fwiw he was also going to bat for gary glitter in some tweets and defended a paedophile teacher

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 12:39 (seven years ago)

Fair enough, apparently racist tweets as well. He's quit, BBC says.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 12:51 (seven years ago)

It is legit astonishing that, having quit a party supposedly because the Labour leadership couldn't adequately police the social media output of a party with half a million members (plus however many other random cocks), the CDUK party can't even adequately vet the social media profiles of, what, 50 people?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 13:11 (seven years ago)

@SPACEHOG Are you guys doing anything in May? We've had a few dropouts.

calzino, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 13:12 (seven years ago)

they apparently paid “A LOT” of money to a third party to do that vetting for them... the PFI group can’t even outsource properly

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 13:12 (seven years ago)

xp Molly Half Head might be an appropriate candidate.

Tim, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 13:31 (seven years ago)

I mean, does an academic researching the work of a person constitute an endorsement of all that person's views? Not sure what kind of society we would have if we dismissed all academics, of all people, on the basis of each and every opinion, belief system, whim or manifesto of the people they choose to study.

As you say he's running for office. Your communication skills have got to be really sharp to back yourself so nothing nasty sticks. Most ppl really don't have that.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 13:42 (seven years ago)

If it was only the academic stuff i'd agree with Fernando but the guy seems to be *really* interested in challenging outmoded social taboos iykwim

After Cease to Brexist (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 14:49 (seven years ago)

70's libertarianism sent some PIEpl into some fucked up places! Harriet Harman was a notable member of a pro-paedo group iirc.

calzino, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:02 (seven years ago)

Yeah I really only defended him on the basis of what he might have studied as an academic. I think of my lecturers and I reckon each one of them or their work or a one-off talk they've given could be ridiculed/shamed outside the world of academia fairly easily. I've come to think of academia as sort of ideological kite flying more and more, though I do feel that can lead to sort of wooly or lackadaisical attitudes towards the actual morality of given thoughts and opinions, plus ignorance and naivety about the world outside the university.

The actual tweets are hard to defend. I guess in a small way it's a bit creepy this sort of hunt through people's tweets, and even the idea of Twitter as archive of morals, but equally I know the tweets that would end my candidacy would not include something like his 'black women scare me'.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:21 (seven years ago)

I'm not running for CHUK tho, just to clarify.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:23 (seven years ago)

We should have a thread for “which posts would end ur candidacy” imo

milkshake chuk (wins), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:23 (seven years ago)

Tho thinking about it that might be a bit close to home for at least one poster

milkshake chuk (wins), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:24 (seven years ago)

I would like to point out my candidacy is ended on this thread

imago, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:25 (seven years ago)

Harriet Harman was a notable member of a pro-paedo group iirc.

Er, no, she was a member of the NCCL which PIE was affiliated too, i.e. PIE sent them a cheque which they cashed. This was a typical PIE tactic, they tried to affiliate with a variety of gay rights organisations, march at Pride, etc.

Ned Trifle X, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:30 (seven years ago)

I'm sure there is a bit more to it than member of group that was honest victim of paedo infiltration, just from from memory, but fuck going down that wormhole again for today!

calzino, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:35 (seven years ago)

at this rate they’ll have no candidates left come 23 may

Oh yeah, there was! The NCCL definitely should have been more wary but because some of their aims overlapped (reducing the age of consent for gay sex for instance - although, er, they had different ideas about what that age should be) and because some people back in the 70s were TOTALLY mad and thought any group of "outsiders" should be protected it's not a surptise PIE tried tried to use that to their advantage. I remember seeing PIE materials in alternative bookshops in the early 80s even. Totally insane to us now obviously.

Of course why they cared what the NCCL thought when they had senior civil servants in the ranks protected by Thatch fuck knows.

Any of these guys that are ignoring their advisers instruction to have tweets on auto-delete should be banished to playing with the reserves yes I know CHUK is already the reserves

anvil, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:01 (seven years ago)

CHUK aren't the Under 2's reserves, were strictly talking the foetus league reserves here.

calzino, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:15 (seven years ago)

i have an acquaintance who upon getting a spin doctor position with the snp was given a day off before starting to comb through all of his online activity and delete anything offending. the fact that actual elected officials so often fail to do so (including in that party) boggles the mind

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:23 (seven years ago)

About 7/8 years ago I got a job in media and my then boss, on my first day, was like "what's your Twitter handle?" - at the time Twitter was used a lot less and I (stupidly) tended to take a more lax attitude to it as far as posting on nights out etc went, versus Facebook which felt like family and stuff and a bit more safe. I had to deliberately give him the wrong handle, delete a load of tweets, and then say I only used it sporadically.

Though as it turned out he wouldn't have cared anyway, but I didn't know him v well at that point.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:47 (seven years ago)

I've got to give the CHUKers some credit, their candidate selection process is adding greatly to the gaiety of the nation.

Freddie Starr (Hitler in shorts) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 17:27 (seven years ago)

if any us wanted to be MEPs... is it technically possible to delete all of an ILX user’s posts easily?

Jared O'Mara might be on the Labour frontbench by now if he'd been able to get Drowned In Sound to delete all his posts

Feel like the FAQ should mention that ILX may ruin your future opportunities to become a mild-breaking politician

mold-breaking, once again spellcheck singles me out as not CUK material

After Cease to Brexist (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:11 (seven years ago)

I once posted a very offensive tweet (not with my current account but one .. lol using my real name) to the Military Wives Choir account when they had a christmas single out. I wouldn't do that kind of thing now and was an angry young (late 30's) man at the time and pissed up. GCHQ would have me arrested + on the front cover of the Mail for the same offence these days!

calzino, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 18:31 (seven years ago)

I told them I certainly hoped they did get some boxes for christmas after hearing that awful bullshit single of theirs, not really good - but how I rolled at the time.

calz so shook by this memory that he ended a post with a full stop

blokes you can't rust (sic), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 19:21 (seven years ago)
