If Labour went into an election promising to implement a Brexit deal that includes a customs union, its share of the vote would drop to 20%.

if you believe those numbers are an accurate

This is transparently fucking ridiculous

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 17:07 (seven years ago)

Altho "promising" and the nature of a promise are pretty meaningless there

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 17:08 (seven years ago)

well YouGov was co-founded by a current tory government minister, and is often dodgier than the other pollsters in recent history. But fuck them all until there is an election.

Didn't YouGov get it right last time? Having said that unless something major and unprecedented happens with the CUKs or LibDems then it's basically nonsense.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 17:23 (seven years ago)

if you believe those numbers are an accurate indication of what would actually happen in an election, then this seems like a argument in favour of a second referendum?

I mean every single variant of Brexit is unpopular enough to be rejected by the public and Parliament but there's probably a process of elimination that needs to happen first.

Ugh, third time trying to post this, it’s like the POST errors are trying to tell me to stop.

If anyone doesn’t get that at least part of Corbyn’s continual stressing that Labour will respect the result of the referendum was to offset the inevitable betrayal narrative, well, they don’t want to get it. Much easier to talk shit about Seumas Milne while Labour MPs are getting death threats and one of them has already been murdered.

gyac, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:35 (seven years ago)

much more of this and Labour suddenly pivoting to hard Remain might be an interesting move tbh

imago, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:39 (seven years ago)

as Matt said, name it stop + fuck these cunts. it really can be played i think. a sort of magnificent heel turn

uh make it stop, I mean

imago, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:44 (seven years ago)

A bit of levity: the protestors left Corbyn’s house:

Via @pa: When asked why they left, Tracee Williams, 55, said: “I don’t think this was a misstep but whether we’d do it again, I’m not so sure.

“We just really felt we had to bring it to his front door. I feel absolutely terrible about upsetting his wife.”

that’s quite sweet

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:45 (seven years ago)

windmill jolyon... remain are polling on 25%

In a referendum on Leave/Remain we'll count the votes for Leave and the votes for Remain. The European Parliamentary elections are a proxy Leave/Remain referendum. If you want to Remain make sure you vote for an unambiguously Remain party.

— Jo Maugham QC (@JolyonMaugham) April 17, 2019

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:47 (seven years ago)

this seemed like a more sensible analysis
https://mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2019/04/why-european-elections-will-be-painful.html?m=1

Given Labour's position and the lack of cooperation among the anti-Brexit parties, Remainers should not turn these European elections into a vote about being anti-Brexit, because they will lose badly. The combined vote for UKIP, the new Brexit party and the Conservatives is almost certain to exceed the combined vote for the LibDems, CHUK and the Greens. A smarter tactic would be, through the People’s Vote campaign, to make these elections into a vote about a People’s vote. The key difference of course is that Labour can potentially be counted as being in favour of a People’s Vote, and so making the European elections as a kind of referendum on a People’s Vote might succeed. Using the poll numbers above, the pro-People’s Vote parties have an overall majority.

... and the crowd said DESELECT THEM (||||||||), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:49 (seven years ago)

It does but ofc none of these cunts will do that because waaaah Mr Seumas Milne

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 22:15 (seven years ago)

Is there any way to stop Brexit without a 2nd referendum? I think not, and on those pragmatic grounds, I'm in favour of a 2nd ref because Brexit is a fucking awful idea.

But referendums are largely shitty and inconsistent with parliamentary democracy and a change of this magnitude shouldn't be dependent on an uneven, borderline majority at a single point in time. Other countries do things differently - in Australia referendums need a double majority to win, ie an overall majority and a majority in each jurisdiction (states + territories). If that had applied in the UK, Brexit wouldn't have won as it didn't get a majority in Scotland or N. Ireland.

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 18 April 2019 00:37 (seven years ago)

The constituent parts of the UK have differing laws, their own legislative assemblies etc so I don't think the situation is that different.

yeah those aren’t runes. you could say the same thing about the anarchy symbol or the CND thing. that ‘x’ is an hourglass.
