“If you're an elected representative, one of the biggest parts of your job is to scrutinise, understand, examine public spending figures, public finances,” Ball says. “And if you've got a politician lying, about that, they're doing the opposite of what we need them to do.”

I don't know much about law but wouldn't it be fair to say a test case for prosecuting a pol for lying out of their arse is completely naive and doomed for obv reasons?

There will be a review of @campbellclaret being expelled from the Labour Party, shadow attorney general Shami Chakrabarti tells #r4today. "Merely voting for another party is not grounds for expulsion" https://t.co/ZjduCUaWHD pic.twitter.com/ul0BUKLP0l

— BBC Radio 4 Today (@BBCr4today) May 30, 2019

Hope lab don't back down on this

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 30 May 2019 08:15 (seven years ago)

I heard this yesterday and the idea that as long as he didn't declare he was voting for LibDems during polling hours, then it doesn't do harm to the party is stretching credibility somewhat. ffs the cunt is undermining the party every day before they got him bang to rights any way... hopefully Campbell's just a stubborn turd that needs a 2nd flush!

almost tempted to start a crowdfunder to take down Arron Banks, then do a midnight flit to Latvia with the dosh.. that'd show Pom as well!

calzino, Thursday, 30 May 2019 08:21 (seven years ago)

time for john mcdonnell to state plainly what we're all thinking: 'we ejected him because he's a cunt, end of'

My favourite John McD response was when he was asked about Ian Austin quitting the party and he was like “yeah supposedly”, like clearly not a single fuck given.

gyac, Thursday, 30 May 2019 09:10 (seven years ago)

John McDonnell tells us he believes Ian Austin has left the Labour party. No one at Austin’s office is picking up the phone to tell us otherwise.

Also triple posting as per, but can we sneer at Ianucci getting all outraged about us when Malcolm Tucker has an excellent go at Glenn for joining the Lib Dems in TTOI?!

calzino, Thursday, 30 May 2019 12:02 (seven years ago)

My old man died a few days before the euref. Like Jo Cox, his death was not the fault of any campaigners on either side. Yet we did not have a campaign pause to commemorate his death, but we did have for hers. I think that was wrong.

His dad probably died after too much sherry and masturbation, not murdered by a far right extremist, so maybe Lolico talking shit again.

Lilico is a genuinely mad cunt, but whyyyyy the fuck can he not leave Jo Cox’s murder alone, he’s desperate to deny any political relevance whatsoever.

Let’s remember his golden age:

eg Suppose we had a community on a spaceship with very limited resources, no means to imprison someone & a death cultist repeatedly tried to release all the oxygen, killing everyone & proved successful in persuading others to do the same. Eventually death might be the only option

If this tweet is true and his dad died way back when then who the fuck did I murder around the time of the euref

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Thursday, 30 May 2019 18:51 (seven years ago)

tbf he said his biological dad died at 9 and his stepdad who he just called his dad was the EU ref one

gyac, Thursday, 30 May 2019 18:55 (seven years ago)

Right, I was thinking it must be his husband then.

lol didn't have a campaign pause for Jo Cox either really as the leave campaign didn't respect it

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 30 May 2019 19:29 (seven years ago)

So for the cucks who ran the remain campaign it's like: 'oh, a prominent remain supporter has been murdered by a fascist... let us immediately cease campaigning for a spell and leave the field clear for the people who are privately pleased by her murder'

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 30 May 2019 19:33 (seven years ago)

Or the majority of remain campaigners were upset and horrified by the brutal murder of one of their colleagues?

Anyway, sorry but John McDonnell is bad now.

My mum worked for 30 years on the biscuit counter at BHS. She will be spinning in her grave. I can’t believe that Rich Tea and Jammy Dodgers didn’t come top. Moral of this story: never trust opinion polls

it's rough when you get old and have vivid memories of things that most young ppl are completely incredulous about. I'm an old bastard and have never seen a fucking biscuit counter in my life - but know many ppl (including my partner) who have done stints at Foxes Biscuits and they might have done some biscuit counting :p

Alastair Campbell has alleged the Labour party was discriminatory when expelling him for voting for the Liberal Democrats, given the number of other members who have not faced similar action despite publicly admitting they voted for another party.

Campbell, Tony Blair’s former spin doctor, has lodged an appeal against the expulsion, which came within 48 hours of him saying he had voted for the Lib Dems in the European parliamentary elections last week.

“I am told by my friends in the Labour party that they have been inundated with people resigning,” Campbell told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Friday. “Are they too going to be expelled within 48 hours of saying so?”

He said his lawyer had advised him to include a point about discrimination in his formal appeal.

“Is Cherie Blair going to be expelled? Is Bob Ainsworth going to be expelled? Is Charles Clarke going to be expelled?” Campbell asked, listing other Labour members who had spoken of voting elsewhere in the European elections.

god let's fuckin hope so

Can't expel them fast enough.

Like just join the lib dems

I wish Labour’s soft Brexit punt had worked, and unified Leavers and Remainers so the left could focus on fixing our broken economy.

But it hasn’t. Brexit is polarised between No Deal/Remain, and now the compromise position is a second referendum. Corbyn should campaign for one. https://t.co/oEZikgM1Ta

— Ash Sarkar (@AyoCaesar) May 31, 2019

Sarkar and Owen Jones are jumping the gun on this.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 31 May 2019 08:29 (seven years ago)

And it's only going to get worse. From the tweets I have seen Brexit Party will win in Peterborough next week.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 31 May 2019 08:31 (seven years ago)

With Peterborough only a week ago, can see Sakar and Jones are jumping the gun - but then the question becomes "when would it not be jumping the gun?"

or, maybe, "is there no gun to jump?'

||||||||, Friday, 31 May 2019 08:39 (seven years ago)

can see the LDs jumping into bed with the tories again, tories then argue sacrificing no deal is the price of giving the country a stable government and now is the time to bring the country together in the national interest. going to be extremely edifying watching the whole swathe of sensible commentariat applaud this pivot to soft brexit as grown up statesmanlike leadership

||||||||, Friday, 31 May 2019 08:43 (seven years ago)

I mean, if they can post things like this now with a straight face...

My position is I voted remain but I lost. I would like a compromise deal to leave on the softest possible terms, preserving as much as we can of the value of membership while also leaving. There is no party remotely close to this view.

a promiscuous, flighty art student looking for love (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 31 May 2019 09:45 (seven years ago)

idiots like him have cynically muddied the waters on labour policy for the past three years. coupled with the hard remain wing of the party signal boosting this performative confusion at all turns - this has led to the collapse of the centre on brexit that matt DC was talking about above. worryingly, however, the aggro remainers’ leaning into the culture war has polarised the debate so much that any second ref looks increasingly likely that it will be fought between no deal and no brexit.

considering that (1) the underlying causes which led to the brexit vote in the first place have not been addressed and (2) there’s nothing in the past however many years that suggests the sensible establishment centre are well equipped to fight a culture war against the faragist right... well, may god have mercy on our souls.
