Jeremy Corbyn raised his voice at Wes Streeting, told him to be quiet after he brought up the EHRC investigation

Just highlighting that one

Further down the thread it says he told him to let him finish, which is less interesting.

You can only scream at a child for so long.

this review of aaron bastani's fully automated luxury communism makes it sound even more absurd than expected

Was reading this earlier today - its sorta interesting how much of this "faith in technology" is there across an awful lot of thinking on the left - bearing very little fruit. No doubt there has to be some role to technology (partly because its a thing we do, we'll invariably come up with a way of decomposing plastic and more efficient ways to desalinate water), but there's just so much guff about (I was aware of Inventing the Future as well but it sort of went under the radar, maybe because Srnicek comes across reasonably on twitter, good to see the author just lumping it all in).

xyzzzz__, Monday, 10 June 2019 21:14 (seven years ago)

this review made BBB’s book sound alright. I’m skeptical mind
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/may/29/fully-automated-luxury-communism-aaron-bastani-review

same reviewer in 2012:

But having read it, I can safely say that Britannia Unchained has a brevity, pace and scope that elevates it a little above the usual pre-party-conference polemics.

calzino, Monday, 10 June 2019 21:18 (seven years ago)

is there that much techno-optimism on the left, broadly speaking? generally I see a lot more effort spent on suspicion towards technocrats than the wide-eyed approach to the possibilities of technology taken apparently taken by Bastani

I see it come up often enough. I guess FALC came up as a thing because consumption in some way 'won' so dialing the whole thing down, actively shutting down the stuff that is burning the planet to a crisp is seen as too much moralising. FALC is harmless enough at the moment, but it will need some serious talking down to, otherwise "Green New Deal" is just Paris Accord Mark II.

I see Tom Gann is writing a book and I expect it to have none of it and to take in a lot of the far left critique of Labour (whilst being active in the Labour Party, to keep those plates spinning).

xyzzzz__, Monday, 10 June 2019 21:39 (seven years ago)

I guess I mostly see FALC used as a kinda-jokey slogan and not as a genuine political program. I think most people who throw it around assume that an uninterrupted future of thoughtless consumption is not really feasible. But this is just my guess.

Simon H., Monday, 10 June 2019 21:47 (seven years ago)

Its kinda jokey in its expression but behind it there's a lot that seems like a cover for "ok after austerity is rolled back and we screw landlords all well and good, now how do we fix this other stuff hmm"

Reading Andy Beckett's review makes me think that it needed better jokes (reading the Gravel teens piece yesterday confirmed that the US left have better jokes by miles)

xyzzzz__, Monday, 10 June 2019 21:58 (seven years ago)

I'd be interested in hearing any further reports of that meeting - if Corbyn saying "please don't criticise staff" is really all he said about Prescott and Willsman, that's pretty appalling.

Interesting/more substantial report on regional funding from a group called Communities in Charge suggesting a plan for the govt's proposed post-Brexit 'Shared Prosperity Fund', which is supposed to make up for lost EU funding to regions. Summary here full report here

This is supposed to be administered largely by combined authorities and LEPs (with the suggested addition of citizens panels) and 'community-led partnerships' (not local authorities). All of this highlights the long-running constitutional crisis around regional government in the country which is massively complicating everything

This is good

Labour has tabled a cross-party motion for tomorrow that would hand control of the parliamentary agenda on Tues 25 June to prevent a future Prime Minister proroguing Parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit against the will of Parliament. pic.twitter.com/oG4URZok9C

It is so obvious that the UK needs a party/alliance in which Rory Stewart, Jo Swinson, Mike Gapes, Luciana Berger, Jess Phillips, Dominic Grieve, old Uncle Keir Starmer and all can make an appeal to the voters. The need for it is yelling at us, desperately.

With Tories calling for "Proroguing" (suspending) Parliament to force thru Brexit, a reminder they got the idea from an ex-Tory SpAd who is so right wing he thought David Cameron was promoting the “cultural Marxist agenda of the Frankfurt School” https://t.co/ekfFHYMIfF pic.twitter.com/zCb2MO1N77

— Solomon Hughes (@SolHughesWriter) June 11, 2019

the former special adviser guy Gerald Warner, who gave JRM the "Proroguing" of parliament idea is so far to the bizarre end of the right wing spectrum, like P Hitch he thinks Cameron was a lefty Blairite cultural marxist and all dat stuff!

he's Going Home in a fucking ambulanceas a very ambulant mp who's never going to be pm!

tomorrow’s vote ought to pass – it requires just three Conservative rebels to defeat the government, and the number of MPs who have consistently rebelled to prevent a no-deal Brexit is significantly larger than that.

Keunssberg reckons that bill isn't a slam dunk. S Bush reckons it has a good chance + there will be severe pressure from Labour whips on MPs that have spoken about opposing it and if it passes it could be the first step to an early election.

calzino, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 07:43 (seven years ago)

The previous attempt at this (the Cooper bill) only passed by 1 vote, so it'll probably be at best close.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 07:46 (seven years ago)

We all know what happens now. That poll will be correct for about two months after Johnson becomes PM - conveniently coinciding with the summer recess. Riding high on a wave of euphoria and bad Labour headlines, Johnson calls an election at the Tory Party conference, which they promptly lose.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 08:02 (seven years ago)

handing the sticky bag to Labour with ~1 month to figure out a new Brexit. it could almost work out for them

If you count on the same people to vote the same way and don’t count on Labour whips to arrange for some of the refuseniks to abstain instead, then Labour have an extra vote in Newport West now.

Outgoing UK diplomat slams ‘chaotic politics’ and Brexit ‘shambles’

Wightman also likened the damage to Britain's reputation in the last three years to the battle known as the Fall of Singapore in 1942.

"It transformed their view of British imperialism," he added. "Things were never the same again. The last three years have done the same for Singaporeans’ view of contemporary Britain. The nation they admired for stability, common sense, tolerance and realism grounded in fact, they see beset by division, obsessed with ideology, careless of the truth, its leaders apparently determined to keep on digging.

Johnson says the economy is achieving Grand Prix speeds without firing on all cylinders.

He says it is important to unite the country. Parts of the UK feel left behind. We need better infrastructure. Spain has much better hi-speed broadband. Leeds has no metro rail. This is madness, he says.

Lol, christ this fucking guy. There's an awful inevitability to all this though isn't there?
