fwiw sic, Bullitt is a policier with one "action" sequence that everyone recalls

Last (x) movies you saw (II) - Yates' camera is watching McQueen's body the whole time, his action or inertness or frustration is doing 80% of the job of telling the audience where the investigation is at

on-topic:

Has Keanu played a light-hearted or goofy (or even expressive) character in the last two decades? the Wicks are the only things I've seen since the first Matrix on VHS, but I get the impression that he's pretty much all stonefaced all the time. RIP Parenthood Keanu.

(presumably Bill & Ted 3 is going to play on this, with sad dad Keanu finding how to get his mojo back)

Interrupting this (rightful) John Wick lovefest to reiterate an important point that shouldn't be overlooked:

As true today as the day it was posted.

Fetchboy, Thursday, 16 May 2019 20:54 (seven years ago)

Destination Wedding, a two-hander with Winona Ryder (no other character gets even a single line of dialogue, IIRC), was surprisingly funny.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 16 May 2019 21:23 (seven years ago)

Destination Wedding was weird. I remember laughing really hard one time but otherwise it was about two very attractive, miserable people that seem to give up on life and decide to be together.

Yerac, Thursday, 16 May 2019 21:26 (seven years ago)

It was a weird one for sure, ultra minimalist romcom. Not that memorable tbh

Simon H., Thursday, 16 May 2019 21:38 (seven years ago)

Maybe him screaming during the sex scene was what I thought was funny. I can't remember.

Yerac, Thursday, 16 May 2019 22:19 (seven years ago)

Keanu making his rom-com return (as the villain)

Obsessed with Ali Wong and Randall Park in Always Be My Maybe and I’m gonna bet you will be too. Fall in love with it on May 31. pic.twitter.com/dbia4LbiPp

I am going to watch the shit out of that.

He must have a good netflix deal. He appears super briefly in a bunch of their movies now. Like SPF-18 (the one where the teens are housesitting for him and he appears right at the end).

Yerac, Thursday, 16 May 2019 22:29 (seven years ago)

Destination Wedding was bearable bc of the chemistry btw Keanu & Winona , but the script itself was pretty dire.

why does Netflix bother with MPAA ratings?

Simon H., Friday, 17 May 2019 00:28 (seven years ago)

Why does Netflix make three minute trailers?

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 17 May 2019 00:32 (seven years ago)

I'll also watch the shit out of that but I feel like I've seen the movie now (minus the ending where Wong and Park end up together).

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 17 May 2019 00:32 (seven years ago)

Part of them reviving the romcom is feeling the necessity to do it in the most rote, by the numbers fashion possible so everyone recognizes what they're doing (and they can crank em out as fast as possible)

Simon H., Friday, 17 May 2019 00:34 (seven years ago)

I will love Ali Wong forever because of her fancy asian/jungle asian joke.

Yerac, Friday, 17 May 2019 01:14 (seven years ago)

I was going to watch that anyway (cause I too love Ali Wong) but yep, looking forward to it even more now that I know Keanu's in it.

why does Netflix bother with MPAA ratings?

A lot of people seem unaware of this but aside from the KID profiles, Netflix also has parental controls. You can set shows above a certain rating to be accessible only with a PIN.

Roz, Friday, 17 May 2019 01:43 (seven years ago)

Lol. That Keanu scene in the preview was filmed in my place of work. They shot it late at night/early morning so I never saw him but the security guards said he was super friendly.

Fetchboy, Friday, 17 May 2019 03:19 (seven years ago)

MPAA ratings allow a movie to be shown in a big chain/“normal” theater which is important when ur trying to get nominated for AWARDZ

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 17 May 2019 03:22 (seven years ago)

This movie, like 98% of Netflix originals, will never be screened in a theater

Simon H., Friday, 17 May 2019 03:25 (seven years ago)

... except it says at the end of that trailer that it'll be screened on Netflix and in select theatres.

Roz, Friday, 17 May 2019 03:36 (seven years ago)

I still think it was a crazy leap to think anyone would be convinced Diane Keaton's character in Something's Gotta Give would choose J Nichols over Keanu. I totally forgot until now that they dated irl too.

Yerac, Friday, 17 May 2019 15:27 (seven years ago)

except it says at the end of that trailer that it'll be screened on Netflix and in select theatres.

OK, I missed that. But the idea that more than 5-6 of the many movies they produce annually will ever be submitted for serious awards consideration is wrong.

Simon H., Friday, 17 May 2019 15:29 (seven years ago)

99% of you wdnt get off the couch to see this in a theater if you could

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 17 May 2019 16:04 (seven years ago)

entirely defensible in this case

It's insane/pathetic that the Hallmark Channel is just letting Netflix drink their milkshake instead of, like, just casting some non-white actors from time to time.

I used to work somewhere (mid 2000s?) that had a lot of celebs regularly wandering around. Keanu was the only one where people dropped what they were doing and ran out trying to get a glimpse.

Oddly enough Vanessa Paradis was the only one that I ever saw that had photogs surrounding her.

Yerac, Friday, 17 May 2019 16:33 (seven years ago)

He filmed a particularly dumb movie on my college campus in the '90s, at just about peak Keanu, and so many people were jockeying for assistant/coffee type positions on the production to be around him.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 May 2019 16:38 (seven years ago)

Heard a story from a friend who canvassed/fundraised for Obama and ended up at Keanu's house, and apparently K invited him in and was extremely nice.

River's Edge is a dumb carton, but Keanu's looking for something human.

He's better in Permanent Record (not a better movie, though).

He was charming in a supporting role in Something's Gotta Give, and the movie is so chickenshit about EWWW GRANNIES HAVING SEX that Nancy Meyers couldn't conceive of a scenario where Diane Keaton and Keanu end up married fucking the shit out of each other.

You want to like that film so much, all the good people in it. It’s basically terrible tho isn’t it. Otm about reeves tho (I’m calling him reeves now)

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Sunday, 19 May 2019 12:03 (seven years ago)

god I love how he still can't grow a full beard so much

It looks like they fill it in for John Wick!

Keanu is awesome for keeping himself out of the spotlight so well. I don't know much about him or his private life, but he does seem to be massively generous. I remember hearing the stories of him gifting the Matrix FX team millions of dollars, among other things, and thinking: this is a good guy. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he got John Wick 1 made as a favor to his Matrix friends. Wasn't the director his stunt double?

Basically, Keanu seems like Tom Cruise if Tom Cruise were not a weirdo trying to lure people into Scientology. Unless Keanu is a total weirdo, too, but is keeping it quiet.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 May 2019 13:24 (seven years ago)

Buzzfeed did a really nice love letter to him here:

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he got John Wick 1 made as a favor to his Matrix friends.

That is pretty much the case.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 May 2019 16:05 (seven years ago)

xpost Thanks for that Yerac - I did think that the Wick movies were *about* Keanu as well as made for him, but wasn't sure how to put it into words as well as that piece did.

And I'm really loving all the sweet Keanu stories that have been coming out throughout this press tour.

Here’s one. Keanu bought the house and property that is now my son’s preschool and handed it all over to the kids...not because he himself had a kid that went there. He had no connection to it at all. He just heard they needed a place and so bought it for them. https://t.co/VcZ67M6pTK

A couple staying in my hotel got on my elevator beaming, and I found out it was because they had just met Keanu Reeves, who was out walking on Hollywood Boulevard. They complimented him on his work and he said thank you and shook both their hands & they had a nice conversation.

i saw keanu in the lobby of a staging of Robert Wilson's Tom Waits/WSB musical The Black Rider in SF about 16 years ago and the excitement among others who also saw him was palpable. He was just standing around by himself looking like a dude.

I haven't seen it but he apparently did 13 episodes of detective comedy Swedish Dicks, basically as a favour for Peter Stormare.

And it's divisive but I loved his deadpan, depressive Constantine. Plus goofy voice-over work as Keanu the cat, the upcoming Toy Story 4, etc.

Roz, Sunday, 19 May 2019 16:20 (seven years ago)

I love Constantine.

JW3 - easily the most violent movie I've ever seen, and the gunshots and explosions were so loud in my super-Dolby theater I felt like I should have worn earplugs.

i think this interview/profile was posted in a different Keanu thread - anyway it’s a few months old but its ~excellent~
