he quickly deleted it and said he didn't see the racist connotations because his mind "isn't diseased".

calzino, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 21:34 (seven years ago)

Yeah I’m interpreting it as him being gobsmackingly ignorant or blind towards racism rather than it being intended as a racist insult but even so it’s a fucking shocker of a tweet

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Wednesday, 8 May 2019 21:51 (seven years ago)

fired by fivelive

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 09:40 (seven years ago)

whoops

michael keaton IS jim thirlwell IN ‘foetaljuice’ (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 May 2019 09:46 (seven years ago)

it was an awful, awful, awful show and I will not miss it one iota.

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 09:57 (seven years ago)

Some good news at last.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 May 2019 09:57 (seven years ago)

Weird he decided to tweet this after the birth of this particular royal baby, makes u think

gyac, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:01 (seven years ago)

Will stick my head up here and say I really liked his show and that he tweeted the same photo at the last few royal births, dunno if you all want to flag me or tell me to fuck off or something?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:03 (seven years ago)

If that’s true then that’s a bit different but it’s still incredibly stupid!

gyac, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:09 (seven years ago)

yes i think his emerging line is "i don't really pay any attention to the royals, it's all just a distant circus to me" -- but "i fucked up bcz i wasn't even slightly paying attention" isn't much of a defence for a very highly paid media professional really

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:11 (seven years ago)

that's one of the dangers of being a real-life Colin Hunt with an army of admirers who never tell you to stfu!

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:17 (seven years ago)

His "deleting my tweet" was conciliatory and apologetic.

Compare it to his post sacking tweets, hmmmmmmm

Mark G, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:37 (seven years ago)

Charlton forum thread on this already has 142 comments. Dare I

imago, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:45 (seven years ago)

god that show made Five Live unlistenable on a Saturday morning, please replace with po-faced journos going on and on about sport. not joking.

call me cismale (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:03 (seven years ago)

man gazza really fell in with a bad crowd in the 90s

michael keaton IS jim thirlwell IN ‘foetaljuice’ (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:04 (seven years ago)

his general persona/personality has been even more unpleasant than usual for a long time. this sort of macho, ranting idiocy:

He later attacked the BBC for its handling of the decision, describing the call from 5 Live firing him as “a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity”.

He added on Twitter: “They took a tone that said I actually meant that ridiculous tweet and the BBC must uphold blah blah blah. Literally threw me under the bus. Could hear the suits knees knocking.”

obviously there were his (unintentionally) amusing tweets when england lost to iceland in the euros also - he comes across like a football alex jones.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:13 (seven years ago)

i don't know the business but maybe sometimes the suits are just looking for the first good excuse that comes along

call me cismale (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:18 (seven years ago)

don't mention the VAR

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:22 (seven years ago)

yeah i think if they weren't facing the pensioner license fee black hole in their funding in the coming years it might have been a different outcome. he's become another victim of austerity :p

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:23 (seven years ago)

they're scared! he's getting too close to the truth!

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:24 (seven years ago)

i meant because he's a boring pain in the arse tbh

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:30 (seven years ago)

Heh.

I quite like his radio show but there's a wilful ignorance involved on my part because, particularly on Twitter, he's been building to something like this for ages.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:30 (seven years ago)

if I was at all invested in affirming Danny Baker's racism I would probably compile all the times he claimed to have killed Bob Marley

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:34 (seven years ago)

yeah I remember that, joking about causing cancer in Bob Marley after a football tackle or something.. what a bizarre dickhead.

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:38 (seven years ago)

As an aside, I can’t stand the typo/misspelling that gives us GAFFS instead of GAFFES.

suzy, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:51 (seven years ago)

that gaff in full

Did he tho? His line seems to be "he would have", not "he did" amd no one seems to have dug out these alleged tweets.

Ned Trifle X, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:58 (seven years ago)

He definitely didn't for the three Will'n'Kate births.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Thursday, 9 May 2019 12:09 (seven years ago)

Charlton forum largely in accord with ILX here tbh, general line is that he wasn't being consciously racist but pretty thick. BBC decision generally regarded as a ridiculous kneejerk and I'd be inclined to agree on principle tbh - if there's no malicious intent, as seems pretty obvious, why sack him? Not that I'm shedding too many tears

imago, Thursday, 9 May 2019 12:11 (seven years ago)

what's the mumsnet consensus

michael keaton IS jim thirlwell IN ‘foetaljuice’ (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 May 2019 12:14 (seven years ago)

Here we go.
Opened door, grinning Mail hack.
"Do you think black people look like monkeys?"
Any other time you'd knock someone right on their arse for saying that.
No mate. Gag pic. Posh baby chimp. Alerted to circs. Appalled. Deleted. Apologised.
He asks again! #MailonRacism

— Danny Baker (@prodnose) May 9, 2019

ironic that people are now knocking on his door asking for his views on non-whites

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Thursday, 9 May 2019 12:16 (seven years ago)

xps can't find them, and quite likely imagined because loads of old people / chimps tea party etc. photos, it's one of his twitter things

Extremely unconvincing performance as a 'genuine member of the public' by the actress in that.

meanwhile everyone plz to buy my book abt how great the rock press was back when ppl writing for it included *checks notes* ugh never mind

(i guess i dodged a bullet back when he was too important to reply to my emails lol)

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:20 (seven years ago)

That was a v good joke Nick B, better than the "PG gone mad" I'm seeing everywhere.

James O'Brien interviewed DB, he does not sound like he's taking it very well - https://www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenters/james-obrien/danny-bakers-first-interview-since-being-sacked-by/

Also realised that his tweets seem to only go back to February for some reason?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:23 (seven years ago)

what's really getting me about this is the brazen hypocrisy of the bbc, who promote racists and far-right ideologues at any given opportunity

imago, Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:33 (seven years ago)

wow shes only just given birth

this was good too

michael keaton IS jim thirlwell IN ‘foetaljuice’ (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:34 (seven years ago)

i agree the BBC should not promote racists and far-right ideologues maybe they should sack Danny Baker
