Maybe they’ll tell the story of how her teeth got ~like that~

The migration into Western Europe from Eastern Europe or the Middle East is more about absolute poverty, while European migration to Australia is about better opportunities among those who wouldn't suffer overly if they had to stay in their native countries

Many of the people moving to the UK are highly-skilled or highly-qualified. It's seen as a 'brain drain' issue in Poland, for example, not just a labour shortage one. There are lots of reasons for people to leave but a fairly common one ime is a sense of frustration at limited opportunities for advancement. In a lot of sectors, you need excellent qualifications (often post-grad degrees) to get an entry-level job and there's a perception that opportunity is tied to age in a very linear way. The UK is seen as more meritocratic and more interested in talent vs experience.

What often ends up happening is people with good degrees in Hungary or Poland ending up serving coffee in London, but i'd expect that to change over time.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 14:15 (seven years ago)

did anyone ever explain to Jesse that many MP's throughout postwar history have had regional accents and come from w/c backgrounds or even had regional accents and come from middle class and upwards backgrounds ..and nobody really gives much of a fuck about this these days.

This seems to be true of Italy, from what I've heard from Italian colleagues, and Spain to some extent - limited opportunities that is, not sure the mechanisms are the same.

Apparently Jess Phillips's book had been optioned by TV production company. As a drama. I'm not making this up.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 14:43 (seven years ago)

First Caitlin Moran's shite sitcom, now a Jess Phillips biopic, West Midlands so much to answer for.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 14:43 (seven years ago)

I was just thinking it will probably be as "hilarious" as that one.

calzino, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 14:45 (seven years ago)

True story: after the Bridgewater Four were released there was a docudrama on the Beeb a few months later and i remember swelling with gratitude at the first time i'd heard west midlands accents on TV not used for "comic" effect

ogmor, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 15:10 (seven years ago)

got to admit I'll miss pacer trains when they are gone, or parked next to local community centre as it were.

Definitely true of Italy, with the economic and cultural regional split factored in, from what i've been told. Come to the UK from Sardinia and you're Italian. Come to Turin or Milan from Sardinia and you're Sardinian. I know people who'd like to move back, given the chance, but feel there's not much to do in the south and they'd be discriminated against in the north.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 15:47 (seven years ago)

What are comrade alphabet and the rest of us missing?

The drama will tell the story of a politician who “has been making the headlines ever since for doing what women are simply not supposed to do: speak up.”

Does this include the time she supposedly told Diane Abbott to fuck off?

gyac, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 15:56 (seven years ago)

I wouldn't consider telling Dianne Abbott to fuck off to necessarily be a great indicator of a level head, no - but I wouldn't consider it inviting an offer to give Jess Phillips a good fucking to sort out her teeth, either.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 16:29 (seven years ago)

It was bad form when they did that to Alastair Campbell too, let’s be honest. Nothing even wrong with his teeth

Lib Dem voters writing to the Guardian in the expectation that they will be expelled from the Labour Party? Struggling to see a downside to this tbh.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 17:34 (seven years ago)

I wouldn't consider telling Dianne Abbott to fuck off to necessarily be a great indicator of a level head, no - but I wouldn't consider it inviting an offer to give Jess Phillips a good fucking to sort out her teeth, either.

I’m lost and idg how the two are related. I’ve also got some bad news for you about outspoken female politicians, and especially those who are (for example) black or gay or disabled...

gyac, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 17:44 (seven years ago)

Andrew - "an offer to give Jess Phillips a good fucking to sort out her teeth, either" isn't my style of trolling.

Spartacus II

Bob Ainsworth, defence secretary under Gordon Brown, is also set to be expelled after admitting to voting Green last week.

He said: 'When you see a guy being expelled from the party for doing exactly the same as you've done, you stick your hands up and say: 'I am Spartacus'.'

Seriously though, I imagine everyone outide of his immediate family has forgotten this Bob Carolgees clone ever existed.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 20:19 (seven years ago)

The guy's not even been ennobled yet, that's how memorable his political career was.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 20:20 (seven years ago)

just need hoey to admit to voting BXP

||||||||, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 20:57 (seven years ago)

this is a good thread on the background to the auto exclusion process

Alistair Campbell did not get expelled for voting Lib Dem but for promoting another party (an austerity enabling party at that) & warning people not to vote Labour. We don’t tell people how to vote but our rules prevent support of candidates opposed to labour during an election 1
