don't really understand the apparent universal love for a film like Avengers: Endgame

Dan S, Sunday, 28 April 2019 21:55 (seven years ago)

not posting this as a comment about ilx discourse but I thought it was funny

so the major corporation that's eating the rest of the entertainment industry alive made $1.2 billion at the box office this weekend and you're celebrating it as a personal validation of your fandom. pic.twitter.com/P8cbhzxBrk

It's the same thing as ISIL, except when it's Daesh, or sometimes The New Caliphate.

Imagine being an adult with a strong opinion on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 03:07 (seven years ago)

You know what, I take that back, having now seen some images from it this movie looks like a hellish nightmare about which I now have opinions

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 05:59 (seven years ago)

i'm not even sure kids are the target audience for a sonic the hedgehog movie, maybe they would have been in 1994 but we live in a very weird world now

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 06:05 (seven years ago)

All superhero movies

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 06:24 (seven years ago)

That belongs to a "things I need to stop getting irrationally angry about" thread for me. But I don't want to hear about box office receipts or what ppl who should be reporting real news think about this abject dross, it feels like getting locked in a leaky portaloo with Kermode type torture when you get exposed to it in places that should be safe spaces.

calzino, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 06:39 (seven years ago)

yep

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 08:41 (seven years ago)

the whole thing around the Marvel series (in particular, but really any huge franchise) of too much caring and too much coverage makes me not want to care

- pre movie hype starting with end credits of last movie
- pre movie hot takes on how this is the death of cinema, again
- millions of online spoilers on day 1
- box office smash numbers
- hot takes on how the box office smash numbers are actually the worst thing and the death of cinema
- even hotter takes on how the movie and the box office says x about diversity/the patriarchy/the military industrial complex/21st century fascism/how adults are really children it wasn't like that when we watched Gary Cooper and John Wayne

Also while I'm here if everyone could shut the fuck up about Game of Thrones that would be great.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 10:42 (seven years ago)

Game of Thrones almost not worth mentioning itt by now.

I just don't care about superhero movies either, but Calz otm: I've had to listen to 5 separate news reports in 24 hours about this dreck, on what is supposed to be serious news radio.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 10:55 (seven years ago)

I have been waiting at least a decade, perhaps two for this cultural moment to be over, but afaict this is it now, superhero movies forever, something I will never have the slightest interest in.

Just to be perhaps trenchant here, I still love pop music, feel some of it has more ideas than almost any rock music, and also love "difficult" music of various sorts, things I need to put in work to appreciate, and these work surprisingly well together. BUT with other art forms, films especially, it seems like "difficult" has been pushed to the margins over the last couple of decades, I cannot seem to find that crossover which I still can in music.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 11:59 (seven years ago)

I think the major difference is w/ music or whatever there is no bottleneck on the consumer end

these fucking stupid movies on any given night (btw standard, 3D, Real3D, ACTUAL 3D or whatever he fuck) are taking up 40-50% of the screens

d'ILM for Murder (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 12:36 (seven years ago)

in yr avg multiplex obv^

d'ILM for Murder (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 12:41 (seven years ago)

yeah that's the problem, I think the combo of Game of Thrones + Avengers stuff clogging the internet on Monday was instructive, because as little as I care about GOT, it's just a TV show, not taking up extra space. the superhero movies are w/e but they happen ALL FUCKING YEAR now

flappy bird, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 17:44 (seven years ago)

we could wait for people (all over the world, it seems) between 25 and 45 to grow the fuck up, but that's clearly a fool's errand

otoh i also don't care who the frontrunner is 18 months before the goddamn election

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 17:52 (seven years ago)

even worse, increasingly you hear any criticism of the superhero movies - whether it's the movies itself, their popularity, the space they take up - shot down with variations on "stop raining on peoples' parade / don't criticize something everyone clearly enjoys"
fuck
off!

flappy bird, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 17:55 (seven years ago)

I just found out that all the people talking about Thanos are not talking about Elizabeth Holmes' scam company.

Today it's a toss up between the football and Eurovision for the thing I don't care about the most.

koogs, Saturday, 18 May 2019 19:25 (seven years ago)

I'm an occasional season ticket holder at my local football club and totally feel the same tbh

Fuckwits on Everest

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Sunday, 2 June 2019 22:40 (seven years ago)

On mountains anywhere tbh. Or buildings or whatever.

The Guts of Duran Duran (Tom D.), Sunday, 2 June 2019 22:41 (seven years ago)

what gets me is the ppl whose actual goal isn't just to climb everest, but to do it without bringing extra oxygen along! i mean i get just wanting to climb the mountain i guess but deliberately doing it in a way designed to maximize your own chances of DYING there feels like some seriously toxic brand of recklessness

kinda surprised that there haven't been any obsessed deep sea divers who tried to swim all the way to the bottom of the mariana trench yet

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 2 June 2019 23:12 (seven years ago)

It kills me how documentaries about climbing attempts play up the supposed drama of whether they'll make it to the top or else freeze to death trying. Except there is NO DRAMA in that. The narrative conflict is phony, because they always have the option to just NOT CLIMB the thing with no consequence.

This is a perfect case for not caring.

punning display, Monday, 3 June 2019 00:46 (seven years ago)

Oh good, I was wondering if anyone cared about this everest "drama" going on. This is only another version of people accidentally killing themselves while taking a selfie.

Yerac, Monday, 3 June 2019 01:26 (seven years ago)

I saw a photo of the queue of climbers for summiting and there must have been 80 people in a long line, within the last quarter mile of the top. It's a fucking circus, except it is happening in a place called the Death Zone.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 3 June 2019 03:10 (seven years ago)

a long line of ppl waiting to have their photo taken in a place where there is not enough oxygen to survive has to be some kind of metaphor for the state of humanity in 2019

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 3 June 2019 04:15 (seven years ago)
