I hesitated in putting Greenwald there as he is more complicated and not a hack like Trackey. I feel like he's just drifted a bit towards what Tracey does. I shouldn't have put them in the same category
― anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:54 (six years ago)
The new stories on Brazil were really good, but Greenwald is fucking awful and would at this point put Tracey in the same group as himself, so clearly we should do the same. Awful, awful hacks.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 10:24 (six years ago)
Some of the stuff rs says with a seemingly strait face is obviously indefensible and just kind of dumb, like how can they miss the point this completely? but other times I find them quite interesting and funny. being critical of some aspects of identity politics from a Marxist perspective doesn’t make them or nagle socially conservative.
― dsb, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 12:09 (six years ago)
way more going on in that nagle thread than "criticism of identity politics from a marxist perspective," which sounds like horseshit to me
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 12:47 (six years ago)
then again i've found most recent leftist criticism of identity politics to be, at its core, anti-pc concern trolling, pretty sure everyone brought up itt recently has a real hard-on for hating political correctness
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 12:54 (six years ago)
there's nothing Marxist or "dialectical" about the Nagle quote that was making the rounds about capitalism and cultural conservatism. It was roundly mocked and deserved to be.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 13:07 (six years ago)
asserting the primacy of class over other identities is the age-old left-wing social conservative line

Xxp No ones claiming that though, obviously the left like the right contains a coalition of different groups with their own variously conflicting or complimentary agendas. Intersectionality and solidarity are absolutely worthy ideals but shit like that recent vanity fair Bernie article or criticisms of Ilhan Omar for supposed anti semitism make it clear to me that identity politics are often used cynically, as a cudgel against the left by liberals and the right.Cultural conservatism would imply to me being pro life, anti gay, antifeminist and reactionary on a whole host of other issues that we are dealing with in America none of which they are.
― dsb, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:00 (six years ago)
Red Scare also pro-Israel from a "you know, different ethnic groups just have cultural differences!" pov, doesn't get much more socially conservative than that.

ableism is culturally conservative

i like cumtown bc its just completely owns up to its own stupidity/immaturity; it's like early-00s teen culture, 95% of the cultural references are to movies that came out when i was 11. but the combo of that style of humour with earnest political opinions in chapo or red scare makes me cringe
― flopson, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:53 (six years ago)
Blaming Chapo for Red Scare is like blaming Dave Chappelle for Mind of Mencia
― space invaders are smokin penises!!!! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:56 (six years ago)
i think chapo were innovative on the 'its ok to say retard in a leftist podcast' front and can be blamed for that, but red scare def innovated into new grounds of 'its ok to just actually be right wing on a leftist podcast'
― flopson, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:13 (six years ago)
and also CTH cleaned up their act in that respect a while ago
― Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:30 (six years ago)
... have any of the Chapos said retard?
For all the "white socialist bros who hate idpol" stereotypes that characterization applies mostly to Amber and a little to Matt. Will/Felix/Virgil aren't really in that camp at all.
― Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:31 (six years ago)
The language and jokes were, uh, quite a bit looser in the earlier run of episodes for sure.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:36 (six years ago)
racist version of retard is preferable to dirtbags

― shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:36 (six years ago)
lol Red Scare are absolutely anti-feminist but in the same way as Khachiyan's idol Paglia where they mix in a few reasonable criticisms of modern liberalism with a whole lot of reactionary nonsense. like their current bit is "Louis CK did nothing wrong!"
and Nagle is quoted in that twitter thread as wanting the left to be more socially conservative and praising Sargon of Akkad, her politics are basically Strasserite
there are absolutely valid criticisms of the way the liberals cynically use identity politics as a weapon against the left but this isn't the criticism that most anti-idpol 'leftist' types focus on, Brad is otm about those just being anti-PC concern trolling.
― ufo, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:28 (six years ago)

not gonna lie I laughed at the Beltway Garage song, I felt like I had heard 80% of the episode before though.
― JoeStork, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:44 (six years ago)
xp I mean, I don't follow her and the times I've peeked at her full stream of tweets have been painful, but some drive-by gawking at things that have been retweeted is entertaining in a "wow, why would you do that" way
― mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:45 (six years ago)
the thing her tweeting reminds me most of was the time I was going to this talk where one of the panel speakers was a guy who had translated Deleuze & Guattari works to english and I was scared he'd talk like that and I'd have to spend too much time trying to parse his words
then he showed up and was like "hey guys nice to be here on the panel!" and spoke like a normal person
twitter is conversational and people who act like it's not are nuts

No I don't... who are most people and what do they find objectionable about RS? fat-shaming? saying retard? being a tradwife? I thought I pulled some good examples. calling fear of a climate apocalypse "bourgeois eschatology" has gotta be up there. I mean as usual it just seems like a lot of people (not necessarily itt) are either jealous or annoyed that something they don't like is becoming popular. and like I said, they're not surrounded by a cult like Peterson or Hannity. so.... what's the damage? they are easy to ignore.
the praxis girl video is v funny

Their doubling down on defending sex offenders and creeps and dismissing/belittling people’s concerns about them as “neoliberal hysteria” or whatever. That’s the truly heinous shit IMO
― Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 01:57 (six years ago)
Not sure of the exact sequence of events but the gist is that a female comedian was voicing her objections on Twitter about Louis CK playing at a festival on and the RS gals and their reply army chimed in with their idiocy and etc etc etc

― flopson, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 06:18 (six years ago)
She was, though a large part of that is probably that she posted so infrequently. She has become a parodic blend of Paglia and Nassim Taleb.
xp, it wasn’t just defending CK, she was going through the whole schtick about neoliberal feminism demanding safe spaces, etc, to a comedian who’d complained about being sexually harassed in the past and who objected to clubs booking known sex pests. Get over it! Comedy clubs aren’t a real workplace!
You can’t judge a podcast by its listeners but there were huge numbers of people (comparatively, for a show with under 3000 Patreon patrons) jumping in to attack the comedian as unattractive, hysterical, etc.
― ShariVari, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 06:36 (six years ago)
Yes, but when that army isn't attacking you it's easy to ignore.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 07:53 (six years ago)
Marianne Williamson comes off as an interesting, well-spoken but not really convincing figure in that interview. I'm glad they did it cause she's genuinely unique, but I'd be surprised if they kept talking about her all that much in the future. They're not wrong to say she's one of a small number of candidates presenting a vision for change, but her actual pitch doesn't support much scrutiny.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 26 June 2019 08:01 (six years ago)
That said, I'm kinda glad they shunned Gravel but went for her instead
