"seele, the seat of the soul" yeah i'm gonna have issues with this translation

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 12:50 (six years ago)

Not a big anime head, but I may try this out. Unfortunately, I'm already annoyed by randos on Twitter who are like "DO NOT BINGE WATCH THIS! You must savor it like a fine wine!"

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 21 June 2019 13:23 (six years ago)

pfft i actually recommend getting through the first half as quickly as possible

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

i mean i love those episodes (barring "a human work" which is good character-building for misato but kinda obviously the least good episode in every other way) but the show is special for the shift halfway through

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 13:33 (six years ago)

some of those translations sound wack. otoh I wonder if OG fans whine too much. everyone who's like "no Fly Me To The Moon? it's ruined!!" like...calm down, we live in a society

Simon H., Friday, 21 June 2019 13:35 (six years ago)

eva fans (and western anime fans in general) have been professional whiners since the ‘90s

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 14:02 (six years ago)

I'm now honestly wondering if Netflix standards and practices deliberately toned down the adultness of that specific dialogue when they noticed how young the characters were supposed to be

Simon H., Friday, 21 June 2019 14:03 (six years ago)

cf. there were a lot of sailor moon fans who wanted the early ‘90s dic dub preserved when viz started the massive rerelease/retranslation/redubbing a few years ago and this is basically an unreasonable position

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 14:04 (six years ago)

tbc "Fly Me to the Moon" is critical + one of the best parts of the show

Mordy, Friday, 21 June 2019 14:22 (six years ago)

Maybe I'll queue up the Youtube ending compilation in another window and flip to it at the end of each episode, like a normal person.

jmm, Friday, 21 June 2019 14:30 (six years ago)

i do think it kinda sucks that “fly me to the moon” isn’t there. i hope the netflix deal portends a domestic blu-ray release

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 14:49 (six years ago)

Why isn’t FMTTM the credits song

flappy bird, Friday, 21 June 2019 15:00 (six years ago)

there's no official explanation from netflix but as i said upthread: probably too expensive

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 15:01 (six years ago)

streaming companies tend to not pony up cash for song rights; for instance, shudder pretty much never pays for any song joe bob wants to sing during his horror marathons and he spends a lot of the show complaining about it

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 15:03 (six years ago)

song rights are notoriously expensive and hard to acquire just for physical releases (cf. daria or any mtv show that incorporated contemporary popular music), i imagine licensing for streaming is even worse and probably resembles font rights in ebooks, i.e. it is something you must pay for continuously. however i am not an expert

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 15:08 (six years ago)

(and am possibly full of shit)

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 15:09 (six years ago)

I actually thought fly me to the moon was written for the show 🥴 gd

flappy bird, Friday, 21 June 2019 15:12 (six years ago)

lmao ok i honestly love that you thought that

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 15:14 (six years ago)

haha right

flappy bird, Friday, 21 June 2019 15:15 (six years ago)

same :D

i have a refutation for this but it’s a huge spoiler and now that people are newly watching this i... don’t want to do that

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 15:53 (six years ago)

first domestic translation to retain “third children” instead of converting it to “third child”

other than that, it’s not horribly written, just gonna try to enjoy the ride instead of thinking about how *i* would’ve done it

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 16:07 (six years ago)

i have a refutation for this but it’s a huge spoiler and now that people are newly watching this i... don’t want to do that

yeah I know what this means. disregard my speculation.

Simon H., Friday, 21 June 2019 16:11 (six years ago)

I've never seen this show and I'm pretty stoked to watch it

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 June 2019 17:17 (six years ago)

Netflix has released KARE KANO and fans are screaming!!!

happy #watchkarekano day

lowercase (eric), Friday, 21 June 2019 17:28 (six years ago)

somehow, shamefully, i’ve never seen this and just watched the first four episodes

it fucking rules

turn me on and press my teabag (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 21 June 2019 17:32 (six years ago)

YES IT DOES

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 17:38 (six years ago)

and it only gets better from there

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 17:38 (six years ago)

very excited for end of evangelion to ruin the lives of people who've never seen it before

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 17:58 (six years ago)

hell yeah!!

It maybe could have generated some goodwill if they'd made some sort of documentary or companion to help guide new/perplexed viewers or help explain why it's seen as such A Big Deal

I will say the actual dub performances seem fine, a couple dodgy pronunciations aside. I'd forgotten about all the great moments of stillness (eg the end of ep 4)

Simon H., Friday, 21 June 2019 21:35 (six years ago)

i read a ranking of the series recently that put episode 4 toward the bottom and episode 26 dead last. gonna draw a line in the sand here and say that person doesn't deserve eva

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 21:53 (six years ago)

Are the English subtitles not perfectly synched up for anyone else? I'm on episode 2 and the subs seem to be about 1-2 seconds delayed.

jmm, Friday, 21 June 2019 22:09 (six years ago)

syncing is fine for me

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 21 June 2019 22:16 (six years ago)

I'm even looking forward to the discourse cycle a little

i think i'll watch this again - brad i thought i posted a lot about this when i first watcvhed it but maybe i only discussed it w/ you. anyway what i was left with years later as the most impressive bit was how well it captured the kind of syntax of longing + emptiness/void + the sacred mystery (the desire to see beyond the veil) that characterizes my lived experience almost all the time.

Mordy, Friday, 21 June 2019 22:57 (six years ago)

that is a great description of it mordy

Rebuild 4 has been delayed specifically so Anno can screencap all our tweets

up to ep 7, anxious to see more tbh

also anxious to see how all the qabalah imagery pays off

turn me on and press my teabag (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 22 June 2019 08:29 (six years ago)

pretty soon you'll just be anxious

maffew12, Saturday, 22 June 2019 09:46 (six years ago)

hallelujah

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 13:19 (six years ago)

this piece is AWESOME but also lousy with spoilers, reader beware https://www.polygon.com/2019/6/19/18683634/neon-genesis-evangelion-hideaki-anno-depression-shinji-anime-characters-movies

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 14:37 (six years ago)

(not to keep derailing but the anno-leaving-kare kano thing seems false, e.g. the cut-out section stewart-ahn mentions starts ep19 which is after all the rumored leaving-points)

lowercase (eric), Saturday, 22 June 2019 14:57 (six years ago)

yeah i had never heard of that before, and i always thought that kare kano, for how much it completely falls apart in the last six or so episodes, is way more anno-esque at the end than at the beginning

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 14:59 (six years ago)

(i've read the entire manga and the first half of the show is a very loyal translation)

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:00 (six years ago)

(if it's true that masami tsuda complained about the show being too different in tone from the manga... she was wrong lol)

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:03 (six years ago)

(but then again maybe anno had different plans that we never got to see, bc part of the issue with the ending of kare kano is that they had obviously caught up with the still-in-progress manga)

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:05 (six years ago)

isn't the manga considered secondary/alternate? I don't think Anno was looking to translate it to the screen.

But this is my first Eva talk in around 20 years

maffew12, Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:35 (six years ago)

all of those posts are about kare kano

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:27 (six years ago)

the eva manga is indeed secondary to the anime, and it also diverts dramatically from it. not sure it’s a necessary read

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:28 (six years ago)
