late pass, should i assume i should try this?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:08 (six years ago)

if you enjoy anguish and/or giant robots, yes

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:16 (six years ago)

if you like anime it is one of my top 3 of all time but if you have an aversion to the genre it's definitely an anime

Mordy, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:25 (six years ago)

it's super post-modern anime on top of that. but definitely one of the greatest.

Nhex, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:41 (six years ago)

oh no, i love anime! It's just been many years since I tried something new; this came out maybe two or three years after I stopped watching actively.
anguish and giant robots ahoy i suppose

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:49 (six years ago)

i have three episodes to go and i just read a random tweet about elon musk which i think might have spoiled a major plot point :O

The Pingularity (ledge), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 10:07 (six years ago)

Mordy, what are the other two in your top three?

wondering what other things fans of this rate highly. I pretty much stopped with anime after seeing this, apart from the odd Ghibli.

maffew12, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:35 (six years ago)

maffew definitely give serial experiments lain a shot

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:41 (six years ago)

haha wow.. seen that. Hadn't crossed my mind in ages. Same era isn't it?

maffew12, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:43 (six years ago)

it premiered two years after eva but yes, it is the other major mindfuck anime of the era. holds up really well and got a lot of things right about the internet and the development of computer technology

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:45 (six years ago)

Right on, I'll pop it on again sometime.

btw not necessarily looking for a similar vibe to Eva. Just interested what else might get recommended here on a non-anime forum. Stop me if it's too off topic.

My other big one has been Orange Road. I'll stick it on basically for the music sometimes. I remember people loving the music in Cowboy Bebop but it never grabbed me.

maffew12, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:48 (six years ago)

if you haven't seen it, haibane renmei is a great midpoint between like... lain and miyazaki. lain's character designer wrote it iirc

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:59 (six years ago)

also anyone who loves this show will have the best time watching flcl

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:04 (six years ago)

Haven't seen either. Thanks!

Looking forward to watching Eva on Netflix sometime. I don't actually remember a lot of the plot ^^

maffew12, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:08 (six years ago)

haibane renmei is the best, the sin dialogue is something i still chew on

lowercase (eric), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:23 (six years ago)

Lain & Haibane along with Mushishi are my 3 fav anime series, but then they were among the first shows I watched so I'm willing to accept that I have a "first love" sort of bias with them

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

i have no illusions that it ranks up there with Evangelion in themes or animation.... but man would it be fun to rewatch Escaflowne someday. giant robot high-fantasy adventure crossed with teen girl "which of these two guys??" serial drama.

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:48 (six years ago)

i was gonna mention escaflowne. it’s not subversive like eva but it pretty much perfects its own extremely romantic giant mecha aesthetic

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:01 (six years ago)

would also appeal very much to fans of e.g. Final Fantasy VI... steampunk mecha in a fantasy world kind of deal, with a very Kefka-esque villain. pretty sure there is also an airship at some point.

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:08 (six years ago)

there is!

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:57 (six years ago)

i sorta said top 3 flippantly so now i'm on the spot but probably Legends of the Galactic Heroes and Space Dandy (or maybe Cowboy Bebop) sorry for my conventional picks <bows apologetically a million times>

Mordy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:06 (six years ago)

now that I know there's something called Space Dandy, I have to check it out

maffew12, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:33 (six years ago)

Space Dandy is underrated brilliance

clouds, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:42 (six years ago)

watching FLCL was like the formative media experience of my teen years

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:44 (six years ago)

Escaflowne definitely one of my favorites from that era. Yoko Kanno music. Not that subversive or ground breaking, just wonderful genre work.

Lain and FLCL up there as greats as well, second the recs

Nhex, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 15:44 (six years ago)

ahem

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 17:43 (six years ago)

remember this being amazing for the first seven eps or so but haven't watched it in like twenty years so maybe give this a try?

er, that's The Hakkenden, searchable on ytube as Hakkenden (Pioneer Dub)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 17:45 (six years ago)

I really should try to finish FLCL, weirdly I only ever watched it while I was sick.

As for EVA, I feel like there's a bit of a lull starting around ep 16, but holy smokes at the end of ep 19!!

Shoegazi (Leee), Thursday, 27 June 2019 17:25 (six years ago)

all my friends are watching this now and asking me questions about where it's heading/what to expect and it's a lot of fun to lie to them

Simon H., Thursday, 27 June 2019 21:33 (six years ago)

Is Shinji screaming the new TETSUUUUOOOOO?

GRETA GABBO (Leee), Friday, 28 June 2019 23:39 (six years ago)

Just finished the series. Is there a consensus on the last two episodes, i.e. missed opportunities that are rectified with End of Evangelion (which I'm still to watch)?

GRETA GABBO (Leee), Sunday, 30 June 2019 02:03 (six years ago)

there is no consensus on anything iirc

Simon H., Sunday, 30 June 2019 02:14 (six years ago)

should i not watch this on netflix if possible? or is that just nerd shit i won’t care about? i think i torrented it a few years ago and have it somewhere on my hd

flopson, Sunday, 30 June 2019 02:24 (six years ago)

Torrents are the most authentic source of anime short of fansubs on VHS ripped from a laserdisc source

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Sunday, 30 June 2019 02:41 (six years ago)

Watch it on Netflix it’s great

Mordy, Sunday, 30 June 2019 02:56 (six years ago)

Yes.

Simon H., Sunday, 30 June 2019 03:51 (six years ago)

Ok cool thx

flopson, Sunday, 30 June 2019 06:39 (six years ago)

the last two episodes and end of evangelion happen concurrently. that's all there is to know

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 30 June 2019 06:46 (six years ago)

Discussing this with new first time viewers has been a total joy. No one ever successfully anticipates just how far down/in it ends up going.

Simon H., Sunday, 30 June 2019 07:16 (six years ago)

What the hell did I just watch, I mean, WHAT HAPPENED TO PEN PEN.

GRETA GABBO (Leee), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:08 (six years ago)

joined with the universal mind as well (i hope)

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:10 (six years ago)

The relaunch of this has sent me down an Anime rabbit hole. I watched 'Belladonna of Sadness' for the first time this weekend and I'm still reeling.

I would be so down with an Anime poll on this borad.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 23:15 (six years ago)

anime features were uh featured on the animated features and shorts poll I started and Leee finished for me a few years back; I think it'd be fun to do a sequel for all serialized animation

Animated Creatures: ILX's top 100 animated films (results thread)

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 23:38 (six years ago)

really looking back, anime features probably suffered badly from the size of the turnout

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 23:43 (six years ago)

a sequel for all serialized animation

Would love this.

Garbo Pond (Leee), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 23:57 (six years ago)

ditto

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 00:02 (six years ago)

Had no idea Silby, thanks! (got my search keywords wrong)

Think we could do with a sequel tbh

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 00:02 (six years ago)

maybe this was discussed upthread but just put end of eva on - they changed that line :|

devvvine, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 16:14 (six years ago)

the last one?! :o
