The good news is that George Galloway and Labour are still never ever getting back together.

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 22:15 (seven years ago)

Is there any way to stop Brexit without a 2nd referendum? I think not, and on those pragmatic grounds, I'm in favour of a 2nd ref because Brexit is a fucking awful idea.

But referendums are largely shitty and inconsistent with parliamentary democracy and a change of this magnitude shouldn't be dependent on an uneven, borderline majority at a single point in time. Other countries do things differently - in Australia referendums need a double majority to win, ie an overall majority and a majority in each jurisdiction (states + territories). If that had applied in the UK, Brexit wouldn't have won as it didn't get a majority in Scotland or N. Ireland.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 18 April 2019 00:25 (seven years ago)

UK is a unitary state, aus is federal

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 18 April 2019 00:37 (seven years ago)

The constituent parts of the UK have differing laws, their own legislative assemblies etc so I don't think the situation is that different.

yeah those aren’t runes. you could say the same thing about the anarchy symbol or the CND thing. that ‘x’ is an hourglass.

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Thursday, 18 April 2019 08:15 (seven years ago)

If you think skulls are cool, this is the campaign for you.

If you think skulls are terrifying, this is also the campaign for you.

The dissonance is what will power our vision of the future

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 April 2019 08:21 (seven years ago)

Yeah, not runes but the skull plus stark geometric symbol = easy first impression

the fascists have all the good symbols, the runes, the norse stuff. we're left with the shitty rainbow unicorns.

i was just down at Oxford Circus. kind of sleepy, post-rave vibe. 90% crusty. someone reading poetry from the boat. some reporters milling about. great weather. the police standing back quite placidly, seemingly content to just let this go on. personally can't quite shake the children of men feeling - i.e. comin through, gotta get to work

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 18 April 2019 08:57 (seven years ago)

that'll teach em

dog-whistle paranoia has led us to a golden age of optics concern w/ ppl tutting 'nagl tbh' at things they don't have a problem w/ per se but that vaguely remind them of something associated w/ someone they actually object to

If a boat is needed at Oxford Circus, Tracer, those sea level rises they're warning about are happening faster than I thought.

"The party are committed to improving our diversity in public office to closer mirror image society," the email read. "To help achieve this representation in our MEPs the Party agreed to take positive action in this ballot. The information was published with the application forms so all the applicants were aware of the diversity adjustments before they applied."

However, sources told BuzzFeed News that the Lib Dems scrapped diversity criteria across the country, following complaints and threats of legal action from white male members.

loool at adam boulton getting all pissy about the climate change protesters. streets around it are pleasant and free for walking, the atmosphere is pleasant with people either mildly curious or actively supportive. police milling around.

it is appropriate specifically since westminster pulled the rug out from under the pedestrianisation of oxford street at the last minute. as well as drawing attention to the need for global action this exemplifies the desirability of local environmental action and improvements.

lol, annoying that my bus into town has been cancelled all week as a result of this. had to get a cab on monday as a result and was sort of depressing to see all the buses abandoning their routes at aldwych.

fuck, that's not ideal is it. still, think of all the new energy that would be generated by Adam Boulton going thermonuclear with pissy fragile rage. it would be worth it.

This is an absolutely massive wake up call. If Farage wins the Euro elections & Labour doesn’t come top, it’s our equivalent of the Notre Dame fire - except it will take longer than 5 years to rebuild the tower. Maybe never https://t.co/nqfmxwEK7e

Malik said he knew Javid’s late father because he used his butcher’s shops. “He was a very good uncle of ours but Sajid has never been involved in the community at all. I find what he says quite offensive.”

Afzal Shah, a Labour councillor, said Stapleton Road was one of Bristol’s most vibrant places. “We talk about 91 languages being spoken in Bristol. You can hear most of them here. There is great energy and great potential.”

Shah went to the same school as Javid and also knows members of his family. “When I went [shortly after the home secretary] there were no drug dealers hanging around the school gates.”

Javid's "moving" origin story isn't standing up to much scrutiny from ppl that still live in his old area. quelle surprise.

i think that might be the last "A Bronx Tale" type sTorytelling from leadership candidates or is Jeremy Hunt going to start talking about his dark days of tippex sniffing and how a suburban hedge-hopping gang nearly led him onto the wrong path.
