You can still like the character guys. Appreciate some commentary about my main beef with her, which is her function as a not like the other girls type character.

sure they pretty clearly set Arya and Sansa up as opposites early on

― mourning joe (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 18:33 (five years ago) link
I didn't think it's tongue in cheek! I'm hoping that the point is that Jon and Dany are useless and Cersei did the right thing because otherwise it's especially boring.

Did Jorah ride out with the Dothraki or did he separate at that point. I didn't see how he came back if so. I was half expecting the Dothraki to return almost immediately having changed sides. Seemed a bit wasteful of them.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 20:07 (five years ago) link
he didn't ride out with them
― akm, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:01 (five years ago) link
i don't think?
man how dark was this show on everyone's TV? Jorah rode out with them and in fact started out leading the charge, but there was a specific shot in the charge that did show him being passed by many dothraki en route to the dead army.
― omar little, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:05 (five years ago) link
so he probably was lagging a bit behind by the time they were getting massacred up front
― omar little, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:06 (five years ago) link
i watched it during the daytimne and it was hard to filter daylightout, as a result, I could see maybe 25% of the screen.

weirdly the night parts were ok for me, it was the snowstorm shit with the dragons i was having a bit of trouble with
― omar little, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:07 (five years ago) link
That stuff was meant to be confusing
― We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:09 (five years ago) link
yeah i guess i just think there was another level of ugly visual clutter with the confusion in the way those parts were shot and the characters framed that made it a bit more difficult than it should have been. the parts w/the NK rocketing out of the clouds below and taking some shots at them, and later them plunging down into the clouds were vv beautiful though.
― omar little, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:13 (five years ago) link
off topic but i can't read NK without thinking NK Jemisin and it's driving me nuts
― these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:28 (five years ago) link
Yeah, Jorah rode out. There were then lots of riderless horses shown returning before one with Jorah on looking dejected. No-one said a word to him though, which was odd xps
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:31 (five years ago) link
xp so what you're saying Karl is that the white walkers were SJWs?
― rob, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link
no, but i can guarantee a horde of dead creatures led by NK Jemisin would have done a lot better in battle with than CGI face guy

The trenches were a good idea. Was idly thinking how you'd defend against an enemy like that and a series of concentric barriers that funnel them into kill zones is clearly the way to go.
one of the many "but why did THAT happen?" moments of the episode was wondering how they intended to set the trenches aflame. were they just counting on melisandre to cast Wall of Fire and roll a 20?

the dragons. but they couldn't see the signal.

ugh this shit drives me nuts: all of the goofy-looking elements of premodern war -- loud uniforms, big drums, trumpets and cymbals, huge flags that people would die to keep upright -- were to keep people organized and communicating. the whole thing hinged on a guy waving a torch? come on man

Next week the dragons attack King's Landing but are soundly defeated by seasonable fog.
― nashwan, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 22:16 (five years ago) link
One thing I havent seen anyone comment on here or on reddit/twitter is the idea that "aw everyone important survived dammit" isnt a cert. We didnt see how badly off people were after all the wights dropped dead, aside from I think Jon, Melisandre and Dany?
Is it not possible some people are mortally wounded and will end up dying next ep early on?
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 23:27 (five years ago) link
eh, I think that's unlikely.

next ep is a half dozen takes on the hospital bed scene from the end of ROTK, except all the hobbits are sad humans and the person in the bed dies

a late-discovered wound would be a cool storyline, but these writers are interested in cruelty to children, not to the fans

Trying to think of further uses for Bran now. Hope we see Bran observing moments in Cersei's past to try and gain an advantage. Maybe he will check out those elephants. Presumably he won't have any need to warg a dragon now.

Has the Martin timeline looked into the future of these kingdoms much or would that have been seen as too much spoiler?
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 09:32 (five years ago) link
Watched the with on Apple TV on a 10-year-old 32 inch telly, it all seemed fine. There were some dark & confusing bits but it seemed like they were clearly meant to be confusing "thick of the battle" type moments?
I mean, compared to the bright daylight mess of every Marvel movie conclusion, everything here seemed pretty legible and easy to follow.
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 11:56 (five years ago) link
The dragon stuff was extremely difficult to follow but that seemed more a direction problem than lighting.Completely baffled by some of the reactions to the battle on the ground though. It wasn’t that confusing (yes Jorah was in the charge?!?!) and to the extent it was it was pretty clearly a (legitimate, effective) stylistic choice.

Sam fending off wave after wave of zombies
maybe it was my viewing environment, but it seemed like every time they cut to him, another character was saving his ass, and he seemed just about to eat it the last time?

Jorah led the charge initially, then there was a specific shot of him being passed by faster dothraki riders, who then rode up to the lead. So he got points for bravery for leading, then got himself an escape hatch.

If you turn the brightness all the way up on the shot with Arya and Sansa observing the Dothraki charge from winterfell, you can see that Jorah is only rising at 95% speed
― these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:38 (five years ago) link
Unfortunate typo there but still an impressive rise %, all considering
― these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:39 (five years ago) link
btw there's a split second, marking the gear shift from 'we are charging' to 'we are dying', where you see the foremost Dothraki rider suddenly come up against the zombie giant, an 'ulp' moment where he is clearly looking up at something much larger than himself
― valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:51 (five years ago) link
can't believe no one has mentioned Insane Clown Posse and Juggalos and that Jorah wasn't in the front of the dothraki line the whole time in this thread
