That's a good LRB blog link, thanks.

I like how it says "prominent racist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon" instead of pussyfooting around with "rightwing activist" or his fake name.

The Pingularity (ledge), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 09:55 (seven years ago)

I'm assuming you're not saying that it happens to every woman, so they should all have a thick skin, but if you're not saying that then I don't know what you're saying?

No, definitely not. It shouldn’t happen to any woman. I’m extremely dubious of whose stories seem to be worth telling, and unfortunately JP being subject to violent misogynistic abuse does not make her markedly different from many high profile female politicians in this regard. You might ask why someone who was first elected in 2015 and who has never held a front bench position and who is certainly fawned over by centrist journalists should be considered more deserving of this piece than, for example, the shadow Home Secretary.

gyac, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 10:05 (seven years ago)

Well, you too could have a story worth telling if you affect to be a plain speaker but spend all your time cultivating the posh end of the media. ISTG the publisher who bought her book is called Jocasta.

gyac, I get what you're saying, and I completely agree that we should hear much more about the abuse received by Diane Abbott (to the extent that she is comfortable with it), but "MP has rape jokes made about her by Gamergater and UKIP MEP candidate" is a fairly solid hook for a story.

(I also do have the impression that JP has gotten more than her fair share* of abuse, but then where am I getting that impression from and what's their angle)

Either way, that's the context which makes "let's troll JP off Twitter" at best a stupid thing to say.

*the actual fair share = 0

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 10:48 (seven years ago)

just came here to post the link to james butler's LRB blog, but i see it's here ahead of me

mark s, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 10:49 (seven years ago)

xp DA received over half the abuse received by all MPs, not sure what more she would need to do about it. Regardless, if I were a feminist I wouldn’t be so quick to brag about allegedly telling the most abused woman in Parliament to fuck off when I’d been elected like a week or something - people might wonder about your priorities.

gyac, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 10:53 (seven years ago)

Also going to point out that plenty of people, myself and comrade alphabetical obviously included, dislike JP for legitimate and well-founded reasons - it’s extremely bad faith on both of us to conflate, deliberately or otherwise, his joke about that with the vile rape and death threats she gets from fascists.

gyac, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 10:54 (seven years ago)

ok let's just agree to troll JP out of the Labour Party because she's a self-promoting enemy of socialism and the people

specific goats my way (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 10:56 (seven years ago)

Original joke was "like we did with the war criminal" anyway and I don't think Alistair Campbell was taken down by twitter sexists so I think it's more differing definitions of trolling that are causing the debate here.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:01 (seven years ago)

one of my local MPs Paula Sherriff needs bodyguards in Dewsbury because of death threats she's received. But she spends more of her time being a decent constituency MP rather than promoting her "brand" and gobshiting with idiot Corbynistas on twitter every day and talking about her fucking self all the time. All female MPs take lots of threats and abuse on social media, but she is the only one uniquely with a W Midlands accent still perhaps?

calzino, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:03 (seven years ago)

it's not even like pretending to be working class is original

specific goats my way (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:08 (seven years ago)

Andrew can you please take a nap for an hour.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:10 (seven years ago)

Ms Sherriff - whose constituency neighbours Batley and Spen, where Jo Cox was killed in 2016 - said she sometimes receives more than 1000 items of abuse per week.

if this is how much a low-key white female MP can get then imagine the industrial scale of work dealing with Abbott's office.. jesus.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:11 (seven years ago)

xp DA received over half the abuse received by all MPs, not sure what more she would need to do about it.

I don't really think the onus is on her, it's due to structural reasons - the bit where I said I agreed with you, I was agreeing with you.

I'm not conflating the two, I'm pointing out that the one forms the context for the other.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:13 (seven years ago)

What are the actual crimes of Jess Phillips? Not that I'm suggesting they'll justify the abuse, but I only ever hear about her on here, and it seems to be on the level on calzino's post up there.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:19 (seven years ago)

think i've already mentioned self-promoting enemy of socialism and the people

specific goats my way (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:20 (seven years ago)

My point is that she has spoken about it, repeatedly. Structure or not doesn’t have much to do with it.

I’m not sure where the thread should really go when you seem determined to place a stupid joke by xyzzzzzz_ on here as part of the same universe as targeted harassment and death threats organised by fascists? How exactly does his comment lead to those things?

gyac, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:23 (seven years ago)

she's a bad career politician and a supreme self-promoting narcissist and is on the blue labour wing. not much to like there for starters tbh!

she said that not long before the Jo Cox murder as well iirc, but wasn't pressed as hard as McD was about saying he wanted Tories to be scared to walk the streets.

sir, "both" is i am afraid a thin estimate

daenerys baker (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:37 (seven years ago)

I genuinely think we're agreeing loudly here, gyac - what I'm saying with "structural reasons" is what I thought you meant by "whose stories get told".

How exactly does his comment lead to those things?

Ah now I never said that - I don't think his joke is dangerous, just stupid and embarrassing.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:45 (seven years ago)

My local MP is probably quite similar to Jess on the political spectrum and is good friends with Liz Kendall and definitely not a Corbynite. But she seems to have found a way of getting on with the job without being a grandstanding twitter arsehole every day or undermining the leadership at every possible opportunity.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 11:45 (seven years ago)

Saddened to hear you don't like my joke Andrew. I will go back to the drawing board and reflect on where I have gone wrong. I will do better, promise.

Ties into yesterday's discussion about British emigrants:

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2019/may/29/john-cleese-criticised-for-saying-london-is-no-longer-an-english-city

“I find it hypocritical that someone who is actually living abroad feels the need to make a point like this,” she said. “Why do some British people not see themselves as immigrants if they’ve moved elsewhere? We see cases of British people referring to themselves as expats, detaching themselves from the term immigrant.”

Tbf Canadians and Americans do the same thing.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 13:10 (seven years ago)

i mean it's pretty simple, brits are entitled to go anywhere in the world and be warmly welcomed by the natives but traffic going the other way isn't allowed

a promiscuous, flighty art student looking for love (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 13:19 (seven years ago)

Expats are a benevolent force, striding the land in their pink trousers and with a pigeon’s head in their pocket to ward off the uppity natives. Immigrants are filthy hordes that leech and leech off a country. Duh!

gyac, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 13:25 (seven years ago)

i feel bad for fans of Legends of British Culture when they find out that their favourite Legend of British Culture is a wee bit conservative

specific goats my way (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 13:28 (seven years ago)

rich white brits are not filthy immigrants in the same sense that they hunt for game on their expensive hols, not bushmeat.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 13:31 (seven years ago)

Emigrants of the countries that are widely seen as desirable places for immigration, like the UK and the USA, get accustomed to questions that feel like accusations: "you left there to come here? why?" This sets up, in the minds of these emigrants, an envisaged dichotomy between immigrants & ex-pats; a dichotomy that one should resist! but a part of the lives of these immigrants, that feels like they oughtn't give up their identification as a person from the "desirable" countries. whereas identifying as an "immigrant" has a permanence to it that feels like closing off that past.

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 13:33 (seven years ago)

When you come from an uncouth country of lazy cheats and liars, you're generally expected to give up whatever worthless cultural bagage you may have amassed prior to ascending to civilization.
