 June 2019 21:48 (six years ago)

Also, I feel like you all need to watch this latest List25 video because some points in it are SUPER appropriate:

Dee the (Summer-Hating) Lurker (deethelurker), Saturday, 29 June 2019 22:07 (six years ago)

it's true that only since the advent of AC have entire regions of countries been filled with buildings that simply aren't workable without it. office doors used to have transoms on them. they don't anymore. "shutters" existed. indoor shopping malls didn't. etc.

it won't be simple or quick to replace or modify all these buildings so that they can work without AC. but it has to be a goal surely? (meanwhile dee can you dial it back a little? lordy)

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 29 June 2019 23:40 (six years ago)

I wasted approximately 3 minutes on my life on that vid then gave up. That was some lazy pseudo intellectual apologia for cherry picked but still legitimate criticisms of America from what I saw. "America spies on you? No, YOU spy on you!" And so on...
