I'd argue it's politically impossible to deliver that right now though, but then all courses of action feel politically impossible right now.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 June 2019 10:47 (four years ago) link

I'd missed the controversy around the Labour candidate and how stupid can these people be to just keep clicking Like on things without reading properly? She's either an antisemite or an idiot and neither is particularly edifying.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 June 2019 10:49 (four years ago) link

Couple things..

Union activist Lisa Forbes retained the constituency for Labour, taking 31% of the vote and beating the Brexit Party's Mike Greene (29%) by 683 votes.

◾Turnout was 48.4%, down from 67.5% in the 2017 general election, when Labour beat the Tories by 607 votes

So, turnout was lower, and the Labour candidate won with a slightly increased majority?

Also, how many voters thought they were voting for Mike Brexite of the Green party?

Mark G, Friday, 7 June 2019 10:52 (four years ago) link

I don't want to do a Deems here but funny how sub-50% turnout is less of an issue when it delivers the result you want.

Westminster vs European, innit.

The latter I would say, unedifying social media likes are I think one of those things where it’s easy to share and like something clearly dodge without thinking too much about it. She has also expressed regret and said she’ll go for training with the JLM. Hopefully she will be Naz Shah & not Chris Williamson.

Also xps to Suzy but that is a good thread about Streeting

gyac, Friday, 7 June 2019 11:15 (four years ago) link

Funny how brexit party spokesperson sounds ever so slightly bitter that the tory campaign was strong and their votes held up well.

Yeah, I mean, I've been guilty of smashing that like button on a giant text post because the first few paragraphs seem right-on or whatever. Not doing that is certainly something that should go into pol-on-social-media 101 by now tho.

Tories benefited from not having a leader - they were able to present a variety of positions to different groups.

Absolutely spot on and bl**dy brilliant!! Cold War Steve wins the internet for today!

"I've not worked to such a specific brief before," explains Spencer, "my work is usually pretty free-flowing - but for this one I had to bear in mind the primary audience is not British and they're not going to know who Sam Allardyce is or some minor actors on Coronation Street.

"I think in one of the early drafts I put a sleeping Alan Brazil on the back of the bus and they circled it and said 'who is this?'.

kind of sad to find out the Time cover is a genuine Coldwarsteve and not just someone biting his style, I like(ed) his twitter account, it's been declining for a while but this is a new low -he must realize that omitting the minor coronation st actors etc negates what made his pictures good in t he first place - some of the earlier ones were kind of eerie in a Guy Peellaert Rock Dreams kind of way, it's degenerated into something akin to this guy whose work was always in the economist:

https://www.economist.com/sites/default/files/images/print-edition/20131207_BRD000_1.jpg

can't really blame coldwar steve though, god knows that if I had a novelty twitter account that became unexpectedly popular I was sell out as quickly as possible.

soref, Friday, 7 June 2019 15:00 (four years ago) link

was there a specific ilx thread about that particular aesthtic of stuff like coldwar steve, sleaford mods, the guys who do the drunken bakers strip in Viz?

soref, Friday, 7 June 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

(not the real england thread)

soref, Friday, 7 June 2019 15:03 (four years ago) link

yes there was, can't remember the title for the life of me though.

calzino, Friday, 7 June 2019 15:06 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't include Viz in the genre of Bloody Omnishambles satirical wank (but I wld include HIGNFY, cassetteboy & banksy), which I think mostly has a theme of southerners* waxing on about britishness as if speaking for & abt the whole country with the characteristic special mix of self-awareness and obliviousness. sleaford mods are a cross between this and something actually good/the fall

*& sometimes posh scots who are ofc basically the same the next worst thing

ogmor, Friday, 7 June 2019 15:14 (four years ago) link

The meme which will have been kept alive was that thread, not in its inception but that’s what it became

If I become Prime Minister I will introduce National Citizen Service - universal - for every young person. Purpose. Character. Coming together across the United Kingdom. pic.twitter.com/rSxxSxnCgr

— Rory Stewart (@RoryStewartUK) June 7, 2019

this incredibly characteristic idea reminds me again of the the uncharitable but totally accurate description in that new yorker piece of stewartism as "the vigorous and manly pursuit of the not too much". abolishing private school is a bit of an ask but how about a month practicing rubbing shoulders with the hoi polloi to help ppl feel a little less self-consciously posh?

I raised it in the Real England thread but it didn't go anywhere that I noticed

There's a Real England adjacent thing (that is def not real England itself)… the middle-aged sad/angry left/liberal white male aesthetic of now - Cold War Steve/Sleaford Mods/Drunken Bakers maybe three coordinates (must be more?). I'm pretty sympathetic to all of it but fuck the fandoms are annoying.

i could get with bringing back national service, as long as it only applies to all the posh bastards who have conspired to make this country more unequal and a more hateful place through their own fucking inherent evil and greedy self interest.

calzino, Friday, 7 June 2019 15:59 (four years ago) link

Missed this atrocious take earlier

If Farage had ever been elected to parliament he would have been neutered because he would have had to do some actual work, or he would have never been working in the constituency or parliament and been shown up as a shit MP.

— Jess Phillips (@jessphillips) June 6, 2019

Sorry for the eons old links but I’ve been in a thing all day

One reason Labour are quiet on anti-Semitism is because it plays strongly in the Asian Muslim vote, just like they wouldn't be critical of the grooming perpetrators. It's all about votes. These are facts.

— Simon Danczuk (@SimonDanczuk) June 7, 2019

This cunt totally infuriates me - this is incredibly racist & as though someone who was suspended from the party for sexting a 17 year old has any, ANY grounds to moralise whatsofuckingever!
