But I don't want to hear about box office receipts or what ppl who should be reporting real news think about this abject dross, it feels like getting locked in a leaky portaloo with Kermode type torture when you get exposed to it in places that should be safe spaces.

the whole thing around the Marvel series (in particular, but really any huge franchise) of too much caring and too much coverage makes me not want to care

- pre movie hot takes on how this is the death of cinema, again
- millions of online spoilers on day 1
- box office smash numbers
- hot takes on how the box office smash numbers are actually the worst thing and the death of cinema
- even hotter takes on how the movie and the box office says x about diversity/the patriarchy/the military industrial complex/21st century fascism/how adults are really children it wasn't like that when we watched Gary Cooper and John Wayne

Also while I'm here if everyone could shut the fuck up about Game of Thrones that would be great.

I just don't care about superhero movies either, but Calz otm: I've had to listen to 5 separate news reports in 24 hours about this dreck, on what is supposed to be serious news radio.

I have been waiting at least a decade, perhaps two for this cultural moment to be over, but afaict this is it now, superhero movies forever, something I will never have the slightest interest in.

Just to be perhaps trenchant here, I still love pop music, feel some of it has more ideas than almost any rock music, and also love "difficult" music of various sorts, things I need to put in work to appreciate, and these work surprisingly well together. BUT with other art forms, films especially, it seems like "difficult" has been pushed to the margins over the last couple of decades, I cannot seem to find that crossover which I still can in music.

I think the major difference is w/ music or whatever there is no bottleneck on the consumer end

these fucking stupid movies on any given night (btw standard, 3D, Real3D, ACTUAL 3D or whatever he fuck) are taking up 40-50% of the screens

yeah that's the problem, I think the combo of Game of Thrones + Avengers stuff clogging the internet on Monday was instructive, because as little as I care about GOT, it's just a TV show, not taking up extra space. the superhero movies are w/e but they happen ALL FUCKING YEAR now

we could wait for people (all over the world, it seems) between 25 and 45 to grow the fuck up, but that's clearly a fool's errand

otoh i also don't care who the frontrunner is 18 months before the goddamn election

even worse, increasingly you hear any criticism of the superhero movies - whether it's the movies itself, their popularity, the space they take up - shot down with variations on "stop raining on peoples' parade / don't criticize something everyone clearly enjoys"

what gets me is the ppl whose actual goal isn't just to climb everest, but to do it without bringing extra oxygen along! i mean i get just wanting to climb the mountain i guess but deliberately doing it in a way designed to maximize your own chances of DYING there feels like some seriously toxic brand of recklessness

It kills me how documentaries about climbing attempts play up the supposed drama of whether they'll make it to the top or else freeze to death trying. Except there is NO DRAMA in that. The narrative conflict is phony, because they always have the option to just NOT CLIMB the thing with no consequence.

This is a perfect case for not caring.

I saw a photo of the queue of climbers for summiting and there must have been 80 people in a long line, within the last quarter mile of the top. It's a fucking circus, except it is happening in a place called the Death Zone.
