What irritates me about RS isn’t so much their edgelordery as it is their self-importance. They want to be Lady Cumtown but at least Cumtown doesn’t pretend to be anything but a dumb joke podcast. RS occasionally seems to flirt with believing they’re saying something of substance. Of course if anyone tries to criticize what they say they fall back on “get a life, it’s just jokes”. They’re so tedious.

from what I've gathered Red Scare is the contrarian "whooo, look at how leftists make everything into an overblown issue, sometimes I just want traditional whatever, being retrograde is fine and entertaining"
which might be novel or even edgy if you're in your early 20s but it's basically the shtick I've seen a half dozen times in my lifetime and eventually nearly every one of these people acting like they're the counter-culture to what they feel are woke norms end up turning into gavin mcinnes or pulling off their masks to reveal they always were
― mh, Monday, 24 June 2019 19:10 (four years ago) link
I mean, the current wave of socially conscious activism has people genuinely affecting change and doing hard work to build lasting effects and those who are on a bandwagon, but overall the progress we're seeing needs a lot more of the former to actually stick. Getting real societal change when it comes to entrenched misogyny, class consciousness, etc. isn't something where you've "solved" it and someone waves a big victory flag
it's cool to joke on your peers in passing about that kind of thing, but doing so as a media exercise makes me wonder how many of these people are also the "come on, you don't have it THAT bad" libertarian types

xp I feel like her book snuck out in the crossover period where people hadn't yet realized that all of the original people from zero books (the publisher) had left and they were on the verge of just releasing a mixed bag of increasingly questionable junk

Angle Nagle says "SJW feminists" have a "strange sexual politics" because they believe consent is crucial to prevent sexual harassment, assault and rape. Have you seen Wobble Palace? She's great in it, and it's a very good movie - trailers make it look misleadingly bad.
How much of the podcast have any of you listened to? Up to the listener to decide whether or not the sincere points they make are warmed over Paglia or not. I think they make a clear distinction when they're being contrarian and sarcastic ("going to the Wing made me want to detonate the vest") and when they're sincere (concern about the climate apocalypse being a "bourgeois eschatology" or Tim Faust's gauche "Abortion Rules!" t-shirt). I understand why people don't like the show, but what's to be bothered about? They wouldn't have a growing audience if they weren't speaking to some disaffected and stifled segment of the left, which remains largely humorless and rigid. Frankly I've been shocked how many of my hard left friends have recently become massive RS fans, ranging in age from 20 to 50. These are not libertarians. And none of them agree with everything D&A say. I don't think that Anna professing the joy of housework or defending Zizek stymies social progress, and to suggest that people aren't discerning enough to tell when they're kidding, being hyperbolic, or serious... I don't think that gives their audience enough credit at all, which again, has really expanded recently and shows no signs of slowing down.

Based on your characterization of their serious opinions... they suck regardless so I'm not sure the ability to differentiate 'just jokes bro' and not is important.

red scare is very entertaining imho. very funny to hear women in their late 20s early 30s making a living off podcasting shifting from talking about doing coke at verso loft party to how they want to be tradwives and we need the patriarchy back. loved the recent episode where they went to the zoo. their takes seem to deal with and are directed at a very narrow segment of the brooklyn media left or liberal actresses that post on twitter a lot, completely disconnected from reality, and are absurd and should be taken as seriously as their takes on astrology or climate change.

so by the overlap i’m getting that red scare is where the young presumably left-isht howard stern fans are
― mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 00:30 (four years ago) link
they have a lot of fans in the UK & Canada. I'm in Baltimore, and again, the diversity of people I know that have recently become fans is striking - from lifelong communists to committed young lefties to disengaged but reliable progressives. These are not gullible converts about to turn into McInnes or Peterson. Also, unlike JP, Red Scare is not surrounded by a toxic cult. I'd be concerned if people were modeling their lives after D&A like they do with JP and any of the IDW idiots, but they're not. Dasha talking about the joys of fainting in public or Anna going on and on about how hot the Boston Bomber is, no one is taking this as life advice, and they're not turning anyone over to the right wing. So if you think they suck, just don't listen to the show... something like Pod Save America or The Young Turks nauseates me, but they're not hard to avoid. it's not like when Howard was on terrestrial, or O&A for that matter, and they were inescapable, just in the air constantly.
The Zoo is my favorite episode of the show.

red scare are socially conservative reactionaries, their whole schtick is basically being contrarian to "trigger the sjws" (as those on the right say) except masquerading as leftist somehow. theyre very ridiculous people whose idiotic twitter antics are entertaining but only in a "enjoyable to see them get dunked on" way and i dont know how anyone could tolerate actually listening to their podcast. also worrying that "'leftist' except i think it's a real problem i'm not allowed to call someone a retarded faggot anymore" is enough of a thing to get them the sort of following they have
