Jeremy Corbyn asks Theresa May: "What would be worse: crashing out with no deal in October, or putting this issue back to the people for a final say?"

bUt LaBouR's aNtIsEmItiSM

Nearly half of Conservative party members would prefer not to have a Muslim prime minister, a survey into the scale of Islamophobia in the party has suggested.

The poll, carried out by YouGov for the anti-racism group Hope Not Hate, also found that more than two-thirds of Tory members believe the myth that parts of the UK are under Sharia law, and 45% think some areas are not safe for non-Muslims.

Half of the party’s members think that Islamophobia is a big issue, but only 8% believe it is a problem within the party, the survey found.

Calm, good-natured country, posting as it always does.

Britain used to be a moderate, good-natured, and fundamentally calm country, which celebrated its practical judgment and resistance to utopianism. Three years of culture war have basically driven it insane https://t.co/bE7AcqMWDT

It seems that Labour have decided today is the day to start the process for trigger ballots... MPs being asked to confirm if they intend to stand again, with a deadline of July 8.

NEW: Chief Whip Julian Smith establishes a three line whip for the week of the 22nd July, as a vote of no confidence is anticipated from Labour.

big beautiful wario (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 24 June 2019 17:11 (seven years ago)

labour doing a bit too I see

Labour are furious about the lack of coverage of this by BBC and others today. Labour source: "You'd think it would be all over the news. No wonder Tories are in denial about racism in their party, they're getting a free pass from most of the UK media..." https://t.co/IxjHmb2bJR

— Adam Bienkov (@AdamBienkov) June 24, 2019

||||||||, Monday, 24 June 2019 17:19 (seven years ago)

"Labour source" might get more coverage if they went on the record. I mean probably not, it's the BBC, but give it a try eh?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:43 (seven years ago)

hmmm labour source gets enough traction from laura K and crew when she’s carping about the PLP meeting every week

||||||||, Monday, 24 June 2019 18:49 (seven years ago)

caek makes a good point, why aren't they calling them on this in an on the record statement? I know it's bad form to call out racism now but still.

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Monday, 24 June 2019 19:00 (seven years ago)

Got to have deniability in case racism makes a comeback

dunty declared Dr Liam Fox "one of the adults in the room" yesterday. he is beyond a joke.

"Things have deteriorated so far that Liam Fox is now one of the adults" was the line, in fairness.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 24 June 2019 19:16 (seven years ago)

it's still nonsense tho

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2019 19:19 (seven years ago)

i can't wait till they get so desperate for adults that grayling becomes one for saying something mildly disapproving about boris.

calzino, Monday, 24 June 2019 20:55 (seven years ago)

Bernard Jenkin on Newsnight, on no deal: "It's up to them. We'll collect millions in new tariffs if we go out with no deal. We'll be quids in. We'll be cashing in, not crashing out. The economy will grow faster in the first year after no deal."

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 24 June 2019 21:58 (seven years ago)

The lack of basic economics education in our ‘leaders’ is alarming’. Where the fuck does he think the money for tarrifs on, for example, cheap danish bacon comes from?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 24 June 2019 22:02 (seven years ago)

big beautiful wario (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 24 June 2019 22:03 (seven years ago)

I don't know how Bernard Jenkin qualifies as a leader but point taken. Nice campaign video for Boris by Laura Kuenssberg this evening.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Monday, 24 June 2019 22:25 (seven years ago)

Am I wrong in thinking this tactic of politicians bullying interviewers by raising their voices, talking over them and refusing to pause and listen is relatively new?

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Monday, 24 June 2019 22:27 (seven years ago)

I'm sure it's always happened but it seems to be something Tory politicians are increasingly doing these days - especially with female interviewers.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Monday, 24 June 2019 22:29 (seven years ago)

i dunno

found it noteworthy how comfortable yr presenters were in behaving in exactly this manner when i had to watch the nightly brexit coverage tbh

godfellaz (darraghmac), Monday, 24 June 2019 22:47 (seven years ago)

That interview with Laura Kuenssberg was breathtaking in its vacuity. There was absolutely nothing in what Johnson was saying that could possibly fly with the EU. "We can deal with the Irish border after we exit, in the implementation period that we won't have, because the EU won't sign a deal that doesn't include provisions for the Irish border" It's like he's just flown into the country and had a quick glance at the local papers or something.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:10 (seven years ago)

But in a weird way I think I'm cheering him on. He's so unprepared he's going to destroy the Tories.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:16 (seven years ago)

His cut-outs have been hopeless in engaging with the media he has been avoiding, too.

Liz Truss was on tv over the weekend and was pressed on the fact that there wouldn’t be an implementation period if there was no deal to implement - her response was ‘well, the EU would say that, wouldn’t they?’.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:47 (seven years ago)

Whats happening with this? I've not really been following it? Is he looking for an out? I've got a sinking feeling Gove is somehow going to end up PM

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:52 (seven years ago)

I don't think Johnson has a coherent thought in his head, which means we're heading for chaos that will make the May years look like a picture of order, and will probably end in some sort of emergency government or something. If he does have a coherent thought, he must have realised that a deal by Oct 31 is an utter impossibility and therefore no deal is his only option, given that he's painted himself into a corner on leaving by then. That will require an election, a populist turn and an agreement with Farage not to split the brexit vote.

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:59 (seven years ago)

lol, only a week or so ago there was some nonsense in the Graun about how people were shocked at how well organised and disciplined the boris campaign machine was, just because they were successfully hiding the prick away. The fact that they are confident to send Liz Truss out to talk for him confirms they have not a clue what they are doing.

calzino, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:55 (seven years ago)

His stans are all fucking idiots, so what are they to do?

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:57 (seven years ago)

scottish labour have increasingly been talking about nationalising private schools and incorporating them into the NES. hope UK labour makes this policy

||||||||, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:38 (seven years ago)

I found it to be a useful addendum to that excellent piece about the reigning Tory elite's Oxford years in the late 80s. Oligomeritocracy (so to speak) does indeed appear to be an even bigger problem in the UK than it is in France or the US, where it's already a fucking blight.
