pfft i actually recommend getting through the first half as quickly as possible

i mean i love those episodes (barring "a human work" which is good character-building for misato but kinda obviously the least good episode in every other way) but the show is special for the shift halfway through

some of those translations sound wack. otoh I wonder if OG fans whine too much. everyone who's like "no Fly Me To The Moon? it's ruined!!" like...calm down, we live in a society

I'm now honestly wondering if Netflix standards and practices deliberately toned down the adultness of that specific dialogue when they noticed how young the characters were supposed to be

cf. there were a lot of sailor moon fans who wanted the early ‘90s dic dub preserved when viz started the massive rerelease/retranslation/redubbing a few years ago and this is basically an unreasonable position

tbc "Fly Me to the Moon" is critical + one of the best parts of the show

Maybe I'll queue up the Youtube ending compilation in another window and flip to it at the end of each episode, like a normal person.

i do think it kinda sucks that “fly me to the moon” isn’t there. i hope the netflix deal portends a domestic blu-ray release

there's no official explanation from netflix but as i said upthread: probably too expensive

streaming companies tend to not pony up cash for song rights; for instance, shudder pretty much never pays for any song joe bob wants to sing during his horror marathons and he spends a lot of the show complaining about it

song rights are notoriously expensive and hard to acquire just for physical releases (cf. daria or any mtv show that incorporated contemporary popular music), i imagine licensing for streaming is even worse and probably resembles font rights in ebooks, i.e. it is something you must pay for continuously. however i am not an expert

first domestic translation to retain “third children” instead of converting it to “third child”

other than that, it’s not horribly written, just gonna try to enjoy the ride instead of thinking about how *i* would’ve done it

It maybe could have generated some goodwill if they'd made some sort of documentary or companion to help guide new/perplexed viewers or help explain why it's seen as such A Big Deal

I will say the actual dub performances seem fine, a couple dodgy pronunciations aside. I'd forgotten about all the great moments of stillness (eg the end of ep 4)

i read a ranking of the series recently that put episode 4 toward the bottom and episode 26 dead last. gonna draw a line in the sand here and say that person doesn't deserve eva

Are the English subtitles not perfectly synched up for anyone else? I'm on episode 2 and the subs seem to be about 1-2 seconds delayed.

i think i'll watch this again - brad i thought i posted a lot about this when i first watcvhed it but maybe i only discussed it w/ you. anyway what i was left with years later as the most impressive bit was how well it captured the kind of syntax of longing + emptiness/void + the sacred mystery (the desire to see beyond the veil) that characterizes my lived experience almost all the time.

(not to keep derailing but the anno-leaving-kare kano thing seems false, e.g. the cut-out section stewart-ahn mentions starts ep19 which is after all the rumored leaving-points)

yeah i had never heard of that before, and i always thought that kare kano, for how much it completely falls apart in the last six or so episodes, is way more anno-esque at the end than at the beginning

(i've read the entire manga and the first half of the show is a very loyal translation)

(if it's true that masami tsuda complained about the show being too different in tone from the manga... she was wrong lol)

(but then again maybe anno had different plans that we never got to see, bc part of the issue with the ending of kare kano is that they had obviously caught up with the still-in-progress manga)

isn't the manga considered secondary/alternate? I don't think Anno was looking to translate it to the screen.

the eva manga is indeed secondary to the anime, and it also diverts dramatically from it. not sure it’s a necessary read
