I noticed the scoreline thanks to Ned's tweets at 8-0. I was leaving my desk for a work function and in the time it took me to walk from my desk to the function, they had scored two goals.

omg FIFA don't want it to be ten. It will still be ten
I imagine FIFA will be eyeing viewing figures nervously after this.

for all you fancying australia before this tournament, they needed a 91st minute goal to draw with thailand in the recent asia cup
― imago, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:46 (four years ago) link
and even then only won on penalties
― imago, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:47 (four years ago) link
seeing players go wild over scoring rout-number goals against obviously inferior opposition is weird but I feel like that's a matter of unspoken etiquette rather than anything more innate, and that you could make an only partway contrarian case for the polite smile and handshake to mark your ninth against minnows being the more arrogant gesture
― Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 22:18 (four years ago) link
Yeaahhhhh, I think that's more than partway contrarian tbh.

i liked the old italian football thing of when you were 5 up or so just totally taking the foot of the gas and having an uncompetitive snooze fest for the remainder of the game
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 22:44 (four years ago) link
I'm sympathetic to the argument that that you best respect opponents by always competing your hardest, but even i thought the us celebrations were verging on the sociopathic
― Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 23:53 (four years ago) link
Iirc that italian football thing traditionally kicks in at 1-0 up
Commentator just said that the ref for this Nigeria vs South Korea game actually played for Russia in a previous world cup which is p cool.
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 13:04 (four years ago) link
Quite the own goal from Korea there. Shame because they'd started well.
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link
xp North Korean ref for Cameroon v Canada did likewise
― Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link
Bizarre own goal there.
― ShariVari, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:12 (four years ago) link
Totally crazy.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link
Incredibly soft pen.
― ShariVari, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:28 (four years ago) link
Who'd have thought it?
― John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link
hoofing someone in the knee at full pelt has traditionally been frowned upon iirc ime. granted Norway would have got away with it sans VAR

Delphine Cascarino snubbing the Irish to come on as sub for France
― Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link
Yeah, that's more clearly a penalty than the second Spanish one which was a similar offence.
― Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link
Sucks, but we put up a decent fight and should beat SK to advance
― abcfsk, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:54 (four years ago) link
Engen flicked the ball and caught the French player’s thigh as she jumped in. It wasn’t particularly dangerous play, it wasn’t deliberate and she seems to have got the ball. idk
― ShariVari, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link
is there supposed to be provision made for when a leg follows through after a clearance and connects w/ an opponent? feel like there isn't really but not dredging up any obvious comparable incidents rn
lot of ppl taking about a two-footed tackle by Torrent in the same incident, seemed like more of a block to me. still think a penalty is correct w/ the caveat of it being a bad advert for VAR all the same insofar as it reaffirms how many grey areas there are and always will be
― Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 21:11 (four years ago) link
How did france look? Unlucky but figured it out? Evenly matched?
― alomar lines, Thursday, 13 June 2019 03:18 (four years ago) link
thought france looked p good. norway did cause the odd problem on the flanks, i don't think the french full backs are particularly strong, but their CB pairing is great, not just renard but the #19 as well. diani had a spectacular first half down the right. not sure of the permeations of the draw but they looked solid last 4 prospects, although i didn't see either brasil's or england's opening games. wasn't that convinced by gauvin at CF but she did score.
didn't think the pen was soft.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 13:57 (four years ago) link
australia done more in the first ten mins here than they did in entire game vs italy
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link
var on a possible pen but thought there was a hanball in the build up to the incident
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:22 (four years ago) link
no pen
now that's what i would rate as a 'soft' penalty. marta scores.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link
Fun half, aussies in dire straits but now there’s hope
― abcfsk, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:52 (four years ago) link
Equaliser, but both these teams look p ropey imo
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 17:20 (four years ago) link
Crazy match. In a good way!
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 June 2019 17:39 (four years ago) link

Offside given about 20 seconds after Scotland player (2 yards onside) receives the ball. Japan go down the other end and ping it straight over the keeper’s head into the net, 1-0 Japan
― Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link
Japan are far better and deserve the lead but yeah it was a total nonsense
― imago, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:29 (four years ago) link
Scotland keeper is very bad?
― Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:31 (four years ago) link
The game plan seems to be long floated diagonals which the lone striker has no chance of reaching, combined with not clearing the ball properly.

didn't see their game vs england but scotland look total trash
― oscar bravo, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:38 (four years ago) link
they were trash against england tbh, england should have been 4 up
― imago, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:39 (four years ago) link
Instead they needed a dodgy penalty to win, innit.
― John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Friday, 14 June 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link
Wondergoal for Scotland 4 mins after should have been given a penalty for what was basically a Henry vs Ireland level handball in the current climate
― Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 14:46 (four years ago) link
2-1, Scotland simultaneously shite and hard done by
― Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 14:50 (four years ago) link
Well that's an improvement on the men's team - shite and not hard done by.

for some reference for those not from scotland: i am 34 years old, attended school in scotland, went to a high school with 1500 pupils, the amount of girls/women my age or older i've known to play football is 1
