Ramesh Ponnuru on PalinPosted by: FeddieThursday, October 2, 2008 at 09:21PM0 CommentsAs many of y'all know, National Review Online is down right now. Well, my good friend Ramesh Ponnuru and I have been emailing one another throughout the debate, and I asked him if I could post his thoughts on Governor Palin's performance during the vice-presidential debate tonight. He graciously agreed, so here they are:
Any conservative who was white-knuckled going into this is relaxing by now. There were some points where she was a bit more platitudinous than one would ideally want, but overall--she's cleaning up. Biden is sighing more as the night goes on, and I can see why.I could not agree more. Well done, Governor Palin! You did us proud.

10.30 pm. Biden's sobriety and authority and call for fundamental change is both reasonable and solid. It will resonate, I think. As you can read, I began this debate feeling that she was steam-rolling him. She was. But it was a steam-roller coming at you on fumes, not real fuel. She doesn't have it. Maybe one day she might. But not now. Biden's peroration was very, very strong. There is no contest here. There was only one loser: Gewn Ifill. She was intimidated, peripheral, neutered. The rules didn't help. But Ifill put in a dreadful performance.
Palin's had a big day, I think she deserves ice cream.

i thought palin did well on this. didnt seem nervous or unprepared to me, and now I'm wondering if talking to a big group, several feet away from the nearest other person is more her style than one-on-one interviews. also, my gut feeling is she helped her ticket more than Biden helped his -- not that Biden hurt his ticket, but he did seem more like a "democratic politician" where palin seemed like a "passionate conservative". small difference, but one that imo gave her a slight edge tonight overall.
and before I am skewed and/or shunned, I will note I thought close to the opposite about the obama/mccain debate!
