I love to see these polling, especially The Heiresses

Touch Me Not (Pintile, 2018)
Elephant Sitting Still (Hu Bo, 2018)
The Heiresses (Marcelo Martinessi, 2017)

Madeline's Madeline is even worse than i'd feared. Cinematic diverticulitis.

as far as films about a youngster's pov, got much more out of nervous translation

devvvine, Sunday, 9 June 2019 18:02 (seven years ago)

I like the rivette I’ve seen so I guess I’m just not that put off by annoying theatre troupes. The “gaps” are part of the film’s impact for me, there was a v deliberate strategy with the direction I felt (which involved putting a lot of trust in the performers, and I liked how the film dramatised the risk involved in this w the director character); as I said above I was a bit wary that it would be 90 minutes of cat/sea turtle but I had a rare emotional response to this movie!

(film critic after watching a movie that features some neon lighting)
this movie is absolutely nuts, like an acid trip slathered in meth, a delirious dive off the edge, a kaleidoscopic extravaganza that must be experienced to be believed, a phantasmagoric descent into the void

— Nick Usen (@nickusen) May 19, 2019

btw I am not a film critic obv but this^ is totally me and I will be voting accordingly

are we going to do a best movies of the decade poll this time next year?

I should send in my ballot, I considered checking out Zama but was put off by a friend's description, "it's a secret horror movie," pass

Both will definitely be in my top ten, perhaps top five.

Frederik B, Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:31 (seven years ago)

lol xp

Have you seen any other Martel? Zama is way up there for me, you should def check it out. I mean people can randomly call almost anything a secret horror movie

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:33 (seven years ago)

Zama's top-5 for me, a black comedy with a bleak punchline.

WmC, Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:35 (seven years ago)

"secret horror movie" isn't a real thing, like if there's a zombie or a dracula or a ghost or whatever in the movie it's never a surprise tbqh

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:38 (seven years ago)

and yeah Zama's good, gratitude @ my friend who got me to go see it with him

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:39 (seven years ago)

some ppl were like "Phantom Thread is a horror movie" which is obviously wrong, it is a rom com

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:39 (seven years ago)

Zama is a neon lit.. it's a very very fine movie.

lol, first thing I think of from that tweet is p badshaw's 5 star review of gaspar noe's enter the void or some other git on that awful dross holy motors. but then i guiltily think of my own clownish hyperbolic bullshit that i've conveniently wiped from my memory over all sorts of other noisy dross over the years!

calzino, Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:43 (seven years ago)

That tweet is so me it’s kind of a miracle I don’t like refn bollox much more than I do tbh

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 19:57 (seven years ago)

reminded me of the 90 minutes i spent waiting for mandy to end

devvvine, Sunday, 9 June 2019 20:01 (seven years ago)

My number one will shock you

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 20:03 (seven years ago)

My number one won't, lol

It's a secret horror movie! Danger lurks anywhere on the football court, and only one man is brave enough to change the rules.

Frederik B, Sunday, 9 June 2019 20:11 (seven years ago)

see zama dude, it's great

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 9 June 2019 20:28 (seven years ago)

Ok I’ve been swayed, I will check it out. I haven’t seen any other Martel but have heard great things about La Cineaga in particular.

flappy bird, Sunday, 9 June 2019 20:31 (seven years ago)

I don't think it's great, but it's certainly worth consideration

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 17 June 2019 21:36 (seven years ago)

devvvine, Monday, 17 June 2019 21:38 (seven years ago)

All done :) Its up there.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 17 June 2019 21:41 (seven years ago)

but i'm busy tonight

you can write-in vote for a dream you have, but only between #30 and #35

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 17 June 2019 21:42 (seven years ago)

Yeah, Dead Souls is a must. As is La Flor.

Frederik B, Monday, 17 June 2019 21:46 (seven years ago)

Feel free to skip last year's Lav Diaz, though.

Frederik B, Monday, 17 June 2019 21:46 (seven years ago)

neither been released in the US as yet, so stay in your ivory theater

xp

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 June 2019 21:47 (seven years ago)

you're at your most Dar-RILL in these poll threads, aintcha?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 17 June 2019 21:48 (seven years ago)

xp yeah, La Flor opens in the US this August and Dead Souls only had a limited showing at NY Anthology FIlm Archives last December as far as I know

Dan S, Monday, 17 June 2019 22:13 (seven years ago)

the hardest part of organizing a ballot for me will be the 'new-to-you' older films from prior years, I watched so many classic films for the first time in 2018

Dan S, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 00:22 (six years ago)

Sent!

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 01:46 (six years ago)

I do make that older films list in January bcz it's self-limiting

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 June 2019 01:54 (six years ago)

limiting my new-to-you list to actual cinema screenings to narrow it down a little

devvvine, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 12:03 (six years ago)

I did the same thing

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 15:40 (six years ago)

any roma talk really did just disappear as soon as award season ended, only remembered it existed when i was trying to work out where the pic at the top was from

devvvine, Wednesday, 19 June 2019 12:40 (six years ago)

It did. And I'm fine with that.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 June 2019 12:50 (six years ago)

ballot sent

I am curious (george) (slight return) (WmC), Wednesday, 19 June 2019 13:09 (six years ago)

i voted!

. (Michael B), Wednesday, 19 June 2019 13:10 (six years ago)

will watch what some have called "the most impressive directorial debut by an actor since Night of The Hunter" before i vote

devvvine, Wednesday, 19 June 2019 13:23 (six years ago)

Oh god, that blurb. I'd settle for the "least embarrassing directorial debut by an actor since Lady Bird." Maybe.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 June 2019 13:30 (six years ago)

lol what’s that for, eighth grade?

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Wednesday, 19 June 2019 14:03 (six years ago)

not gonna even ask if that was for Jonah Hill

we need til Monday

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 June 2019 14:03 (six years ago)
