swipe keyboards are an improvement. i feel like i've lost a superpower when i have to use someone else's phone. though the autocorrect is still so bad. surely this is a good use-case for the kind of natural-language tech that powers Alexa etc? don't suggest words that make no sense?

actually interested in this wwdc keynote for once
― stet, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:00 (four years ago) link
I'm vaguely interested because it seems like a moment where something interesting *has* to happen?
although right now they're telling developers about how great their original streaming video content is going to be so we're not off to a good start

multiuser TvOS is good. Goodbye Horrid Henry, Goodbye Gardener's World
― stet, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:11 (four years ago) link
this is really starting at trundle pace for something that was meant to pack in a whole lot of shit
― stet, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:14 (four years ago) link
I get that these talks are widely viewed outside of the developer community but ranting on about first-party app features on existing hardware without mentioning new APIs they're using seems like a complete waste of developer time

I will never enable dark mode on anything and you can't make me

love how close to parody these presentations skew
― mh, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:34 (four years ago) link
why stet? I'm exactly the opposite I will never disable it.

oh sorry meant silby!

dark mode is essential it saves my eyes
ok, the email masking stuff is good but more of a cloud service offering. nice to have it built in
― mh, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link
I just don't care for it, seems silly
― don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Monday, 3 June 2019 17:44 (four years ago) link
I also have the system text size slider all the way to the left tho so apparently I don't care about my eyes in general
― don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Monday, 3 June 2019 17:45 (four years ago) link
imo the best not caring about eyes would be using dark mode 24/7, even outdoors
― mh, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:46 (four years ago) link
dark mode is good, it makes it like you are in a secret cave
― j., Monday, 3 June 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link
If I'm gonna be in a secret cave I want muted warm light and like a comic book

i don't like dark mode because it doesn't feel like an apple os. feels like windows or some shit like linux that i don't understand
― flappy bird, Monday, 3 June 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link
Yeah DM meshes all my open windows into a black mass which looks great but makes it a little hard to distinguish them visually

how much for the Mac Pro wheels? HOW MUCH FOR WHEELS?
― mh, Monday, 3 June 2019 18:47 (four years ago) link
curious to hear what the maxed out price is, i'm guessing 8999
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 3 June 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link
maxed out is going to be way north of that. the Xeon 28-core alone is $8k
― stet, Monday, 3 June 2019 19:00 (four years ago) link
$23,999.

“Apple said that when a device is offline and sleeping, it sends out a secure Bluetooth beacon that can be detected by other Apple devices nearby, even the ones owned by other people. This results in a network that works to find lost Apple devices through a secure, encrypted, and anonymous signal relay.”This is weird...widescale mainstream mesh

haven't done it for a few years but a friend and I would jokingly max out the top-end system on the website back when Mac Pros were a running thing with regular updates and, even without RAID you could hit $10k reliably

SwiftUI will be such an improvement to my average, daily quality of life that I almost broke down.
― Elvis Telecom, Monday, 3 June 2019 20:15 (four years ago) link
page updated: https://www.apple.com/mac-pro/
so the weird expansion thing (MPX) is basically a way to throw the power connection for the video card along with more connection points to the bus on to the motherboard in a straight line instead of dropping more wires through the case and the card they're sourcing from AMD is using their specialty chip-to-chip bus, which isn't an apple-specific thing necessarily
no idea wtf Afterburner is, because "programmable ASIC" is general enough to mean it could do lots of things depending on what kind of basic instructions it allows. looks like their first-party video editing will be using some sort of API to interact with it, and it'll be interesting to see if they open it up
― mh, Monday, 3 June 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link
xp I did shed some tears of sympathy for the iOS developers watching that. hope it makes life less bad, Elvis!

Can you explain SwiftUI in terms a dyed-in-the-wool Objective-C/IB-before-storyboards relic can understand?
― stet, Monday, 3 June 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link
from one screenshot it looks like declarative nested frames as code, ie the only way I can imagine actually ever learning to program a GUI
