Thinking of how different Perkins locations bring me back to different times.
Burnsville Parkway and 35W: getting toys from the wishing well, swarms of post-church churchgoers if we tried to go on a Sunday.
494 and France: hanging out with the first people I knew online (local-dial-up bulletin boards). Lots of goths. One large group ditched without paying and somehow left me there (maybe I’d gone to the bathroom?).
Riverside and 94: mid-20s, I had written/directed a two-actor play, and we would bring our friends there after the show, in good spirits. And Rocky Horror pre-gaming a decade before that.
And then people-watching at the Embers on Hennepin after First Avenue and whatever.
― ... (Eazy), Friday, 9 August 2019 15:15 (six years ago)
I got hired to hostess the Excelsior Boulevard Perkins and quit after the training day because they wanted me to walk in the door, already in uniform. Pay was minimum wage with no share of tips. Even my mom was like, ‘will they be punching you in before you get on the bus in that?

I know this is mostly to talk shit about our fair state, but each election I'm blown away by how well run our polling places are in Minneapolis, such enthusiastic and helpful volunteers. (Was also happy to see some millennials at the tables in addition to the core of cool nice old Longfellow hippies). Everyone was great, in and out in five minutes.

Minnesota has a Democratic governor. Minneapolis has a Democratic mayor. The Minneapolis City Council is 12-1 Democratic. The 1 is a Green. Voting alone does not fix this if elected officials remain deferential to the cops. https://t.co/K3a3WU2QSb— Jonathan "Boo and Vote" Cohn (@JonathanCohn) May 29, 2020

a little MN historical "liberalism"
Mayor Art Naftalin (a Humphrey protege) responded by expanding civil rights committees created by Humphrey, even as the state of Minn. received new Pentagon funds for more riot training for the National Guard. Was up until 4 am last few nights, we have a neighborhood watch group that we formed to track all these vehicles creeping or speeding (always one or the other) though our neighborhood.
My friend's neighbor had his fence soaked in gasoline, they found boards soaked in kerosene in the alley. People have been defending the Longfellow Market, the last unburned grocery store in the neighborhood,if that goes we have no place go buy food for people without cars.
I sound like a crazy person but these vehicles are driving around all night. I've seen them. Going to St Paul yesterday a black BMW SUV shot past us on 94, no plates
THE POLICE ARE NOT DOING SHIT TO PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORHOODS
I haven't seen any cruisers patrolling or responding to call
Maybe if they weren't engaged in military fashion shooting at peaceful protesters THEY COULD ACTUALLY DO THEIR FUCKING JOBS

these are beyond dispute at this point, you are one of numerous mpls friends who have seen this in their neighborhoods. I have seen mentioned the added detail of large bags in the backs of these cars, which in light of the police's statement that they have found caches of accelerants in residential neighborhoods...
― valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Monday, 1 June 2020 16:28 (six years ago)
I’ve been thinking about all the people I know in the area, including ilx people, a lot lately. Hope everyone continues to be safe, and if there’s anything we can do from outside the state, let us know.
I have some friends who considered joining some students driving up from Iowa to peacefully protest and help aid, but I think it was wise they joined local efforts instead. I think having out of state people showing up is more of a risk than anything right now?
